AI Upscaling holds huge promise, but most products I've seen upscale digitally shot product into 4k or 8k resolution. With vintage porn, the source is usually low-quality VHS tapes, but I have seen some impressive restorations. Can anybody recommend good software for cleaning up our VHS treasures (complete with the tracking lines dancing across the bottom of the frame!). Getting them up to 4k is obviously too big of an ask, but I was wondering if anybody has had success sharpening and enhancing them into something presentable. Thanks in advance!

OP Update: I've been playing with Topaz and agree this is probably the best product on the market for restoring/upscaling old VHS. So one setting appears to work with every video, it's sort of trial and error.

I'm guessing the only way to "fix" the tracking lines would be to crop the frame a little smaller. In any case I think the go-to software for easy DIY upscaling is Topaz Video AI. Some people cobble together a complex workflow using various command line tools but Topaz AI is easy peasy and gives really good results. As you say though, garbage in / garbage out. If the source material isn't great you can't expect miracles. But for well lit / well shot / well authored DVD from the early 2000's I've seen pretty stunning results. That material as the advantage that a lot of it was damn good quality to start with for SD video.

I've seen some very impressive vintage porn upscaled too, however my guess is that they've been upscaled from the original film (remember 70s to mid-80s would have been shot in film, whereas mid-80s and 90s probably VHS). Difference is the film is much higher resolution and so upscaling or polishing to 4K will yield excellent results whereas VHS is less than 500 lines of resolution and stored magnetically on tape so not perfect so it has much more to do. AI is kind of filling in the gaps in an intelligent way, but it can only guess so much.

Have to say though, I've tried Topaz Video Enhancer and it is very good indeed, would buy it myself but the 299$ price tag is a bit out of budget.

You can do a 4K scan from film, why would you upscale it? That makes no sense.

Not just about increasing resolution, processes also include increasing framerate from 24fps to 60fps for example. Framerate does improve overall feel, also there are algorithms in Topaz to apply HDR, again all helps with the end result. Finally. film will have grain, the AI can remove this too.
