I've seen a flick that I'd like to buy from the US. Problem is, it's very old and is only available on video.

I'm based in the UK, and seem to remember reading somewhere that American videos won't work in English video players. Can anyone confirm or suggest otherwise? Thanks.

You need a NTSC-compatible VCR. It usually is advertised on the frontpiece of the player, where you insert the tapes. Check for one that reads Pal/Secam/NTSC. Most current TVs are can decrypt NTSC signals. Actually, this is in the cards for me too, I've seen one DVD/VCR player/recorder combo at 450$, really tempting but there's no indication the DVD recorder can carry DVD-RW, which is pretty silly if it's the case.

Thanks for the reply vt.

I've just dug my VCR instructions out and it says that the Sharp VCR that I have is "VHS PAL standard" (Video signal system: PAL colour or monochrome signal: 625 lines).

Does this mean that my VCR definitely won't play NTSC-tapes?

(It also says on the front of the VCR "PAL EP Recording and Playback")

Your VCR is Pal only, so you won't be able to play the tape. Actually, you will, but the lower half of your screen is gonna be black. Or you'll end up with a b&w movie, depending on your TV.

Not necessarily. If your VCR was produced within the last ten years chances are very high that it is able to convert NTSC to PAL60. Without going into technical detail, this means, you can watch your NTSC-tape as if it were a PAL-tape but you cannot copy it.
