I bought Young Ripe Melons's #5 this week (Red Light District/Vince Vouyer Productions). To my dismay, I found that there was a "Vouyer Productions" logo watermark at the bottom right corner of the picture on this disc.

It was relatively small (taller but narrower than the one that Jules used to have) and it's relatively transparent. It's small and transparent enough that on my 34" set, I couldn't read the "Productions", but could tell that something was there. The "Vouyer" could be read easily.

I understand why Vince is doing this. But I don't care. I WILL NOT BUY DVD'S WITH WATERMARKS ON THEM . The fact that websites are stealing his content is not my problem. Damaging the product that he expects us to buy, it not the answer. On top of that, as Jules discovered, by keeping the watermark relatively small and transparent makes it virtually invisible when the lower resolution version is downloaded from a website.

So what does this accomplish. He pisses off the people who actually purchase his product and has absolutely no effect on those who are stealing it for their websites.

I hope that it is only Vince who is doing this and not all of Red Light District. I'd hate to have to stop buying all RLD product. But that's what will happen if all of RLD begins using watermarks. On the bright side, if all of RLD begins using watermarks, it will save me the ~ $500 that I spend annually on RLD titles.

I never buy RLD movies so it's not really a problem for me but I agree with you Bill. I also hate watermarked movies because you always notice the logo no matter how hard you try to ignore it and often they sure get in the way of the action.

Yup checked it out, its there... I'm not sure if I would have seen it though - it's VERY small and transparent. I have no feelings either way on it, I understand why it there, and it's easy for me to not concentrate on it.

actually the watermark worked quite well, when all was said and done, the mpegs were clearly maked julesjordan.com
it was just lower resolution on the websites that showed the screen captures. By watermaking a few of my dvds it will help me greatly in my court case with adultbouncer.com

They must not have timed the UPS delivery window properly. My local store is owned by a distributor. They had it yesterday.

I may be in the minority here, but I have no issues with watermarks whatsoever. In fact in some way I support them. The Jules watermarks never bothered me, and I dont mind them because I know it helps a little in eliminating those bastard websites that steal content and call it their own, from stealing the stuff. I think it takes people like jules and Vince, to take a stand and say "damnit all, your not stealing my work anymore and if you do, I want credit for it" if were ever going to be rid of mass attack piracy.

I only buy porn that I really want, mostly based on the performers and directors, I don't buy stuff that is iffy to me or for an act or something in the film. This said, I'll be damned if I'm going to pass up a DVD that has my favorite talent in it, in the right kind of genre, and directed by a known person I like, just because it has a little transparent logo on it.

If your a TV watcher, any of you will have no doubt noticed the ever growing size of the network logos on screen corners on many a station. Cable especially, now I pay a goodly sum for my satalite TV, but again I'm not going to boycott TV because of it. What is pissing me off though is how if you subscribe to any of the major movie channel networks, HBO, Cinemax...., they persistantly break in with a 20% screen covering to get you to sign up if your not a subscriber, or worse yet some are having these little animations fly all over the screen every so many minutes as to draw extra attention to themselves.

I guess what I am saying, is be glad that all that is there is a tiny limitedly visable logo on a very small number of discs. It could be a lot worse. I guess I just find it a little ridiculous to posh a title no matter how excellent it may be, just because of a nearly invisible thing.

Good luck with your case Jules.

These "bugs" only exist on "basic" and network channels. They don't exist on channels that people pay extra for, except for Playboy (which I've cancelled because of the "bug"). The premium channels know that they will lose subscribers if they add this crap to their channels.

Not true bill, I dont watch them all the time, but Starz network, Encore cinemplex and The movie channel for ones I know of, all atleast part of the time have a watermark on the station, I have several tivoed films I sat down to watch that had it for all or part of the film. HBO and cinemax also quite often run signup campaigns atleast on Directv where they have 20% of the bottom screen covered with a rolling ticker and number info to subscribe, and this during the movies.

Basic stations may be basic, but thier still pay channels, unless your stealing cable or have some kind of deal, thier not free network broadcasts. I know what your saying, but they still have to be paid for and put up with.

You could be right about Starz & Encore. I always though that these networks were a piece of shit (run by a company who the cable network equivalent of Leisure Time). I haven't had Starz or Encore since it was free when I initially got DirecTV. You could be right about TMC having a "part time" bug. I know it's not constant (it's not on either the east or west feeds right now).
They have those "freeviews" about two weekends a year. If it was a regular event, I would have problems with it too.
The point is, that I don't have to "put up" with it when I buy porn. As far as I'm concerned, as soon as a producer puts "graffiti" onto one of thier DVD's, it's "damaged goods".

you would think that 'most' people who participate in this forum know how rampant thievery is in the world of porno. grudging somebody for watermarking their product is pretty ridiculous since it's actually protecting the content that YOU like to see. not everyone in the porno game has the resources to keep getting ripped off and not have it derail their production ability. but stubborn is as stubborn does, and who am I to try and change some of the hard headedness that arises from time to time here at adt? exactly. I know that as consumers y'all expect a lot from us on the 'inside', and we DO try, but give a guy a break for trying to protect what's his own. lates, Von S.

