"Sorry I am not a "director" of some fake ass dialog or bullshit pyrotechnics, if thats what you consider directing, take your show on the other side of the hill. If you think directing is making a black dildo talk and dance around, I got news for ya!, "
In fairness, from the same interview, here are some other things he said about Jules. Also:So it's not like he was just in there ripping Jules. I think he was trying to make a point about the difference between gonzo and feature directing. You might disagree, and he might have worded it in a way that sounded hostile, but I don't think it was meant that way.
well, too bad some people are not good enough to shoot mainstream. so they shoot porn feature, and having "gonzo director" make them feel better because they don't feel at the bottom. my next movie i will put a blue and a red light in the back and shoot boring sex, then i'll call myself a feature director. manuel ferrara
As far as I'm concerned, directing means getting the performance you want out of the actors. Whether or not that includes dialogue is not the point, unless you plan on arguing that the silent era movies weren't directed.
I agree with Jules that he directs. I agree with Robby D that he has to worry about things Jules doesn't. So what's all the excitement about?
Very well said. I also have to agree with both sides. Jules and the good gonzo guys do direct, but (and I say this as a personal opinion without anything to back it up) I think a good portion of the gonzo field could do with a little of the knowledge that feature directors like Robby D., Michael Raven, and Bud Lee (just to pick three) have.

Tony, I agree. I think Robby's one of the current feature directors with the most potential out there right now. He understands the heat of a gonzo movie while also having the technical skill of a feature director.
Oh, and I also took Robby's "rips" on Jules as being some of his joking around. Watching him in some of DP's behind the scenes featurettes he can have a slightly abrasive sense of humor, and I don't think it translates that well to the written word.

Astro and Tony - somewhere in there, I think you two are agreeing.
And I agree too. With some exceptions, I think some of the better gonzo directors today are directors who have also had some success shooting features. And I think some of the better feature (and gonzo) directors had their starts as wonderfully nasty performers.
I agree with Jules in that he is as much a director of his movies as Michael Ninn is of his movies. Are there a lot less art direction / special effect issues for a gonzo director to deal with? Sure. But the end product is no less his vision.
And I also agree with Robby D that people who do something new open doors for others to follow.
Jules Jordan is the best director out there right now. He knows his audience better than any director I can think of. What is the purpose of porn? Who watches porn? What do we want to see in porn? Although the demographics are changing-porn's bread and butter will always be male perverts. We want hot women doing nasty things enthusiastically. Jules has the right amount of tease, pacing, angles, picture quality, he hires the right actors, and from what I've seen, never shoots filler. Love him or hate him you can see how much effort he puts into each scene.
I thought Buttman cracked the code when he ushered in the voyeuristic, no plot approach to porn. His focus was always on the sex, not creating some laughably bad, heat killing mainstream movie rip off. I thought he also disaproved the notion that gonzo directors weren't realy directors because they don't shoot storylines with The Fashionistas, which blows away anything Nic Andrews or Brad Armstrong have ever done.
Maybe Jules should do a feature just to shut up the detractors. Just buy a set of vampire teeth and a strobe light and call it Nocturnal Nut Busters or buy a blanket and go to the beach and film Anal Beach Party.
The sex in the Action Sports Sex series was hot but did anyone bother to watch the stupid action scenes in between? I know I didn't.
It's amazing how people confuse flashy art direction, sheer quantity of cuts, or post-production FX with the craft directing or editing. I blame MTV and FCP.
I'm pretty sure I lauded J.S.'s revolution -- in actual print -- before anybody here, but if there were absolutely no use for more traditional storyline hardcore erotica, it wouldn't be produced anymore. SOMEBODY obviously likes & consumes it, if not the majority of raincoaters here. Yes. the vast majority of what's being produced in that arena is laughable, as is the vast majority of gonzo. More useless gonzo gets venerated than useless features because the form doesn't require as much effort or imagination from the director ("auteur:") to fulfill the definition of the genre.
There are mediocrities & coasters on both sides of the fence. Someone who shoots six or seven separate, unrelated scenes in a day of shooting is likely not creating something special, whether it's gonzo or feature.
Everybody goes blah blah blah about the lack of innovation & new ideas in porn but then when you ask what they've been watching/renting they name the same 2 or 3 directors/brands & claim their time/budget doesn't allow them to "experiment." Which is fine & understandable, but then shut up your whining about wanting to taste something different & eat the hamburger & fries you bought again.
Directors are even easier to poke into amusing connipitions than performers because not only are our egos huge but we tend to be able to express it more colorfully than those whose careers are based on gymnastics and penis length/anal capacity.
As for Jules, buddy, you give new meaning to the term "poor winner." You have achieved everything you set out to do, to great popular & financial success. Countless awards, huge sales, great financial returns, your place in the history of porn assured ten times over ... Why so thin-skinned? You didn't invent gonzo. You didn't invent the styles sold in the shops on Hollywood Boulevard where actresses & directors alike have been buying slutwear to feature in videos for decades. You didn't invent bathroom gloryholes, & you didn't invent the heat between certain performers (you know what I mean here).
You came up with your own takes on all of the above & more, & did it with an energy & craft & intelligence that has met with unprecedented critical & fan success. So why must you trip, wigga?
Nobody is going to topple you from your throne. Nobody is even trying, man. You should be flattered that you're the 2,000-pound gorilla that it seems comes up in everybody else's interviews. I'm sure Robby D wouldn't mind being that gorilla; hell, I wouldn't mind being that gorilla-- as long as it didn't involve spending any time confecting "spermsicles" that I'd rather spend, oh, smelling the roses, enjoying a sunset, watching a foreign movie, etc ... which is one reason why I don't get to be you. But I'm okay with that. You are the man. Be the man. Show some graciousness & class, thereby continuing to set an example for the rest of us.
at the end of the day it doesnt matter how many special effects you use,how exotic your location is,how well written your script is,or how big your budget is.......you are and should always be a perverted pornographer first and formost.
The important difference is it's entirely possible to make a fully realized gonzo video, one in which everyone involved was paid a living wage for their contribution, for $50K. Who knows, maybe shrewd producer could do it for even less. That kind of budget gives you the possiblity of an economically sustainable endevour that doesn't really on cheating anyone, not performers, not crew, and most importantly, not the audience.
The only way to make a feature for $50K is to either make a film that is laughably thin (which, even if they'll tolerate it in exchange for seeing hardcore sex, short-changes and belittles the audience); or to use the guerilla (gorilla?) business model which askes people to work for the greater glory of the production. The guerilla approach might work once, or even twice. But there's a limit to how many times people can work on a movie for substandard (or non-existant) wages. This is doubly so when asking people to work on a porn movie – you can't even brag about it to most people, let alone put it on your reel.
For what it's worth I think I lie somewhere between the two...A few things I believe.
Directing features is different from directing all-sex movies.
Some all-sex directors don't do a whole more than pointing a camera at sex. Some of them don't even hold a camera and have little if any say over what gets shot.
Jules Jordan is as good as anyone at what he does. If someone doesn't want to call it "directing" then come up with a new title. "Creator" maybe...I'm fine with director because that is what it is.
I think everyone knows what I think about Jules' work. If they don't they should take a look at the history of the Rog Reviews awards.
Hey at least this little battle is keeping a Tony T Vs. Rog round 2 from popping up.
Said better than I could have ever hoped to say it. On point, as always, dac. There are times (note: I said "times", Jules) where I totally expect to look up the word "paranoid" in the dictionary and expect to see Jules' face. That's not a slam on the man by any stretch of the imagination, it's just that sometimes the paranoia can seem a little far-fetched and most of all, unwarranted.
$50K budget for a gonzo? What planet are you on there, Tony? Studios are looking for people to bring in gonzos on production budgets from $6K to $15k these days, with no more than an additional $1000 to $4000 on post.

