I hate to beat up on an easy target like Vivid, but has anyone noticed that the music score (as in music soundtrack) to their "classic" movies has been changed in almost everyone of their Wave releases?

In ANONYMOUS, the sexy dance between Nikki Dial and Tiffany Mynx uses different music which, for anyone who remembers their scene, can be jarring since we don't get another rock and roll track, but instead, an inappropriate jazzy tune.

And in the great lesbian encounter between Jamie Summers and Christy Canyon in VICTIM OF LOVE 2, we hear a dramatic "classical" music score which just doesn't fit!

Of all things to "update," why is Vivid giving us different music in their DVDs? Is it a copyright issue? Is it because they are trying to be creative?

I would be just as happy if they kept their videos intact (scenes and music) as originally released. Weird stuff...

I'm going to take a stab at this since no one else has stepped up.

I would guess it is a copyright/licensing issue. I say this because I have observed
similar changes, not on DVD, but on cable. For instance, none of the same music
from the hardcore version of the Vivid film "Scandal" was used in the cable version.
In fact, I can not recall ever hearing any of the music pieces from the hardcore
"Scandal" in cable versions of ANY Vivid title.

It looks like they're making changes to avoid paying royalties to the "creators"
of these musical masterpieces.

Well, I remember when Playboy stopped using pop music in their Playmate Videos, and instead used sound-alikes which changed every third note of a Top Ten song and altered the lyrics.

But I can't imagine Vivid not owning the music to their movies outright. And wouldn't it cost more to have musical artists [term used advisedly] create new music in the production?

And wouldn't it be weird that the music composers have royalty rights and the actresses and actors wouldn't?

But I do see your point. And I agree the royalties and copyrights are probably the issue.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Ginger On The Rocks music score had been altered as well. I find it strange that it would be a royalty issue. Would it not make more sense for these studios to just pay a one time fee for each movies musical score? It does not make sense to change the music on an early 80's movie released on dvd. I'd much rather have the original score, especially if the music fits the fashion of the time that it was made. Even if the music is cheesy, the sound probably fit that era anyway.

In the case of "Ginger On The Rocks", and other titles, it could be some lame
attempt to "update" the film, and give it a newer look (go figure). However,
I still truly believe the answer lies with copyright or licensing issues.

To quote Sherlock Holmes; "When you have eliminated all which is impossible,
then whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth".
