in one of the articles about the HIV outbreak there was some reporting on the effect condom-only has on sales - as in a very bad effect. The reporter was told this and his reply to the person who gave him this information was to suggest that it seemed that VIVID and the other condom-only companies seemed to be doing very well. The porn insider replied, paraphrasing from memory here, "Well everybody knows that VIVID et al have surrendered the American retail market for adult movies". So then the reporter went to VIVID's sales guy Howard Levine to responed to that and Howard Levine said it was bullshit, that VIVID has surrendered nothing and its titles still outsell everybody else.

So? Do you think he's telling the truth? Does the average new release feature video from VIVID sell retail as much or more than a new release from Evil Angel or Redlight District?

Let's leave Jenna Loves Bella out of it, anything Jenna out of it cuz you could put Jenna Loves Dave Pounder on a box cover and it would still sell 20,000 DVD's.
I'm talking about your average feature from VIVID.

He might be right, features still sell to the average guy who only rents or buys porn occassionally, it's the box covers - the hot glamour chicks. Raincoaters are not huge in number, they are listened to because they do buy alot more than the occassional porn buyer. I know when I started renting porn back in the mid 80's I got suckered in by the box covers. It took a long time until i realized the 'good stuff' was from the gonzo studios with the tackier box covers. But it really takes alot of time and knowledge to figure it all out and the average person just doesn't put that much thought or effort into porn.
I'm still surprised that many young guys I know, webmasters who deal with porn for a living, seemingly think the porn industry begins and ends with Jenna Jameson, Jill Kelly, Krystal Steal etc - they don't even know what Evil Angel is or what 'gonzo' means.

Which is why for a guy from the world of Internet porn, me, spends alot of time hanging around here and making friends with people from the movie industry. i am like a bridge of knowledge - I'm not going to embarass anybody but I've had to explain to very big players in the Internet business, huge actually, who Aurora Snow is, what Redlight District is, what is Buttman, and on and on.

As I've mentioned elsewhere, the store clerks I've talked to in Dallas all say that compilations are their number one sellers. Considering that Vivid puts out a boat load of comps I wouldn't be surprised if they're number one.

As far as features go, Its tuff to say, what vivid has is recongition, and in porn, that is priceless, yeah Evil Angel, Platinum X, Redlight, Devil's Films, Digital Sin, Digital Playground, Zero Tolerance, and a meriad of others, are turning out better product, but If what hardware says is true about the comps, and I don't doubt him for a second, then thier is a hell of a lot of people out there who when they do look for a feature, they see the first thing with a vivid girl, or vivid on it, and it rings a bell, and they say, "oh I'll take that one". Thier like gerbils to a feeder bar.

That and the fact that Vivid gets a lot of the hugely known porn girls after the fact, and many of thier fans will follow. I mean lets face it, there is very little advertising to be seen unless your looking for it in the adult industry, the average joe shlub who doesn't know Gauge from Gorman Thomas, is just sorely informed and Vivid makes the biggest splashes in the water to draw attention. So anyway, in english, yeah It would not suprise me if Vivid sells the most.

I think some companies are getting pretty damned close though, and I think title to title are maybe close, it's just that Vivid puts out so many comps, and then a big glitzy feature with big name girls, and that bumps up the average for them. I'm sure some of the "good" companies are selling thier features pretty damned close with Vivid on sales.

It would be interesting to see some numbers for once, I can not for the life of me understand why everyone is so sheepish on numbers.

Well, it's hit or miss as to whether my local store (run by a distributor) carries individual Vivid titles. If he doesn't get a title for his store, that means that the stores to which he distributes doesnt get that title either.

The guys at the store tell me that some Vivid titles do well, but most don't.

let's leave compilations out of it. Just the Vivid features versus gonzo DVD's - retail/rental sales from brick and mortar and online stores.

how does the compilation business work? I see these insane low prices - like 3.99 a DVD - doesn't the DVD and the plastic case cost at least a couple bucks?

where do the scenes on the compilations come from? bought from other companies? how much do the compilations companies pay for scenes to put in their compilation vids?

i had a guy who contacted me wanting to know if I had or could find him hardcore video content not yet sold on DVD or VHS, web content, that he could sell he said for good money to alot of different markets. Maybe one of those markets was compilation vids. I did know a web guy who had bombed out with his own website and he took his scenes, which were actually pretty good quality with A list talent around to some studios. I think he said VCA offered him like $400 a scene, scenes cost him triple that, some much more than that.

Bear in mind that the same scenes get used over and over again, so the cost gets distributed over a much larger run than a feature release has. In some instances companies buy from other people's catalogs. In Vivid's case, the material is all their own, so they can produce "new" comps for the cost of editing the scenes together and putting them on the media, which means they probably make more profit from a $9.99 comp DVD than from a new release.

I don't think they just edit the scenes together..they actually edit the scenes..!!

Yes, I've heard they edit the scenes to fit more of them onto their compilations, however I would be very suprised if they went back to the source and repeated the process every time they put a new comp together.

I wouldn't be surprised if Leisure Time comps are best sellers in that store also.

I guess that's the difference between people who will buy any porn that's cheap and die hard pornfans ;-)