I haven't seen any of Robby D's stuff since Beat the Devil, which I watched for obvious reasons (read: Jesse Jane b/g). I wasn't too impressed, but apparently some people liked it.
That won't be enough. You also need a cheesy rock music soundtrack to drench any sounds from the performers during the sex scenes.
I think it is possible to make a seriously good feature on a smaller budget, Justin and I did it with Bella Loves Jenna. But I guess it is easier for us since I don't get my base rate and he edits and shoots and performs, so that takes some ample cost away.
While I'm sure it's tremdously helpful in both controling costs and ensuring returns, precious few of us can count on having porn's number one star work on spec. as a factor in our creative approach or business model.
Jules Jordan is the greatest porn director, period. Robbie D. movies suck big time, a waste of great talents, he's only a wannabe "artist" and his silly tricks to make originals movies make me laugh, but not because they are funny, but because they are pathetics.
If i wanna see some artistic movie i watch Kubrick or Coppola, if i wanna see some REAL porn i pick up Jules Jordan or Rocco or Joey Silvera. All those wannabe porn "artists" who try to be original and artistics putting some fogs and lame lights and stupid music inside a porn are totally useless.
Ok, they have theirs audience, but also most of worst hollywood movies got theirs audience, but is nothing to brag about it or be called "art" or "original".
JJ has his reason to be pissed off, that envious ppl should stfu and dont dare to criticize the King, expecially from an artistic point of view.
Well i wouldnt say Jules is paranoid, All he's doing is defending his name. You can't go around slinging names and and not expect an equally venomous response. Imagine this: Your at work, Giving it 110% and one of your peers says your a halfass worker, wouldnt you be offended too. Thats just my 2 cents.
If Robby did nothing but shit that nobody liked I doubt DP would have him under contract. There's a difference between "I don't like this" or "This isn't my style" and "This is a piece of shit that isn't fit for human consumption".

