| Alexia Sparks Member 60 of the time It works everytime! 110 Posts 1/07 | How is Vivid "# 1" when the bulk of folks on here can't stand it? is it just me? I live on the East Coast and Vivid (nor Wicked) does not go over at all with customers so how are they number one??? I really want to hear from Vivid and Wicked fans on this thread. who does it for you with their company? what is a great Vivid movie besides the obvious New Devil in Miss Jones. Same as with Wicked, I don't know anybody who really knows who Stormy is yet there's this fuss made over her and I just don't understand it. Wicked movies have been suffering lately cuz I use to be a fan (favorite Wicked movies ever Double Feature and Bride of Double Feature) but lately nothing doin. I dunno...someone help me out with this [Link] |
| caroline-NL Member 543 Posts 3/07 | I think especially couples ( or men looking for porn movies they can watch with their girlfriends ) rent or buy Vivid. Here in Europe, the new Vivid DVDs are almost "dead", but the older movies are going strong. Most of these customers arent the usual porn customers, they dont buy/rent anything else. Wicked has - in my opinion - a totally different customer base. Couples too, but many collectors, customers who want storylines and really good porn movies. Also fans of Kaylani or Jessica Drake etc. Wicked is now reaching the "red line", there was too much output in the last months, and most of the movies were moderate only. But there were some excellent ones too, like "Kaylani unleashed" or "Colors". Most of the US porn movies I have, are from WICKED. WICKED is evolving, at last in Europe, in a sort of "porn company for women". If you want to watch two really good movies, look after "Kaylani unleashed" and "Colors". But you can enjoy the Kaylani movie much more, if you are a fan of David Lynchs Blue Velvet. There are some nice allusions and insinuations. |

| benderset Deactivated User 477 Posts 8/06 | 1 Name Recognition if you have seen a porn movie then more than likely you know who Vivid is 2 Most people are under the ilusion that if its a Vivid movie then it has the hottest girls cause they only hire the very top girls. 3 You very rarely see IR in Vivid movies. While IR has a huge fan base there is also a very large base that doesnt want to see alittle white chick getting crammed by blackzilla. 4 You know buying a Vivid movie your not buying anything to freaky that if found later you would be to embarressed to admit its yours |
| Draxxx Senior Member 3831 Posts 2/07 | The boxcovers are well done and have more of an "erotic" image on them rather than pornographic. The names of the movies aren't porno type names. Most of the VIVID girls are known more for their looks rather than sex feats. They do features which go over much better on the PAY PER VIEW sex channels. It's the type of porn that couples would be more likely to watch. It's the home of lots of the most well known pornstars like Jenna, Tera, Janine, etc... It's stocked by most porn shops. It's got a "classy" reputation. I often find it amusing that some people who post here don't seem to grasp that their buying/viewing/tastes aren't reflective of "typical" porn watchers/buyers. Personally, I don't think VIVID is nearly as bad as some people make it out to be. I pick up VIVID movies based on the pornstar starring in the film. I usually check out the Tera Patrick stuff. I used be a fan of Chasey Lain, Kira Kener and a couple of others. I aslo like that when I buy or rent a DVD to see those girls I get to see them in at least 3 sex scenes rather than 1 like most Gonzo stuff. It's nice to see a pornstar walking around in normal clothes sometimes. Plus I really like that they put out compilations of their top stars at a very reasonable price. I like different types of porn and the VIVID stuff is a great alternative to the harder Gonzo stuff sometimes. Lately I've been checking out the SIN CITY stuff. They do feature-like movies that actually move along at a nice pace and the sex is harder without going over the top and they use the Gonzo girls more often. They seem to be doing everything right...at least the newer stuff I've seen. I'm kinda surprised that more people here don't like VIVID. When someone goes off on a rant about the stuff they don't like in porn in many cases VIVID fits the bill. |
| juha Senior Member 2752 Posts 3/05 | The most vocal fans are not necessarily the majority. I haven't bought much Vivid in the last couple of years. Their DVDs are technically below average. And they weren't able to continue having the "love goddesses" roster. But they still make lots of money cranking out comps with stuff from their Golden Age. I'm a big Wicked fan. I also like Digital Playground. |
