Of course, I'm just looking at things from the outside. We've recently had a few people who work or work at adult shops join, and I'd love to hear how their experience compares with this report.

THE REAL VIDEO SALES/RENTAL LISTS I spoke to the person today who'll supply me the numbers and we'll see how these numbers significantly differ from AVN's numbers (A Fat Dog movie in the top 40? Gimme a break.). But he gave me some real interesting tidbits before I begin posting. According to him ... --- His stores couldn't even keep Digital Sins' My Plaything: Jenna Jameson on the shelves. It was one of the highest priced, wholesale DVD's and they sold 1,000 units right off the bat. (http://www.newsensations.com). He said he can't even imagine how many units actually sold throughout the United States because this series is a monster, even though the series starring Miko Lee lowered the numbers. --- The top new release sales/rentals are always dominated by Hustler, Evil Angel and Anabolic/Diabolic. After these three companies, there is a significant drop off in the sales from other companies. As expected, Hustler's Barely Legal series generally outsells most new releases. Teen lines are huge particularly when marketed properly and customer satisfaction is retained. However, quality companies have a huge customer backing. --- In terms of general sales, Leisure Time Entertainment outsells every other company. I suppose those cheap compilation videos keeps this company strong. My guess is that they are the biggest company in the industry, bigger than Vivid in terms of sheer profitability. However, I'm not into supposed "Barnyard Videos" and prosthetic Cum Dicks shooting pre-made cream, but, hey, I guess the boxcovers sell. --- The biggest up and comers in the industry are West Coast Productions, Devil's Films, and Red Light District. --- Vivid's videos sell like crap. They are the most overrated company on the market. Except for the occasional Jenna Video or the Paul Norman Video, Vivid titles sell like horseshit with the exception of the cheap compilation lines that use the same scenes over and over and over again. --- Were it not for Jenna Jameson, Wicked Pictures would be dead in the water. Nothing else sells as advertised, except for the Jenna titles. --- According to him, Sin City Films doesn't make films the customers want. I'm not trying to play politically correct here. I'm just stating the viewpoints from a retail owner's point of view. The real sales/rental charts will come out hopefully this week and I promise it will be an eye-opener. Any questions or comments? (This was over 2 years ago. I have no idea if they still do this.) In contrast, Anabolic, Evil Angel, Digital Playground and a few others were COD only with no exceptions at our purchasing volume. Very few smut shacks move this much product and are forced to buy through a distributor. They have little to no marketing input from the distrbutor. |

However, if we are talking about more upscale stores that are more "female-friendly", I would be willing to bet that the Vivid's, Wicked's & VCA's of the world would do much better numbers. A survey consisting of one person is not a survey, it is just a single person's observations. This is not to say that I believe AVN's numbers. It is way too coincidental that their largest advertisers are always at the top of the Best Seller's List. |
| baronorca Member Montana 528 Posts 1/01 | I have had one call from AVN during this time (I don't remember what it was about, but it wasn't about sales and rental numbers). I also don't believe that stores would just trot out these figures to anyone (except maybe the IRS) Sales figures might be on the total number of a title sold to distributers. I have no idea how they could get any info on rentals. Good covers move videos, being on Howard Stern moves video, being on HBO (Real Sex) moves video, having Jenna Jameson moves video. Most of the people who (my exp only) rent/buy porn at a retail store do not have any idea of ViVid/ Evil Angel/ Max Hardcore/ etc. they just want to buy/rent something that has sex in it. Sad but true. |
