Not content with censoring certain consensual acts, such as fisting, the BBFC (British Board of Film ‘Classification’), have now started censoring material from some of the most mainstream of adult entertainment companies, Vivid and Digital Playground:-

Jenna Loves Pain (Vivid)

When submitted to the BBFC the work had a running time of 78m 1s. To obtain this category cuts of 15m 35s were required. The cuts were Compulsory. Cuts required to sight of abusive and potentially harmful activity (in this instance choking and breath control during sex) in line with BBFC guidelines and policy and the Video Recordings Act 1984. Additional cuts were also required to sight of activity in which consent was not established (in this instance a performer shackled and wearing a ball gag) in line with BBFC guidelines and policy.
At the time of classification Vivid Entertainment Gmb H was the holder of the rights or the brand name for this work.

Pirates (Digital Playground)

When submitted to the BBFC the work had a running time of 269m 17s. To obtain this category cuts of 94m 13s were required. The cuts were Compulsory. Cuts are required to potentially harmful and abusive images - knife blade pressed on nipple / breast; and images which render woman incapable of giving or withdrawing consent - bound and gagged while engaged in sexual activity. These cuts are in accordance with the Video Recordings Act 1984 ('harm to potential viewers...or to society through the depiction of human sexual activity') and BBFC guidelines and policy. Cuts are also required to sight of urination during masturbation in accordance with current interpretation of Obscene Publications Act 1959.

Avoid the R18 certificate versions of these titles if you wish to see the uncensored originals. However, if UK Customs intercept your purchase from abroad, they will confiscate them!

Here are the specifics: http://www.bbfc.co.uk/classification/c_R18.php

Looks like in the UK, you can't opt out of the classification process like you can in the US.

Well, you can opt out, but it is illegal to sell unclassified movies in the UK, there is no "unrated" option. And that goes for every movie, even Disney has to pay the BBFC to classify their movies.

Face it, Struan, there's no such thing as a 'mainstream' adult entertainment company when porn's involved.

And I always thought the R18 is only a problem for the kind of porn that I don't watch anyway.

I get the impression that a lot of people don’t realise just how censored some R18 material can be. According to BBFC’s official figures, they censored 23.2 % of R18 titles submitted in 2005 – As though this weren’t bad enough, it is an artificially low figure because the BBFC does not make it a requirement of the ‘classification’ process that distributors declare whether they have censored material prior to submission, so a distributor, for obvious commercial reasons, could pre-censor a work down to what they expect the BBFC to allow, then get an ‘uncut’ certificate from the BBFC! Also, the bare percentage figure does not give any clue as to the quantity of material cut; e.g. it could be few seconds, minutes, or hours (e.g. Pirates has over 1.5 hours cut)!

Currently, it is only illegal to distribute or import material in excess of R18, but purchase within the UK or ownership was/is not illegal; Unfortunately, the UK & Scottish governments launched a joint ‘consultation’ last year on their proposals to criminalise the possession of what they referred to as ’Extreme’ porn – They listed 4 options for action to take, and even of they went for their preferred option, some consensual adult material would be included. The worst case scenario, option 1 if I remember correctly, would result in the inclusion of everything in excess of R18. So, mere possession of e.g. Pirates would see the owner liable to a (probable) prison sentence of up to 3 years!!! My guess, however, is that they will go for their preferred option, which is bad enough!

Just to clarify, I meant 'mainstream' in the context of adult entertainment e.g. producers of couples movies, relative to gonzo producers etc.
