I find it strange that films like 'Deep Throat' and 'Behind the Green Door' haven't yet been released on Blu-ray.
After all, they both had hugely profitable runs at the box office, were shot on 35mm film and continue to remain 'infamous' to this day.
So, what's preventing this from happening?

I would suspect the cost of cleaning up the prints and releasing the Blu-ray are the issue. Distribpix seems to really be the only company taking the time to release classic titles on Blu-ray. And for them to release them they have to get the rights to release it.

I've just discovered that 'Deep Throat' was actually released on the now defunct HD-DVD format back in 2006: http://www.dvdmaniacs.net/review.php?id=50
Has anyone here watched that version?

Are you referring to this release? If so yes I do, but it isn't a real HD-DVD. The DVD itself is in standard definition with a computer only playable high definition version, I believe it is in WMV format but could be wrong.

Rights are a massive issue. Since this post, Vinegar Syndrome have released a couple of blu titles.

How good does the HD WMV file look?

I am not sure. I have never played the file. I don't like watching films on the computer so I have only seen the DVD part. I can't check right now since I am in the process of moving and it is in a box, somewhere.

There was an old thread or a couple discussing BluRay in general and why most guys don't care about bluray in general.
Now regarding old vintage films transferred to BluRay ... why? Most of them were not shot in high def and if they were shot in high def or better the original masters are probably not available. Lot of the DVD versions were just copies of VHS tapes.

35mm films are higher quality than hi-def, that's the whole point of something like blu-ray, it's trying to get closer to the quality of the actual print.

Sony has mismanaged Blu-ray so badly that some mainstream movies aren't released on Blu-ray. It adds expense and the return doesn't make the expense and effort worthwhile.
HD is fine most of the time. People are used to watching movies on NetFlix or rented from Redbox and they settle for HD dvd's. Most Blu ray players don't record and that's a problem.
4k might be a different story. But it's too early to tell.