| messhuga Member Stop the Swedes!!!!! 824 Posts 3/07 | The reason is coz the name is very popular with a mainstream Audience. They Sing up hot Chicks and then Promote them into the Mainstream and have them appear in Music magazines etc, where the Audience is very huge. Thats where their fanbase comes from.So the mainstream falk buy Vivid titles looking for the Chicks they saw in music magazines, television shows etc. Otherwise Both VIVID and Wicked make Porn that I religiously avoid. |
| Princess Chris Member 30 Posts 7/07 | As far as Vivid being number. Personally I don't like them, but it was said earlier, they promote to a more mainstream audience. Pretty much everyone knows who they are. |
| Savoy All-Star Member Sucker for Sinners 1844 Posts 12/06 | I can't speak too much about Vivid - I mostly buy Wicked titles - but like everyone has mentioned both Vivid and Wicked push their brands and work hard to crossover. They are like the non-porno porno companies. Three years ago, when I didn't watch a lick of porn - even I had heard of Wicked, Vivid and Seymore Butts - because of programs on HBO and Showtime. I like Wicked because when I buy one of their titles I feel like I am purchasing an actual movie. That there are characters. That the sets don't look as cheap and the outfits don't look as whore-ish. That care and attention is paid to cinematography and lighting and mood. That the majority of performers in them can actually deliver a line and do it with some semblance of skill. I like that there is romance and relationships in their movies. I admit even a Wicked-loving fool like myself gets bored with the sex scenes sometimes. (If I have to watch Julia Ann and Randy Spears do it cowgirl, side-lying, mish in that order one more time, I'll puke! Oh wait. I don't have to.. I don't have a favorite Wicked contract girl. No one girl makes me buy a title. The closest would be Carmen Hart who seems to be the dark horse amongst the group. I also think she is the most natural actress under contract at Wicked. Actually I buy because of the director. All the Wicked stuff I've bought lately has been David Stanley titles - but he's not everyone's cup of tea. Stormy Daniels' movies are cute, smart and the sex isn't too typical. Brad Armstrong is solid and dependable with his features. I've only seen one Michael Raven movie (Watching Samantha) and liked it. I'll have to see 'Colors' since Caroline mentioned it because the other Clousot-directed one I saw I didn't like. Randy Spears is like a baby-director. I'm waiting, but I do like his sex scenes. There's a nice natural flow to them and he focuses on connection not just body parts bumping. I have seen Jonathan Morgan's comedies. They are hilarious (Hercules!), but they did nothing to turn me on - I was laughing too hard. As for Vivid, the last PT title I watched was "Flasher". It was good. ChiChi LaRue doesn't really make features, more like story-strings to hang sex scenes on. I've yet to see an Eon McKai DVD. The last Wicked title I watched that I really liked was "Just Between Us". Simple story but very good execution. I got lost in the movie, absorbed in the characters. There was only one sex scene that felt like corny-porn (the g/g/g/g/g) and broke up the story world. The others were all integral to the tale. Carmen Hart did an amazing job. As did Brad Armstrong and Randy Spears. This is the closest thing to the kind of porn I dream of - and am still searching for. No Wicked title has left me completely in awe. That honor goes to VCA and Antonio Passolini. And runner-up status goes to Stanley's "Pretty Girl" when he was at Vivid. Edited by - Savoy on 9/9/2007 10:58:21 AM |

| Draxxx Senior Member 3831 Posts 2/07 | What exactly is so awful about VIVID? I can understand some people here not liking them because the sex scenes are kinda "vanilla" compared to other studios and they seem to mostly avoid interracial sex but other than that is there anything else that they do that gets such a negative response from so many of you? |
