Why in the hell must these companies put out so damned many compilations? Between them, I count 69 compilations that include at least one scene with Monique Alexander. In the next year, I'm sure there'll be 50 or so regurgitations of Keri Sable's handful of scenes done for Wicked. George Bush vs. Vivid/Wicked/Sin City in the championship round of "I Know It's Bull Shit, But I'm Gonna Try And Sneak It Past You Anyway."

I don't understand what your so upset about. Why are you pointing fingers at these particular companies. Every company releases comps. Besides what else are the supposed to do with the footage? Burn it as to not over expose the performer? Financially it makes sense. Comps don't cost the company anything except the reediting and new packaging.

Let's just say that there's a lot of low-hanging fruit out there for these guys to pick. A company like Vivid (or more likely still, Leisure Time) could put out the title "Catherine The Great's Stolen Sex Video!" and there'd probably be plenty of folks out there going "Hey, it's about time! I gotta take a look at that!" (as they whip out their credit cards)

Vivid et al. will be more reasonable with their compilations when the market forces them to do so. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for this to happen.

Ah, a completist, I see.

I know that at one time compilations sold more than regular movies. I suspect that's still true. After all, to the casual porn buyer they look like a good deal.

A good comp is a fine thing.

But I agree that Vivid is the master of comp-rip-off.

I'm willing to pay good money for a "Complete Taylor Hayes" or a "Complete Devon" disc set.

But I'm not buying a new comp every month just to find out that I already own half of the scenes on the "new" comp.

Comps are good things... especially when (if) you know what you're getting.

In the case of the Vivid & Wicked stuff, it allows me to pick up material that interests me that I know I don't have (because I don't buy their features as a rule).
But, I agree, you need to be careful so you don't buy the same material two and three times with different titles slapped on it.

If it wasn't for comps, I never would have gotten the spectacular Nikki Tyler/Peter North scene from Amazing Sex Talk.
Comps often allow me to get DVD releases of older scenes from the VHS Era that are unavailable any other way.

As long as they're fairly-priced (under $10 max) and you have a good idea of what you're getting, comps can be a godsend to the serious collector and/or dedicated stroker

I like the idea of comps, but I don't like how some companies will release several comps with the same theme (same starlet, or same fetish) and many scenes will be repeated on more than one of the comps. I would much prefer 2 comps for one theme with all different scenes than 3 or 4 comps with some scenes repeated 2 or 3 times between them. I mean, it's okay if a scene where starlet X is wearing a nurses outfit and takes the cumshot on her feet is put in a comp devoted to starlet X, and a comp with a nurses theme, and a foot fetish comp. But when that one scene is put into 2 or 3 compilations for each of those categories (and probably a few other categories as well) a consumer may begin to lose respect for that company.

I consider those 4H comps pollution when I try to order new movies online. I wonder if people really buy that stuff.

For 7 years we at Anarchy used to work at Sin City. 4HR were created to bring more cash to the company and to have cheap product to trade. You can buy 4hrs for .55 cents from other companies. How do they make profit? I don't know.

I agree 95% of comps are junk. The only time they are good is if buying the ultimate- type collections that Juha was talking about. My friends always ask me what to look for when buying porn I always start off with the same rule; If it had 4hrs written on the side stay away.

Being included in too many compilations can't be too good for a porn actress. In my opinion, Vivid is crapping all over the reputation of their top commodity by turning Monique Alexander into the Queen of the Compilation. It's to the point that, when I see her name on ANY Vivid product, my immediate assumption is that it is not worth watching.

Sure, worthy if it rears it's head as a new piece of footage forgotten/left out of another more relevant title. But those companies do seem a little "overkill" for compilations.

As already stated, IMO, the only worthwhile comps are those "Best of (star)" series, not the "Best of (body parts; sex acts, etc.)". The latter is worthless...

Is Monique Alexander actually still filming anything these days? After the word of her "doing guys on film" hit the streets, I haven't seen "dick" from her, literally. Then again, I prefer her golden days when she just posed on a few sites such as ALS Scan.

I also agree that a good comp is a fine thing, but I have noticed that companies are stying to get new release price for over compressed poor quality comps.

Shame on them!

Comps in and by themselves, could be uses as a good marketing tool; for the company to market the DVD/VHS tape that it was taken from. But these dummy don't usually put the name of the video on the comp to inform the viewer were the scene was from nor supply the credits of the stars in the scenes... so if it a hot scene you are totally f*cked.

When will a marketing person be in charge of comps; so that both the buy and seller will be rewarded after viewing them?

