Ed Powers brought made Randy West a Nasty Brother after Jamie Gillis stoppped being one. The way I see things; Ed Powers created the pro-am genre and nobody else. He deserves a lot more respect for that eventhough I don't respect his condom-only policy but I digress.
He has my respect for creating the genre, and would get more if he left it (or at least kept himself out of the sex scenes). The again I haven't watched one since volume 200 something, so maybe they have gotten better.
Ed came first. And, I also liked Ed's early stuff, mainly because he had new girls in every volume of his films, when the other companies were just recycling girls at that time. But nowadays, almost every company can get new girls in their films.
I've been really liking their stuff lately. The condom blowjob is lame though. I dont mind Ed Powers in the scenes because its fun to see the girls reaction to a weird fat nasty old guy.
I don't know that Ed Powers created the pro-am genre. There were some other lines out there about that time. He did help popularize it with mainstream porn viewers though That is an often overlooked aspect with anything. Successful marketing is not as easy as it appears. He certainly defined the talky-interviewing type gonzo. LBO had some lines where they talked a bit.
He may not be an Adonis but he's also not as bad as that.
I haven't watched his stuff lately and I agree with many of the complaints about his work, but in the first six or seven years of Dirty Debs he captured many great moments and a few really great moments. If he had refined the formula aand put quality over sheer quantity of volumes I might have stayed with the series.
I'd still like to see the Cockless with Mia Fox and hope it comes out on DVD.
I seem to remember seeing Ed Powers directorial stuff before that of Randy West. And as I've mentioned before, despite their skeeziness, guys like Ed Powers, Rodney Moore, Max Hardcore, Dave Hardman and other porn curiosities like them, gave a lot of girls their starts and they have a legitimate place in porn history.
I wasn't that big a fan of Ed Powers, and what I think of Randy West is made crystal clear, HERE.
Even though I got no use for West, I will forever be in his debt for 1994's "Up N Cummers Vol. 11". While most associate that edition with a young, budding J.J. , for me, that flick was my initial exposure to the magnificent Krysti Lynn. Even though Powers had done her previously in "Dirty Debutantes Vol 7". The West flick was where I saw her first.
If you say "invented" referred to american market then I believe Ed Powers , but the genre is available in Europe since the 90's especially German's Dorian mcGray productions such some Casting movies or so called Reports or Reality and so And same thing did Riccardo Schicchi in early 90's his ex wife and ex pornstar Eva Henger did it even with males casting and trying them of course condom only
Of course my memory may fail, I'm not a fan of that kind of movies
Edit I've to say another thing by knowing the right people here are available lots of real homemade videocassettes

Dirty Debutantes first volume came out in 1989. Bus Stop Tales (Ed Powers' first series) would have been even earlier. Unless there's something earlier (and I don't think there is) he pioneered the genre. I'm not saying you have to like him, but it's just a fact.
BTW, when you say "West or Powers - who came first", Randy West was performing long before Powers appeared on the scene. IIRC, West is part of the Gillis generation of male performers who've been around since at least the 70s.
Then he's the first , but as said I saw lots of titles around but rarely picked 'em up being not a fan of that kind of movies with exceptions one of them was a dirty debutantes series borrowed from a friend Aurora Snow was in there I believe one of her very first scenes she impressed me a lot , I like her since then.
