I'm also rather skeptical about the whole "production downturn" thing. DVD may be almost dead - and AFAICT directors who made their name in the DVD market are often the most vocal to complain - but there's so incredibly much porn being shot for the internet these days that I find those claims somewhat questionable. What's true is: A) A lot of production is happening outside LA now, mainly in Florida and Las Vegas, and B) the middle market segment has kinda died on the production side, with much more production being done by either the large conglomerates (Mindgeek/Brazzers/Mofos/etc., La Touraine/Naughty America, Porn Pros, etc.), or by a long tail of very small operations. The funny part is you mention sites like Brazzers, NA, and PornPros as doing more productions, when the truth is that I'm fairly sure that all three of those companies are actually releasing very close to the same amount of videos as they did 5-8 years ago. To use Naughty America as a specific example, in 2008 they were releasing about 13 scenes a week. Right now, including all of their offshoots, they're releasing 15. IIRC, Brazzers has actually gone down in terms of the number of weekly releases over the years (it's now 14, when it used to be something like 15-16). There's been some new sites from the conglomerates to spring up in the meantime, but not enough to replace the dozens of studios that went out of business that were releasing multiple DVDs monthly. And no, the rise of clip sites doesn't come close to replacing it, either, since many of them are actually run by the performers themselves, which has an entirely different revenue stream. [Link] |