| Derek117 Senior Member 1605 Posts 1/06 | The consensus opinion from the "business side" of porn, as well as mainstream media like Forbes, LA Times, and CNN is that Vivid is the most profitable porn production company in the USA. Vivid's product sells throughout the world, on cable & satellite, and on the web. Vivid's product in the past had been very "erotic" (not nasty) and well-made; featuring girls like Jenteal, Janine, Raylene, Kobe Tai, and Nikki Tyler. Real beauties. However, since about 2001 Vivid has not been up to its own previous production standards. The videos they did with the equally beautiful Tawny Roberts, Briana Banks, or Sunrise Adams were not well-made or erotic. So, they disappointed Vivid's (and the star's) core customer base. The same thing appears to be currently happening with Monique Alexander's career. In none of these cases is it the performer who is at fault--it's the confusing product they are put in, the poor camera work, the uninspired direction, and the coporate philosophy that puts the company first--above the girls. Vivid have not been able to reverse this downward slide, and this failure, not gonzo or cheap production, or the internet is what's causing their reputation to suffer. And appears to result in the recent constant turnover of Vivid Girls--who are choosing to leave Vivid, at record speed (Lexie Marie, Kayden Kross, etc). IMO, Digital Playground is the "new" Vivid because of the quality of their product, their ability to favorably showcase their performers. And the presence of talent, behind the camera, who realize that porn is a "visual media." If Vivid can find a director with either the ability to tell a story they way Paul Thomas use to be able to, or with a strong visual eye, like Andrew Blake, then they can retain quality Contract Girls. And recover some of their past glory. |
| darkside762000 Member United Kingdom 91 Posts 3/06 | You have to realise that there is a vast 'silent majority' out there that only buys porn movies occasionally and will go with what they know, be a studio or a starlet whose name they've heard on Howard Stern or on a TV show. These people don't want to rent stuff like 'Rim My Gape' or 'Squirt In My Gape' or whatever other gone-off-on-a-tangent gonzo niche is getting strip mined this month. Some folks/couples will baulk at anal scenes, others don't want to see girl/girl, and not because it's "weak, cop out shit", but because it's a bit too kinky for them. Companies that make features are in an entirely different boat to gonzo companies. Who's going to rent or order the PPV of a softcore cut of something like Jules Jordan's 'Pump My Ass Full Of Cum' when you won't be able to see any anal or any anal creampies? Nobody, that's who. Vivid et al can pump out softcore versions of their big features and make a tidy chunk of change off of them...basically, they can reach markets and outlets that your average gonzo flick can't. The other reason Vivid and Wicked and co. are the top dogs? Here's the dirtiest little secret of them all...they have more people paying money for their products rather than just downloading them for free. Feature fans want the whole package...storyline, commentary track, BTS featurette, etc., whereas gonzo fans might just want the one scene. Whilst features are getting fileshared and pirated, it's nowhere near on the same scale as gonzos are. If a guy want's a porno to watch with his lady to get her in the mood, it's probably not going to be double-anal gonzo flick, and it's probably going to be an original as well, because he doesn't want to appear to be some broke, cheap-ass loser, does he? Picture the scene: "Honey, you know that Amy Winehouse CD you've been dropping hints about? Well, I downloaded it off of some filesharing site and burned it to a blank CD-R...Happy Birthday!". Is this guy getting a blowjob? No...and it's the same deal with DVDs too. At the end of the day, it's all about who's making money. For all I know, more people might watch a West Coast Productions DVD than watch a Vivid one, but the difference is that more people are paying to watch the Vivid one. Bear this in mind the next time your favourite gonzo starlet signs a contract with a feature company and gets ill-advised and totally unwarranted plastic surgery. |
| RandomPrecision Senior Member Enjoy! 8175 Posts 3/06 | Vivid has always been their own biggest fan. I can remember seeing the (admittedly well done) boxes the first time I entered a porn store. I wasn't hip to it and got taken. Over the years, every Vivid movie I've ever seen has been utter crap. I couldn't find something good in them even if I could somehow forget it was a Vivid flick. I haven't seen too many Wicked flicks and certainly none lately so I can't say about them. Vivid has been around forever, the brand is well known (for all the wrong reasons) and they do a good job advertising themselves. |