I tend to agree with bill.
I hate logos because they usually end up covering some of the action depending on shots and camera angles.

I appreciate the problems the industry is having with piracy, though.
Ideally, rather than go for a low-tech solution that is cheap for you but hurts your consumers, maybe you should all pool your resources and look into getting invisible watermarks. You know, like all the audio watermarking and stuff that's being done over in the music industry, or song "fingerprinting".

That could take time. In the mean time, though, if you wnat to use a watermark, I suggest that:
1. It's really small and transparent
2. It appears for say, say, 30 seconds every 15-30 minutes. I don't think pirates will be able to remove if it's that frequent since the edit would be very obvious.

I Personally think Bill should start his Own Production Company, Put out $100,000.00's ++ of hard earned dollars and then watch the Video Pirates Steal His stuff and make money off of it. Some smaller Production companies do not have the money to go fight all the thieves running these web-sites. The watermark ( as most companies try to maintain ) is small and out of the way. If it help keep the cost down and Video Pirates away, I'm all for it. Maybe some of those people that refuse to buy videos with watermarks in them should put out some cash and help close down some of these illegal sites. Then I'll be the first to remove our watermark from our videos.

Don't get me wrong, I kinda agree, but as of now, the cost to copyprotect disks is out of most everyone's reach. "invisible" watermarks ( Digamark ) like we used for pictures were easy and affordable, but video is another story. Getting a license to use Macrovision - I would have to sell my house just to get the form :)

But for now .... we are all waiting for the copyright courts to catch up with Video Copyright like they did with Photo Stills. When that happens, you'll see the watermarks go away, but hell ... IT all about watching the SEX!!!!!! Enjoy it while you can - Watermark or not :)

Just an FYI for the newbies--

Here's a fun link for anyone who's interested in the whole contentious history of this topic. I would encourage people to read it so that we can avoid having the same discussion all over again...

As for my own opinion... eh... I think I posted somewhere in there...

Wow, just as usual ML always has a link handy! Without trying to repeat what was and has been said I figure I'll give my two cents. When it comes to copyright there is no safeguard. Even with a watermark people are still going to copy and share. With the "copyright" encryption on discs, the macrovision and so on, people are still going to copy discs. There's always a way to get equipment to do it and it is usually cheap. I am not a fan of the whole watermark or any kind of mark on a film/video/disc. I think it ruins the film and it can also damage plasma/lycos/lcd screen tv's which was mentioned earlier however I doubt anyone is going to be watching the same porn movie for hours and hours on end. The bottom line is if the company/director/or distributor wants to put something like a logo or what-have-you on their product that is their call. I personally will not buy such a product because it does distract me just like my old dlp did! I sympathize with companies who have to deal with these issues but again when I have to pay 20-30 dollars for a dvd I would like to have the picture free of any marks.

I am absolute agreement with Bill (once again!) on the watermarking issue. From a collector and consumer's point of view, I can't stand them and join in the protest and boycott. (And I am grateful to directors like Jules Jordan who had the integrity to remove them off his videos by popular demand.)

Hi,
I also understand the "problem" but a transparent logo is far more acceptable than a non transparent one. Maybe the idea of the girl wearing a piece of clothes with the company logo or a poster on the wall or another (non action disturbing) gadget that could present the companys name "within" the scene. Maybe some "green screen" video trick would do it.

I stoped buying Music CDs a while ago because of the copy-protection measures. I think i have the right to create mp3s of my personaly bought cds. I may be wrong ... but if that´s not gonna change (most likely will not) then i ain´t gonna buy any cds anymore. Same applies to "broadcast" flags in Tv shows. If they take away the abbility to record a show from any source for later enjoymend i say f*ck them ... they ain´t gonna get my money period

I still don't understand why companies think a watermark will stop pirates. From what I have seen on the internet it doesn't make a difference. There are a lot of pirates who post full scenes of every RLD movie for example but still mention the movie it's from.

Also, I think companies will even loose more money if fans decide not to buy a movie with a watermark so does it really help?

As I suggested to Nevaquit when Justin Slayer Productions initially put a watermark on their DVD's (which they subsequently removed), when shooting inside, the answer is as simple as hanging a picture containing the companies logo on the wall in the background.

It's cheaper than a watermark, it serves the same purpose as a watermark and it doesn't block anything on the screen.

For a bunch of "creative" people, the adult industry is pretty fucking uncreative when it comes time to solve problems without damaging their product.

