The artist originally installed the statue in the middle of the night and right in front of the stock exchange. It was an instant hit, but the city authorities impounded it. The public reacted, and the city finally agreed to place it in Bowling Green plaza. I think part of the statue's appeal is that the viewer can see whatever he or she is disposed to see. The Wall Street types see a powerful animal, a symbol of capitalism's vigor. Critiques of capitalism see an animal that is completely out of control, and a symbol of a system that won't be satisfied until it destroys the planet. In this picture, we see a tamed beast, that seems to protect a beautiful naked woman. To me, it is vaguely reminiscent of the Bull in Guernica. In early sketches, the Bull was more overtly a symbol of Fascism, and the horse a symbol of the Republic which the bull was trampling. As Picasso worked on it, the Bull was given more humanity, though it remains the only face in the scene that isn't terrified by what is happening. Ironically, it also stands over a naked woman.