| Porn Addict Member I Shoot Porn 218 Posts 12/05 | They're #1 because they advertise in key spots that give that appearance. / End Short Answer Their movie quality is below average as is their DVD production. Any newer Vivid movie I've rented gave me the impression that that I'm watching a 3rd generation dub from VHS. I don't understand how they can put so much money into a product and have it still look dark and shitty. They're probably #1 because they tackle a lot more avenues and have the widest name recognition. So, in that sense... they've earned the ranking. But from a hardcore porn fan's point of view, they're not even on the map. - PornAddict The Official Porn Addict Home Page |

Yes, Digital Playground is much, much better now, but not every videostore offers them. At least not in Europe. Its the "Jenna effect", and I have to admit, I dont understand it, as I dont understand the "Paris Hilton effect". How many had bought and rented this awfull, boring and overhyped rip-off DVD ? And so, many people are looking for a Jenna movie, because they have heard, that " she is the porn superstar and she is/was under contract by VIVID." Thats all. A videostore owner in Germany once told me, some of these customers dont rent porn, and they nearly are ashamed and say to him : " Oh, sorry, I dont like porn. But Ive read an article in this music magazine XY about Jenna J. So can you recommend one movie ? " Its frightening, how easy it is to manipulate people..... |

I liked the Janine stuff a lot. She seems into the sex and has a strong sex appeal about her. The Tera Patrick stuff I like mostly because I like the way Tera looks. Her sex scenes are merely okay to me. But I'm so into her looks it doesn't bother me much. I buy the VIVID compilations from time to time and enjoy them. I don't even rent them. I know a guy that owns 1,000 Vivid films. He loves their fare. His taste in porn is different from mine which is fine. He has his likes and I have mine. If you like their fare, rent 'em and buy 'em. If you don't, don't rent 'em and don't buy 'em. Pretty simple. |
| Christopher256 Member 146 Posts 8/05 | Why are they popular? Well they're the kind of porn couples watch, because almost exclusively their scenes are with couples. No arobics, no DPs, no cum coming out of a woman's ass. They're safe. I understand why they have appeal from a couple's perspective. Also some guys honestly like these tamer movies more. However most porn watching men and imagine many women realise after discovering other studios that they make better porn, while Vivid and Wicked are trying too hard to make cinematic erotic experiences not that much more hardcore than something late night on Cinemax. |
| danl Member 436 Posts 3/05 | You see, I "dare" to hold adult film writers, directors and performers up to the same standards as their main-stream counter-parts, sans the extravagant budgets, of course. Thus, in what I like to call the "steam-stream" genre, I want to see intense eroticism, incorporated with high drama and strong acting skills--PORN PLUS, I call it. That way, the old "in and out" has a purpose and a reason (plot) as well as, for me, a relief from the sexual OVERKLL that is the essence of gonzo, and frankly, can get downright BORING!, at times. As a result of MY preferences, there are only a few adult film companies who even come close to these expectations, and at the TOP of MY list is Wicked Pictures. In Brad Armstrong and Michael Raven, as well as the up and "cumming" Stormy, Wicked has three of the VERY BEST directors in the adult film industry, in MY OPINION, and as a result, CONSISTENTLY turns out a product geared to stimulating BOTH components of the male libido--the brain and the penis! Add to this, the stunning SEXPIAN-- my word for a combination of thespian and sexual dynamics in the same film-- magnetism of Jessica Drake, the industry's FINEST feature film female performer, and I am rarely displeased with a Wicked feature---although, I DO wish, Wicked' s directors (ESPECIALLY Brad Armstrong) would emulate the technique of most main-steam directors, and utilize the NATURAL aspect of cigarette smoking more to emphasize certain, sexy female character roles. Other than Wicked, Digial Playground, Adam and Eve, and Private, OCASSIONALLY produce the type of porn I enjoy---as for VIVID, I'm like the original poster---somewhere along the way, they LOST me. That's sad too, for Paul Thomas, at one time, was one of my very favorite directors--although, I still seek out ANYTHING from Savanna Samson, another true industry SEXPIAN, and a Vivid contract girl---just wish, her and Wicked would "hook-up." |

