Matt Damon explained on Hot Ones why Hollywood changed its strategy: they no longer have guaranteed income from DVD sales so they have to take less risk in production, story, costs. I imagine it's similar with porn.
Without the income from DVD sales being what it used to be, I guess producers/directors are unwilling to take risks with new ideas so they repeat the same formula that sells. One DVD (say 5 or 6 scenes in a movie) costs the same as a monthly subscription to XEmpire or JulesJordan etc that offers thousands of scenes. It's always about money. In the 80s and 90s to make money you had to stand out and that led to creativity, a sexy performer or storyline enticing you to pick the DVD off the shelf, but now porn isn't sexy, and it's probably due to the set ups lacking creativity. It's reflected in the quality: low production value = low quality.
As a consumer, it's easy to find porn, too, just go to Pornhub or even twitter or reddit. It takes almost no effort and maybe that has something to do with it. Producers don't need to bother enticing you anymore. The internet changed everything.
There's also the performer angle. A performer back in the 80s and 90s, if she wanted to make money, she had to be a good fucker on camera or the DVD wouldn't sell. Now performers are making more money through OnlyFans. They don't need to spend all day on set in hair and make up, rehearsing lines, when they can just post a 5 minute blowjob and be wealthier for it. Holly Randall said on her podcast with Ginger Lynn that performers are now in control e.g if they don't like a certain hairstyle, they don't use it. That's not a bad thing, I'm sure a lot of women were made to do a lot of things on/off set they didn't want to do just for a pay check. But it means we probably won't see the likes of Night Trips ever again.
Anyway, I'd say Kayden Kross is probably producing the best porn right now for set ups. At least she's putting effort into it.
