Ok, last weekend I spent some time trying to find some great adult dvds for my wife and I to enjoy. While reading reviews I took the advice of someone who highly recommended foreign films over the US releases, saying that they had better production value, nicer looking couples, and better sex. After reading lots of reviews, we ordered a couple of Private dvds: "The Fugative" and "Tatiana".
My wife and I watched both last night and neither movie did it for us. I suppose in a way we are lucky, since we both agree on the reasons why we didn't like them:
1) the women are too "done", or "made up". They look like second rate supermodels. Neither of us cared much for any of the women in either movie.
2) We listened to the French "original" audio tracks (although they still sounded dubbed, although their lips mostly synced up. So, we're going to avoid non-english movies from here on out. However, what really bothered us were the horribly fake sounding dubbed moans and groans.
3) The sex was just too fast and furious.... no foreplay, no taking their time. This just isn't the way real people have sex (well, from our perspecitive anyways) -- we're really looking for something where the couples show more of a connection, either emotionally, or perhaps even showing some vulnerability, instead of the instant "hard action" that always seems to occur.
4) before we bought Tatiana, the idea of a period piece was intriguing. After watching it, I don't care for it. I'd rather get 'em naked, lose the clothes.
Ok, so we learned a lot of things. I think primary for me is how the girl looks: I think I like fresh and real, not make up. I don't want a stripper, I'd rather see someone who looks a bit more like an everyday person. My wife's main point (and I agree) is about the character's connecting. The fast-action fuck 'em hard and violently stuff doesn't do it for us. Maybe it would be better if they worked their way into it. Not sure on that.
At the same time I know that we aren't interested in soft-core. Seen plenty of that on Showtime, completely bores us (Red Shoe Diaries, for example).
One thing that I see in a lot of reviews is something to the effect of "the girls or GORGEOUS in this one!". I don't think I like gorgeous. Supermodels are gorgeous. I like cute and pretty. In a similiar manner, my wife doesn't like slimey (Ron Jeremy - though he is funny as hell) or the overly-macho asshole.
Oh, one last piece of info: we've both seen lots of old 70's porn when we were younger (we're in our mid 30s now). We both agree that most of the old "classics" really doesn't do it for us. The old Debbie Does Dallas with the 70s hairstyles isn't what we are looking for as a turn-on today.
I hope this makes sense. I don't know if anyone here holds the same values as us and knows of something that we might like. We'd most certainly like to hear your opinions and recommendations!

p.s. I had also ordered Private Millenium but it didnt come in the package (they were backordered). I'm hoping that of the 25 scenes that we will like something. I can then come back to you all here and tell you which of the 25 we liked, maybe that would give more useful info than all these paragraphs!!

Welcome to ADT, holden!
You make some very good observations about Private productions. Although I definitely think the production value of Private films is much higher than nearly all porn made today, the content is definitely not for everyone--not "couples" oriented in my mind.
The casts are generally European, predominately Czech and Hungarian. That explains a lot about the "look" of the performers as well as the dubbing. Pretty much any video using "Eurobabes" is going to have talent with similar looks--very pretty but somehow forced and artificial. The dubbing is more of a language barrier thing--usually Private uses such an international cast that there's no common language (such as French or English) that they all speak well, so it's shot in the native languages of the perfomers and later dubbed in the major languages. I don't know why Private insists on dubbing the moaning and groaning, but they do.
Unfortunately, what you've seen is pretty representative of what Private's all about. Millenium will give you a more complete picture, and maybe you'll find something there that interests you both, but based on your comments, I don't think you will. Either you like Private's style, or you don't.
As far as recommendations, based on your criteria, we're talking about a very short list. Everyday person + emotional connection + sex w/ foreplay - cable-like porn - classic era films = very hard to find.
Off the top of my head, I'd say that Justine: Nothing to Hide 2 (Metro), starring Mike Horner and Roxanne Blaze probably fits the bill best. Maybe Bliss (VCA), but I didn't care for the depressing storyline or the sex that much, however, I seem to be in the minority there. Maybe Seven Deadly Sins (Vivid) or Search for the Snow Leopard (Ultimate) -- they are better examples of more couple's oriented stuff from U.S. studios.
I got the feeling that you weren't looking for all-sex or gonzo porn (stuff without a movie-style plot) but those are more likely to feature "everyday" people and more "real" sex than the studio-produced features. If you're interested in looking into this genre, we can offer some suggestions in that area.
I wish I could be more help, but you've managed to describe a set of interests that many people have but that the porn industry doesn't produce a lot of. Although you'd think that they would try to capitalize on your demographic, it's pretty difficult to find the combination of good sex, fresh people, and decent plot in porn.

