Starting earlier this month, I've started to see gambling and mortgage scam URLs in our referal logs. These URL do not actually have links to comstockfilms.com. Is this evidence of infected client machines trying to access our site and getting offers for interest-only loans instead?

URLs include things like:

http://www.hbsnwa.org/online-casino.html
http://www.sigmapiscu.org/party-poker.html
http://www.hbsnwa.org/roulette.html
http://www.hbsnwa.org/online-gambling.html
http://www.sigmapiscu.org/texas-holdem.html
http://www.sigmapiscu.org/online-poker.html
http://www.epraha.info/blackjack.html
http://www.epraha.info/free-slots.html
http://www.epraha.info/roulette.html

Perhaps one of you who is more familar with things like spyware, adware and other PeeCee nonsense could explain what this might mean.

Thanks!

If an image on your server appears on another site it may come up in your stats as a referrer - when in reality they are just stealing your bandwidth.

Yes, I know that trick. MaxHardcore.com was stealing one of our movies for a few days a couples months back. Fixed our directory permissions and put a stop to that.

That does not seem to be the case with these URLs. I can't figure out what they're doing.

TC and Max! It sounds like one of those TV cop shows with the mismatched buddies and their crimesolving pet monkey.

I've seen these same referrers in our logs. Never really paid much attention to it though.

I remember reading something about it as one of the ways the unscrupulous try to up their google-ranking, by linking to popular sites and some other tricks with that. Ignore them, or if you feel nasty, block them.

I wonder if this is a sign of Google page jacking?

Don't feel bad. I've never jacked to the Google page, either.

Not sure, I read about it when it was in the news some time ago, but I have never really gone into the depths of search engine 'optimizing', I prefer to do it the old-fashioned way, which always works better in the long run.
Try googling "your choice" with or without quotes, with or without a space and see what comes up, no tricks just being around for a long time and being relevant.

And now they're gone.