As far as I'm concerned, for fear of pirates, producers are just sinking thier own ships.

Mandi,
Say there was a store that sells clothes that you really like. But that store has a problem with people bootlegging their product. They come up with a methodology to prevent copying of their clothes that that methodology, but it physically damages the quality of every piece of clothing that they sell to legitimate customers.

The damage that the methodology causes is relatively minor, but it's something that detracts from why you like the clothes in that store in the first place. The store down the street sells very similar clothes and doesn't do anything to damage their product. You've never stolen anything in your life and feel that the first store is punishing their good customers.

Where are you buying your clothes? I'm going to the second store. I don't know why it should be any different when it comes to porn.

to mandi; thanx, and to bill; i'll try and hold a piece of paper that says 'official watermark' at the beginning of every scene that I shoot from now on, but for no longer than 10 seconds so that the scene isnt destroyed. if that doesnt cut it, then I guess I wont be getting any $1.00 royalties out of your pocket anytime soon. which is totally cool since it's all about freedom of choice. lates, Von S.

I understand that piracy is a huge problem right now for adult film makers, along with mainstream film makers, the music industry, etc. But like Bill, when I get a watermarked DVD, I feel like I am getting a damaged product. I buy DVDs so I get get the best picture and sound available for the product. I haven't purchased any VXP discs due to the fact that I read that at least one is watermarked. I'm not boycotting them, I'm just waiting till I find out which ones are and which ones aren't watermarked so I can pick up the ones that aren't. Like Bill, I think that the customer is paying, through having the watermark on the disc, for the actions of people who will not be customers and are just stealing the product. I don't download movies through file sharing sites or from pay sites. An example, mainstream not porn, but The A-Team is getting released in June on DVD. I have all the episodes on tape off TV Land and TNT. I'm planning on buying the discs because the episodes all have the bug on them. If I didn't mind the bug, I'd stick to the tapes I have and not buy the discs.
On another note on the same subject, when I review a watermarked DVD, I always comment on the watermark and how obtrusive it is/isn't in the review, so potential buyers know about it. But when I grade the disc, I don't bring into account the watermark. This is due to the fact that some viewers care about it and others don't. From my comments about the watermark, those viewers who care about it can make a decision about the disc and those who don't still have accurate grades for the film/disc.

There's so much quality porn being released these days, that I only have time and money for a small percentage of it. That's why if the biz went all condoms tomorrow, I'd still have years of quality porn I could buy, before having to deal with the condom issue.

It's the same with water marks. I really don't care if half the biz adopts them, because that still leaves more porn that I can possibly watch anyway.

Instead of watermarks the adult companies should protect their DVD's better so they can't be ripped into clips.

I agree with Bill.
Leave the people who actually buy your products alone.
Without them, no sales, no DVDs, no deals.

I'm happy to hear that some companies had good results from the watermarks, even in the courtroom.
That was at your customer's expenses, don't forget.

Copy protection? When did that ever work?
They are usually easy to break and only cause grief for the regular (non-pirate) consumer.
The only CD protection schemes that were even moderately successful (and that only temporarily) caused the CD to be unplayable on some standard compliant CD players.

I won't touch a copy protected CD, ever , as I have no way of knowing whether it will play in all my players.

In that case I hope for the company owner sakes Blue Laser Disc will have a better copy protection so no company will have to use watermarks in order to protect their movies.

I mean using watermarks is like punishing people like us who BUY the DVD's.

Quite.
Really?
The visible watermarks that some of us are complaining about here of course won't have any effect on playback compatibility or standard compliance.

If you mean the 'invisible' digital watermarks, I would think that they would be introduced into the picture during encoding and also not affect compliance.
But I wouldn't expect those watermarks to survive the recompression that the pirate streams undergo and thus be somewhat pointless.
I may well be wrong though. I'm only guessing.

So in conclusion I guess the saying "You can please some of the people some of the times, and some people all of the times, but you can't please all people all of the time" is alive and well with this topic.

I will say after reading the post from last year, we will re-evaluate using watermarks. I guess some of us should be flattered with people ripping off our product, but it sure doesn't help us come up with the money to pay our bills or pay for advertising space here at ADT.

But You guys talking about buying "Damaged Goods" are really off topic here. We spend a great deal of time trying to produce the best product we can, and a watermark sure doesn't damage anything - any more then a girl wearing a production company t-shit, or a sign with the company's name hanging on the wall ( hahah . I really thought that was funny ) If some "Anti Watermark" folks really practiced what you preach, you would be walking around naked ( can't have any cloths with labels can we), won't be driving a car if it says FORD or CHEVY, nor watching TV - DAMN! why not bitch at equipment manufactures for putting their logo on their product?? With all that is being said, some of you should be living in a "Un-Marked Grave" :) drinking water out of a paper cup ----- OH WAIT! It has "DIXIE" printed at the bottom ... Can't buy those either.