| Kolbath Member 31 Posts 8/07 | #1: Most people watch porn for the porn. I think most people are with me when I say that I watch to see beautiful women get fucked, preferably in the ass. I do not need to see a fifty-second closeup of a cock sliding in and out. I prefer to see the effect that cock is having on the beautiful woman. It could be Don Ho hammering Julia Fucking Childs for all we know once the camera has zoomed in. ESPECIALLY on important parts of the fucking scene. When the cock is first sliding into a woman's ass there is nothing sexier than the expression of mingled pain, pleasure, and even a little surprise that's on her face. Zooming in on cheeks is just plain stupid. Know your audience! (Hence the 'psychology' of porn.) #2: Cinematography problems are RAMPANT in Vivid productions because every one of these idiots working for them seems to think they are Francis Ford Fuckola. Stop backlighting the performers. Stop adding special effects. I don't need or want to see laser beams shoot out of the guys asshole. Stop jump cutting during the cumshot. Stop match cutting during the initial penetration. Use some basic common sense and stop trying to get creative. No matter how many awards you win for best ass gaping cumshot with nine male performers on one helpless female, you're not going to win a fucking Oscar, so back off the iMovie plugins for a little while, dammit. I don't mean to be insulting, so if anyone here works for Vivid, please take my comments as they are intended. You're probably not stupid, you were just tired that day. I HATE Vivid. I make it a practice to turn Vivid box covers to face the wall whenever I'm in the local porn shop. (Yeah, that was me.) To think of the gorgeous women they've had access to, and the way they've fucked things up burns my ass. -K- |

They also feature some good sex, and especially in the case of the first one, nasty also. The best thing about it is, hence the title, the "chemistry" that the performers have with each other, since the premise is to put a group of pornstars in a house for a weekend, give them cameras, and let them fuck like rabbits, no instructions necessary. enjoy |

| Kolbath Member 31 Posts 8/07 | My opinion of Vivid is that they are a crap company making a crap product because their directorial/editing style is too self-inflated. They use cinematic techniques like they think they are Steven Fucking Speilberg, and they use most of them incorrectly. Bad lighting has nothing to do with "couples porn" it has to do with directorial incompetence. Out-of-place jump or match cuts in the middle of a scene or focusing on penetration to the detriment of everything else that is going on are not "couples porn," it's editing buffoonery. Vivid is also famous for the triangle shot that drives people nuts: the camera is focused on some damn painting on the wall, artificial plant in the corner, or out the damn window while the performers go to town just out of frame. I've been hearing people bitch about that for decades in multiple forums. This is simple bad direction. It's not romance, poetry on film, or art, it's fucking stupidity. Quick, name the last five mainstream movies that used that technique (unless they were trying to build a Kaiser Soje suspense in some manner.) There aren't any, because film is about showing the audience a story and making them believe that it's actually taking place. Even PORN filmography needs to follow similar guidelines. If you happen to love Vivid's product, then great. I'm glad they make porn that you enjoy. However ALL cinematic photography is escapism, from watching "The Bourne Ultimatum" to watching, "Triple Cock Anal Rippers Volume 23." If the camera angles, lighting, and editing are so poorly done that it jars you out of the suspension of disbelief that is necessary for absorption in ANY storytelling medium, then it interferes with the delivery of the product by interfering with the escapism. In short, it is Vivid's MECHANICS that piss me off more than anything else, not the fact that they don't make a specific type of porn I happen to enjoy. They are "Number One" solely as the result of their marketing strategy and hard work mainstreaming their talent (which I give them credit for), and not due to any wonderful product or ability behind the camera that they have demonstrated. This is, of course, my opinion, but I believe that I have provided ample supportive reasoning. If you feel differently, that's fine by me, but please do not tell me I don't have the right to present my opinion here. Respectfully; -K- |