Completely agree with that view Midtown .
Hence I never buy a compilaton. The ones from Sin City even
are compressed at an ungodly bitrate so that one gets a lot
of artifacts in the picture - no thanks.
And yes it does damage the reputation of a star, I am sure.
But then so does working for one of these comoanies. Vivid and
Wicked became 'strong not watch' for me a couple of years ago,
Sin City now is in that boat as well.
Sure Anabolic does publish 'Best of ..' editions as well but
at least they clearly label the content so that one can avoid
double purchases.

The problem I have with Vivid is they (seemingly) have this aura about them that they are above all the other people who produce porn; as if to say, "Sure we make porn, but we're not like those other companies, they're gross and depraved."

And then they have movies with plots and costuming, condoms, and, and…thzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Just get on with it already. And I just don't care about Jenna Jameson, or Janine (and the regrettable tattoo gallery she calls her arms) or their hundreds of dyke scenes and the resulting compilations.

By the by, compilations suck 99% of the time. I've seen one too many bad Leisure Time comps, so I'm very wary of compilations.

The Kick Ass Chicks series are pretty good comps. They aren't 4 hours long, they're normal length. When a girl has done enough scenes for Kick Ass Pictures that together they would have a respectable running time, and they know that that girl has some star power, they will put all of her scenes for Kick Ass up to that date into one comp. If she's still in the business and isn't signed exclusively with another company, they may even have her do a new scene. That series is priced as a new release instead of long comp, though. But if you really like one girl but aren't so crazy about some of the other girls in the original KAP movies she was in, they are a good buy to get just her scenes. I have gathered that the Private Life and Private Story series have the same concept. I own several of those, but I haven't watched any of them yet.

I find it odd that a gonzo fan, which Im assuming you are is calling another company arrogant and smug. Gonzo fans are the worst when it comes to that, whether its demanding to see a girls anus through a microscope or demanding strange sex acts done in a precise manner(atogm,atp)..and then complain when they dont get their fix(Brandon Iron's..AGSOI,Bakers Dozen) or when producers and performers do not do exactly as they've been told

Here's an idea. Do not buy Vivid films and enjoy the type of films that you like. Crazy concept!!

As far as arrogance goes, I don't think Vivid can hold a candle to Rob Black.

Aside from not telling you what movies the scenes come from, the biggest problem I have with comps is that the scenes are often cut down. Boo!!!

As a general rule I do not buy comps ever. I just buy the originals if I am that interested.

Evil Angel would probably be in exception just because all of the scenes in one place.

That being said I wish most online stores would allow you to select a "don't list comps" option when viewing recent releases. In some cases you will find one "new" tape for every 20 comps on the list.

I make it a rule to avoid Vivid products and stick to the studios, girls, and sex acts I enjoy watching, so I'm with you on that point. To do otherwise would result in nothing but disappointment.

I don't believe I have ever posted on this board to a director demanding he/she do one thing or another in their movie(s). I do understand what you mean about Brandon Irons' series AGSOI & Baker's Dozen, because that thread is a deluge of demands put upon Brandon, mostly with him demurring and asking posters to be patient.

I've bought a number of Vivid comps in the past - especially when I was finding my feet in the adult DVD world. I found it a very efficient way of getting specific stuff on the stars I liked. There is a "bang for your buck" argument here I feel. If you've seen one or two Dyanna Lauren scenes, for instance, its a lot more cost effective to buy 1 $5.95 comp from Five Star with 20 scenes than 10 individual movies where she might only appear in 15 scenes across all the films.

However what I do object to is the false advertising - or maybe false representation - of comps. ie a line that purports to a be a 4hr featuring a particular star and yet they only appear in one out of every 3 scenes - or in my worst case scenario in just 1 scene out of 25 even though the star's name was on the cover and in the title of the comp.

Of course it would be really useful to buyers if there were more reviews of comps which broke down the discs and let everyone know what scenes are included and from which movies they come. Then again with the amount of comps being released I would imagine it would be tricky to keep up.

Could not agree more.
Now that alone would be a strong reason not to buy Vivid.
Ever.
But the reason why I outright hate them is that they ruin so
many great stars. Which then are not longer available for the
real thing. Briana and Jeanine just being two of them.

So it's not that I want Vivid to make Gonzo - I wouldn't touch
a Vivid DVD in my lifetime - I wish they wouldn't limit
their stars to their inferior productions.

quarrion,
This is a comp thread.
I'm really tired of the raincoaters who post their general complaint about Vivid in each and every thread.

Yes, Vivid caters to couples market.
And we all know that not everybody likes it.