( sorry .. I just couldn't help acting like a smart ass )

I would have to disagree there.
Funny perhaps. But would it work to protect your content?
In gonzo porn I personally wouldn't mind a logo hanging on the wall. Hell you could even have the performers going at it on a blanket with your logo on it for all I care.
No one was complaining about advertising, and neither of your examples impair the functionality of the object in question.
Visible watermarks in a movie obscure (or at least potentially distract) IMHO.
Piracy hurts you personally and immediately so it's only natural you have strong feelings on the subject.

To Kperv: it was just a joke.

To Mandi*: it's not that is that important to me, after all.
But the point is that you shouldn't fight piracy at the customer's expenses.
You should encourage people like us to buy more of your products and not use us to fight the people that rip you off.

The logo shirts that the girls in the two DVD's that I bought from your company aren't the least bit distracting. They are a part of the scene and then fit it.

A picture on the wall wouldn't be any more distracting than any other picture that would be on the same wall. It's behind the action and doesn't block anything.

A watermark, on the other hand, is completely out of place. Unlike a picture, it's in front of the action and it's distracting.

Kperv is correct. Logos on the equipment are more the equivalent of the label on the physical DVD rather than something that actually impairs the proper usage of that product. A more appropriate analogy would be if my DVD player always displayed a "Panasonic" logo on the screen when it is in use. On the other side of the screen would be the "Toshiba" logo that the TV generates. At the same time, my speakers would be repetedly chanting "M&K" at a low volume intertwined by my receiver whispering "Denon" over and over.

Labels are not the problem. It's the inappropriate usage of those labels so that they interfere with the proper functionality of the product that they are labeling.

ok billy, this post is a bit self indulgent and somewhat away from the rest of the thread. I'd like to pose one last question; watermark or no, what do you think of YRM#5? so far you've been able to go into great detail about the impact that the ghost image has had on yourself, but how about the sex, prod. value, talent level, etc. where does all of that rate? talk to you soon, Von S.

I also hate watermarks. Imagine buying "The Godfather" with a PARAMOUNT watermark on the sceen; or the "Star Wars" trilogy with 20TH CENTURY FOX logo plastered to the sceen. That would suck.

I fast forwarded through most of it as I didn't have a lot of time to watch it. I thought a few of the girls were pretty hot (which is why I bought it in the first place). I watched the last scene, featuring Chelsea, which I would have enjoyed had it not been for the watermark.

It's not likely that I will be loading this disc into one of my mega-changers. It will probably go into a CD binder along with other discs that I wish I hadn't bought in the first place.

FWIW, the only disc that has been good enough for me to overlook a watermark and watch more than once is "Once You Go Black...You Never Go Back 1" from Jules Jordan.

I am a DB programmer in another life, and I have copyrights on a couple of different applications that I've written.

I go to great pains to insure the integrity of my proprietary software, and my customer is effected in the sense that the entire pay structure is based on licensing fees, along with a one time installation charge. There is also an extensive password structure that must be reactivated twice a year. This is an easy process that can be done over the modem in about five minutes, so I don't get many complaints.

I know nothing about film, video, DVD production or anything else about making porn(well, I do fuck) so I can't speak to what can or cannot be done to battle copyright infringment in that industry. I do support their right to protect their product.

I also support the customers right to complain, and then the industry might or might not adjust their systems accordingly, depending on their bottom line.

That said, there is also just the plain old fashioned desire to create a great product that your customer will enjoy. I know that the porn directors I watch are very concerned with this because they obviously put allot of themselves into their product.

Intellectual property thieves are some of the worst kind of thieves precisely because there is the idea from some that it is an okay type of theft. But it does hurt the little guy, even in large companies. Shit trickles down, and I'm sure we would all hate to think our beloved starlet is making even less for a DP.<---That was a joke.

Anyway, I feel silly because I have purchased MANY porn DVD's in the past two months, and I haven't noticed a single watermark.

I'm gonna go look!

There are very few out there from the larger companies. Jules Jordan and Justin Slayer did it with a few of thier DVD's and then stopped. I'm pretty sure that Sean Michaels also did it on a few discs. Max Hardcore may still be doing it.

There are probably more Internet based companies doing watermarks than there are from companies where their primary business is VHS/DVD.

Ahhh, okay. That explains it. But it was a good excuse to pop in some titles I haven't seen in a while.

PL, thanx a million bro, those scenes W/Jessica and Meadow were my first two for Vince and RLD so I was pretty nervous about both efforts. and anyone out there reading this I gotta say that PL has an eagle eye for spotting the sunburn on Jessica's ass, I was hoping it didnt show that much, (lol). was flattered to see the 8.0 rating, thanx again and all regards, Von S.