I went over to dvdempire to look at the screenshots of Justine, and this one looks very promising. Thanks! I'll give 'er a try.
And to answer your question, I'm not so sure how much plot matters, so if there are gonzo films out that you feel might fit some of the other criteria I'd love to hear your recommendations!

Holden, I share you pain Unfortunately, the vast majority of porn is exactly what you describe... fake looking made-up women with fake boobs, puffed up lips, liposuction, scars, tattoos, etc. and men that look like ex-cons fucking like mad under a barrage or white lights with little or no foreplay. In a lot of porn, the scenes don't even start with their clothes on! Very mecahnical. Not very sensual. Not very real. I guess there are two reasons for that... much porn is just jerk-off foder and guys want to cut to the chase and for "porn stars" (i.e. people who appear in lots of movies), sex is just a job!
Anyway, so basically you want...
1. Normal people. Fresh. Attractive.
2. Fore-play. Emotional connection.
3. Hard-core.
In other words... "REAL" sex!
That's a difficult combintation to find. Here's some stuff that I have found that I like which might help you in your search...
1. Ben Dover (British) - Ben makes gonzo stuff so it's basically wall-to-wall sex without a plot. However, if I understand you correctly, you don't necessarily want a plot... it's just that plot driven movies tend to have bigger budgets and thus better looking people and... since they are story driven... perhaps more foreplay. In other words, you don't so much want plot as reality. Ben's videos are very real looking. He uses nothing but normal looking people... some very attractive, some ugly... but few if any porn stars! Many of the girls have never been in another movie before. So, although it's still hardcore, there's a tangible feeling of reality in his videos. Reality is what does it for me... not boob jobs and robo-babes. I really hate the American barbie doll "porn star". Boob jobs simply disgust me. I would rather see a natural female with an A-cup than someone buthered into looking like a barbie doll. Another thing that does it for me with Ben's stuff is that he's a nice guy... very funny and charming. Also, almost every one of his videos has a scene where he supposedly seduces someone he meets somewhere. I don't know if it's real or acted, but what it adds up to is a lot of foreplay in those scenes. There are only three titles out on DVD right now though and they are still hard to find. He has tons of stuff on VHS though. If you want to give one a try, I would highly suggest "Lewd In Liverpool" on VHS. There's a scene in there with an absolutely beautiful women they supposedly meet and seduce in an auto garage that is just amazing. There's no actual penetration until well into the scene... like maybe 15 minutes or so. They really build up to it slowly. The scene is simply incredible. Ben's movies are a mixed bag though. I *love* the seduction scenes... but he also has "cut to the chase" scenes and the odd porn star... complete with boob job. Overall though, you will find mostly fresh, young, natural women in realistic situations.
2. Justine - Nothing to Hide II - I just bought a number of titles including this one. I sampled the first 20 minutes or so though and it seems pretty amazing. There's a real plot that drives everything. The plot is not just a device to move from one scene to the next... it's woven throughout. And the sex is very real. The first few scenes I saw didn't even end with your obligatory cum-shot... they were just people fucking around. In the father's first scene... he can't even get it up!!!! Normally that's a bad thing in porn, but here, it's part of the story! Very cool. I think I will watch it tonight.
3. Barely Legal 1 - Another title I just bought. This DVD has by far the freshest, most beautiful young women I have ever seen in any adult video anywhere! These women make the women in Real Sex Mag 18 (often recommended here) look haggared by comparison! Only one woman in the entire movie has done other movies... Anastasia. There's foreplay in most cases and the photography is simply amazing. Do you ever find that magazines or adult video box covers have beautiful looking young women on them but then the video itself looks like American's Funniest Home Videos!? Well, in this video, the video looks just like the pictures in the magazines or box covers. It should... it's directed by a photographer for Hustler! Every shot is simply beautiful and the girls are just amazing. They all start with their clothes on too... and unlike a lot of the porn stars... these girls actually wear underwear. Also, every shot is meticulously planned so that the women look their best. Most directors just let the actors go at it and then leave everything up to the cameraman... but what you end up with is really poor quality shots, ugly angles and uneven lighting. He plans every scene like he would plan a still photo. Another great thing about the video is that most of it is shot outdoors in full sun. Outdoor scenes really open up a movie. A few warnings... there is some peeing in the movie but *not* golden showers (yech). For instance, in one scene there's a young couple messing around in the back of a limo and the girl tells the driver to pull over because she needs to pee... she heads over to a field beside the road and... well... lifts here skirt and pees in the grass! It's not gross. I think it just adds realism. Whatever. I wouldn't let that stop you from buying it. Gaping assholes... now **THAT** is gross!!! The other common theme is a young girl fucking her "stepdad" or "stepbrother". I just found that kind of silly but it didn't really bother me because I knew it was fake. Anyway, I would highly recommend this title. You will not find better looking, better filmed beautiful young women anywhere else in hardcore!!