Well, I guess you have to have an understanding of the relationship between myself and robby d over the years that you guys arent privy to, this guy caused me to sleep on my apartment floor for an extra month when I came to porn valley,( but I am happy for that now actually). He has proven to be a shill and mediator for a company that I despise greatly for their ruthless business tactics, I'm sure he will be a victim eventually. His compliments are patronizing words. He "hated" my work years ago,so he told his bosses at the time, but is now obviously (teen america) influenced, i'm not the only one that has noticed this, numerous emails and reviews also point this out.
DAC, I never claimed to invent the wheel, I just refined and sharpened it ;) the way it seemed best in my perverted mind. Trust me there is a difference between an "influence" and a "rip-off"
I give props to features that mix hardcore elements into their productions ie Fashionistas, Club Jenna , who wouldnt want to see Jenna fist Bella? Jenna may get slag from some strokers, but I know one of the greatest things i've ever seen in porn is Jenna giving a blow job.
I may seem outspoken at times but its only to defend what i've created, hopefully that fire will never die.....
Just watch Lip Service and see those pretty eyes of Jenna's staring up. Call it slavering fanboy or whatever. This girl has been turning me on for almost ten years and I look forward to her continuing to do so. She is beautiful, smart, and a heck of a business woman!
I love Jules' work, but he does get too defensive sometimes over the little comments some people may make. What about all the compliments he gets?? That sure as hell makes up for the very few negative stuff he has gotten.
But this doesn't change the fact that his stuff kicks ass. Jules can't wait for Ass Worship 7 next month!!
I think that there's a lot of directors out there who are still old school..I don't want to get to deep about this but gonzo is the perfect example of post modern porn. Jules has a good eye and sets up some amazing shots and scenes. Plus i feel he's still experimenting with it. I must admit im not familiar with Robby D's work...but i guess the fact that im not speaks for itself. The great thing about this is that when a director raises the bar...their contempories have to work harder...and who benefits? us!

I'll agree with that too!
In my experience, I could get 100 glowing compliements in a row, and it's that next scathingly negative comment that is the one that sticks with you. I was really sensitive (still am), and there was nothing I could do at the time to change how much it bothered me that there were people who could be so mean.
I dunno what the cat clawing going on between Robby D and Jules Jordan is all about or what started it but it's freakin' lame.
Jules writes: "Let me state that I am a true director, I in fact select/book the talent used in my productions, select/book the locations, supply and pick the wardrobe/toys, I direct my camera angles, assemble lighting, shoot my own camera, instruct performers with what to do/say/react etc. come up with the concept (directing?), shoot stills, edit the final product, screen the final product."
When I hear porn directors say shit like that I shake my head and think, "These guys don't have a fuckin' clue what directing (in its traditional sense) is all about"
Here's where Jules goes wrong-- he goes wrong with the first shit out of his mouth, i.e., when he says, "Let me state that I am a true director."
Had Jules said, "I am a true PORN director," I would 100% agree. But director? Make that movie director? In its purest sense? Nigger please.
Out of all the things Jules listed that supposedly makes him a "true director," only one... ONLY ONE THING he said is part of the usual and customary job of a true director: "I direct my camera angles."
That's it. Everything else--in mainstream that is--is part of other peoples' jobs.
I'm not writing this to bag on Jules. I'm only trying to put into perspective the job of "director." Ya see, the job of "director" and the job of "porn director" are two different animals.
Why?
Easy-- Money.
In porn, there's rarely enough money to hire people to do the jobs that producers, casting directors, writers, location managers, directors of photography, and a host of others perform. You see, in porn the director is often all of the above. (and certainly many of the above and more.)
So Jules: Chill out, man. You're a true director, albeit a true PORN DIRECTOR. And RobbyD--ditto for you, bro. Just be happy the checks you guys get are good.
Can't we all just get along and not worry about this trivial, egotistical shit? It makes us all look like bigger retards and wannabees than most of the world already thinks we are.
jules wrote: "He has proven to be a shill and mediator for a company that I despise greatly for their ruthless business tactics, I'm sure he will be a victim eventually."
i'm neither a shill nor a mediator for the company you're refering to, but if doing things like enforcing contracts (for example, contract with performers) are "ruthless business tactics" i think we need to re-define the word "ruthless."

A director doesn't direct his actors??
While lots of the stuff mentioned by Jules is part of other peoples' jobs, many of those aspects are also partly under the control of the director. Ideally. Even contract directors in the classical studio era had some control on the scripts with which they (had to) work, on art direction and set decoration, on lighting and even on editing, even if it was only through the practice of 'editing-in-the-camera'. Also, the Hollywood mode of production isn't the only way mainstream cinema is made.
In the end you are right though, the discussion in this thread is freakin' lame.
