I've got a 500 GB Western Digital My Book External HD that I've talked about on here before. When I dl stuff it goes to the 'My Book' but when I go back to retrieve the stuff later, I can't find it. If i go to the 'My Book' icon on my Mac which represents my Ext HD it will only have some of the stuff that I've dl'd on it. If I want to find some stuff i have to go back and trace the dl path of the file and it'll pull the files up but in a whole other 'My Book1' on the Finder. The ONLY way I can get to the 'My Book1' is to go trace the file paths...I can't open it in Finder when I open up the My Book and it has the My Book 1 under the MacHD > Volumes > My Book. But when I go to MacHD in Finder, "Volumes" doesn't even come up.
Is there something I need to do to just put all the files under one folder or whatever on the Ext HD? It's a bitch to go through 2 or 3 extra steps to open up a file when some of them came just be opened by opening the Ext HD icon. Do I need to reformat it or did I fuck up in formatting it in the first place? I used it on a PC but it's on a Mac now but it seems pretty random as to what new stuff I dl gets put into which 'My Book'. It's a pain in the ass more than anything but does anyone have any ideas or anything? Hopefully my problem was explained well enough. If not, let me know and I'll do my best to clarify. Thanks.

#1 You can't re-format the drive without losing everything that is currently on it. You will need to save the files from it first.
#2 Your Mac can read a PC-formatted disk, but, typically, unless you have installed special software on your PC, a PC will not read and/or write to a Mac-formatted disk.
So, if you need to use the drive on both operating systems, I would recommend formatting it for a PC.
Perhaps a FAT format (vs. an NTFS format) would be the most compatible?
It's been a long time since I've formatted anything from a Mac, but a Mac could format hard-drives and disks for PCs as well as Macs. The drive set-up utility that came standard with the Mac OS would also allow you to create partitions when you set-up a hard-drive. I wonder if you could create Mac and PC partitions (formatting from a Mac)?
The only external hard-drive I have ever had a problem with was my 500-GB My Book (and I have 10 external drives, six Western Digital and four WD hard-drives in generic USB enclosures).