Personally i buy vivid comp here and there, because i actually don't buy any vivid normal movies, so everything i got on the compil is new to me, there a lot of hot chicks even if its not the best sex possible(not much a fan of the vivid style) but since the girls are hot... All the vivid comp i buyed, when the stars was mentioned as the lead, it was the case, when there was plenty of name on the cover, all these girls where in it. For 6 to 10$, thats pretty good. But i agree that reviewing compil could be really helpfull, i buyed 2 really poor compil, one with B.Banks on the cover, the other Tera Patrick and they where really looking like they where comp about these girls, and it was 1 scene of them in the whole movie...it was not vivid stuff. Vivid satisfy me over there description.

And well for people not liking vivid comp etc, nobody force you to buy them...usually comp looks like comp, vivid always put a name like "chicks with big dicks" or things like that.

Nah, it's a thread about the 'compilation hell' from these
companies, Vivid mentioned foremost on the list.

I posted my dislikes for Vivid comps specifically before the
conclusive response why not to buy Vivid in general.

There is no such a thing as too much Vivid bashing. But to
stay on track, I specifically explained what upsets me about
Vivid. What they produce and if there's such a thing as a
couple market, is immaterial. My complaint is about their
drainage of talent for the rest of the market.

And as for Vivid comps - the few I made the mistale of
purchasing - they do not warn you where the material is cut
from, so you can end up with lots of double footage.
Admittedly, it's not as bad as in the cases of Leisure Time
or Maverick and also the stars on the box art are indeed
somewhere in the footage. But that'a about as much credit
as I can award them.

I wonder how Wicked's recent introduction into the world of compilations (I think the first batch, which included "Blondilicious", was released in the fall of 2004) has affected the sales of their features and especially, their Jenna back catalog.

I guess the assumption is that couples buy features but if you are a casual adult film consumer why buy "Jenna Ink" or "Flashpoint" for $20-$30 when you can get a four hour compilation like "Jennarous Proportions", "Jenna's Tough Love" or "Jenna's Invasion of the Booty Snatchers" for $10-$15?

Does anyone else think Wicked having Jenna's back catalog is kind of like Michael Jackson owning most of the Beatles' songs?

Personally, I really love all of the Club Jenna films. Maybe, they are not "gonzo" enough for everyone but then I like "Use Your Illusion" more than "Appetite for Destruction" (which in my mind is sort of relevant.) I think the Sky Laurent ones are great and am looking forward to Jenna as a director ("The Provocateur.")

Maybe Club Jenna can do what Howard Stern did in the last couple days and bought back all his old radio material. Wicked would probably charge more than $2 million.

Hmmmm....Jenna Jameson with Club Jenna is like Howard Stern with Sirius. Discuss. Support all points. Grammar will be counted.

Well, this post has diverged from the discussion of compilations but the fact of the matter is they are probably the most profitable thing any adult film company makes no matter what the quality of them are.

Yeah, just crazy that the producers of a star's films would own that part of the star's back catalogue.

Mark Hamill should own the original Star Wars films, too.

As for comps, some can be ok, though I'm a far cry from a completist for any starlet's scenes. I'm happy to pay full price for Private's "Private life of.." series and for their annual best ofs (Diamonds, Pearls, Milennium, etc). "The Private Story of.." series on the other hand.. nope.

I like compilations if they're done well. I just hate the ones in which the company in question (which ever it happens to be) scrapes up every known scene that depicts whatever the specialty of the compilation is (without regard to whether or not it's actually a strakable scene). I end up sitting here yawning through half of most of the compilations I see. There's just not much value to a vid (particularly a compilation, which should, in theory, be much easier to do) that doesn't keep the strokable material coming in a reasonably constant flow.

But Vivid/Wicked is/are by no means the worst offenders.

I knew when I wrote that I probably wasn't clear enough. I didn't mean to imply it was UNFAIR that Wicked owned Jenna's back catalogue, but rather that a healthy chunk of their profits come from someone who hasn't been associated with them from almost a decade. While I absolutely love the Wicked contract actresses, a lot of Wicked's profits come from someone they have nothing to do with anymore. Sort of like how almost all of the income Mr. Jackson receives comes from his song holdings.

Sorry for the confusion.

I'm not a Vived or Wicked fan because I don't like feature movies. I never buy compilations in general. You never now which scenes are part of the compilation and mostly the scenes are cut down.

No worries Brian, but as you point out, it's a normal thing in business. Until a few years ago, Lucas was endlessly milking 97% of his cash from 3 25-year-old films that starred Harrison Ford, mark Hamill, et al.

On the other hand, would Harisson Ford have been the star he is today without having been in Lucas' film? By the same token, would Jenna be all she is today without Wicked's marketing machine behind her? It's a two-way street, and common in the entertainment world, though i still feel the MJ comparison isn't an especially good one..
