Say I need to reinstall XP Home and I've lost my disk. I don't want to shell out for a whole new copy. Can I get the (cheaper) upgrade and essentially upgrade from Home to Home?

As long as you have the registration (ID) number that comes with the original package you can contact MS and they will send a replacement system disc. They will have you fill out a form, including the registration number, to prove that you were the owner of the original package, and then you fax it back. They will ship the disc.

Costs vary according to the software package, but it is definitely cheaper than shelling out for a whole new copy.

it should be under $90 for a fresh copy on newegg, they usually make you buy an item of "hardware" to satisfy microsoft's policies. just buy a bag of screws for a buck or something, it can be as cheap an item as you want.

Heh, I just bought XP Home OEM from newegg. You don't even have to buy screws. When you put the XP in your cart, their system automatically adds a sham entry for a power cable splitter. (They do actually send it to you, but it doesn't cost you anything. It costs something like $4.99, with a $4.99 instant rebate.)

It sucks to have to pay $90 for an XP home license, when you can buy a whole XP Home-equipped computer from Dell for around $300 if you wait for the good deals. Dell sure as hell isn't paying $90 for the license.

"OEM" software is intended for sale to system builders. It's the same software as the retail version, but it comes without any of the packaging, printed manuals, etc. that you would get if you bought it at Office Depot or someplace like that, and it costs less.

The idea is that you're buying the OEM software to be installed on a system you're building; hence, the "must be purchased with hardware" requirement.

I think the licenses that the OEM versions are sold with are generally only good for that one system. So while you can apparently transfer your retail version of XP from one computer to another to your heart's content, you may not be able to do that with the OEM version (I spent some time trying to figure that out on the MS website recently, but couldn't find a definitive answer).

I would assume MS knows it's going on, their OEM software has always had to be sold this way (requiring hardware with purchase).


I work as a comp tech and we do the same thing as newegg all the time. Have people coming in wanting to go from ME/2000 to XP. Most have enough CPU/RAM to accommodate it so we charge a little less for Win XP Home and then charge them for an IDE cable and screws... If we have to add RAM, well then that's hardware .

BTW: German leading Computer Magazine c´t released a way with changing only 2 Bytes in the registry any Windows XP Home edition will become a full Windows XP Professional with full Remote Desktop Support, Encryption and all other features differentiate the two version.