By the way... European porn has it's fair share of crap (IMHO) with really raunchy, baddly lit, wall-to-wall sex... although perhaps fewer boob jobs. There are no hard and fast rules unfortunately. You basically end up having to buy a lot of crap until you find a series, director or actress/actor that you really like. That said, I hope you find the suggestions here helpful. The problem is, in porn, everything sells... good or bad. In a sea of mediocrity, it can be difficult to find the real "gems". The one thing you should absolutely avoid in your search are compilations. They are almost always junk.

Takeo, thanks so much!! That's the second recommend for Justine, I think this is a must get.
You said that Ben Dover's material is hard to find on dvd - does that mean that it's not impossible? Any hints as to where to find 'em?
I'll also give the Barely Legal a shot, though I'll the title will probably put my wife off a bit
I promise to write back what my (and her) reactions are once we've given them a look-see.

Yah... the "Barely Legal" thing could be touchy :-)... but in reality most of the girls are probably in their twenties and the whole "stepdad" thing is just plain silly. The thing about this movie is that the girls are just so beautiful and it's shot so well. But the "young girl" premise is not exactly a couple thing As always, your milage may vary. Still... give it a try if you want to see some really beautiful non-porn-stars.
Another series with attractive girl next door types is Real Sex Magazine... but the production values are not nearly as high as the Hustler DVD.
Justine is a sure bet for a couple movie though. You wife should like that one... you both should actually!! Can't go wrong with that one. I really wish there were more stuff like Justin out there.
Ben Dover... as I say... is straight up gonzo... but the great thing is that they feature REAL people... not porn stars. And as I say, Ben is a pretty funny and likeable guy. I did an AltaVista search and found a site that was selling three titles on DVD... but I haven't seen any of them yet so I can't comment. Hopefully they will be more widely available on DVD soon. The "Amanda" scene in "Lewd In Liverpool" is great though... very easy to find on VHS. I bought mine from exxxplicit.com just because it's based in Canada.

I think the crux of the problem is that a lot of so called "couple" movies feature big name porn stars and big budgets... which should be a good thing, but in my experience it can make everything just so fake, contrived and well... dull! Even Bliss... which is highly recommended by most everyone... is wonderful to look at... amazingly well shot... but with the exception of a few scenes, the sex is kind of dull to me... and some of the boobs are fake. I like the Nikita scenes and the Chloe scene. Still... you should buy Bliss. Good couples movie. Gonzo stuff... like Ben Dover... is not couples oriented, it's plain old hardcore... but at least they have REAL people having real sex. So I guess there isn't really anything that completely fits your criteria. As I say, you kind of have to experiment a bit and a lot depends on your personal taste.
Actually... I just thought of something... there is a woman who makes a lot of porn geared more towards couples. I can't think of her name right now but I'm sure someone else here knows who I'm talking about.

I understand what you mean! Might I suggest a magazine ( or catalog ) called Adult Movie Directory. I bought one two years ago and what listed in it is adult movies, their ratings, summary of the plot, who stars, type of sex featured, and places where to order them. The magazine has a pretty good rating system, that if the editors hate the movie, they will say it so! You can by one in any adult bookstore or shop and should be able to find one.
This might help you find what you want. I hope this helps!
