As a relative newbie to the internet, as well as to appreciating porn, I've been observing with part fascination, part disgust the antics, professional ethics ( or lack thereof ), and sometimes downright meaness of some of the major players in the porn industry ( certainly not all, but probably the lion's share ) .
It's no wonder so little has changed, or the industry rarely if ever has any positive controversy, when someone dares to speak up they are bullied, beaten down, and threatened with lawsuits . The basis of such litigation eludes me - slandering their good name perhaps? They might want think that one through before proceeding.
So, now I'm learning what a sham the AVN awards are as well. This is not to detract from anyone who has been nominated or has won an award - but I would think that even they would have to agree that such an award would be much more meaningful if the whole thing wasn't so obviously an exercise in back-scratching of the good-ole-fellas network.
Which brings me to the point of this post. Why not have our own (meaning ADT) awards bestowed on the truly worthy DVDs, maybe voted on by our illustrious and impartial reviewers? Sure, we're a relatively small group right now, but so what? Now, I don't mean having a big, costly awards show or anything, but something from ADT based solely on merit would not be viewed by anyone as insignificant, as they will not be based on how many advertising dollars were spent with any magazine.
And yes, I would absolutely expect derision, attempted smack-downs, even laughter from those who know that they don't rightly belong on the noms list, when more deserving works are ignored, and they know thatwe know what's going on. I say, let them laugh and the louder the better! This would be an example of positive controversy, and could possibly actually aid in elevating porn, which is what we all want, right?
I was astonished to hear Tina say that she had never won an award, and she is far more deserving than most. Hey Tina, maybe you should have done Fishbein, heh heh. But seriously, this is just another conspicuous example of omission.
So, I was interested to hear what y'all think. Am I being naive to think that it's do-able?

*the usual disclaimer - these are just my own opinions, blah blah blah

Smartblonde strikes again!

In a sense, everyone knows where my votes go (look at anything getting a 4 or better) for best dvd's. I'm all for it. What do you propose? Start with a best dvd, best scene, best actress and actor, best extra's, and most lovable member in the business(sure, I'm tailoring a niche for Tina-who cares?)?

Rog contacted us a few days ago and suggested that we do an awards program jointly between ADT and DVD Porn Reviews. It sounds like a good idea to me.

Steph/Drew,

I too am speaking up to say that I believe it would be a great idea.

You have already established a name for yourselves in the "biz" and I think that it would mean a lot to those performers/directors/writers/etc to receive a nomination/award.

Glad to hear Rog wants to as well, and most people so far are all for it, with the exception of VCArules (but I think you just like being ornery LOL :))
So, it would be interesting to hear everybody's ideas & then Drew, Steph & Rog work out the details.
Probably should have a maximum number of noms per category, heh heh!
And what categories would there be?
One thing I thought was, although just the reviewers should vote on most of the noms, to have one where the rest of us could vote on, like fan favorite or something.
I predict these will grow with prestige each year. These will be the ones that really count!

First, GO DREW!!!!!

Second, this is a great idea, as long as DivaX still gets nominated. I especially like the idea of doing it between Adult DVD Talk and DVD Porn Reviews.

yes - more feedback please

we've been talking to Rog about this for over a year. we really want it to be fair and have the awards encompass more than a few people's opinions. it's difficult because we've all seen a select number of dvds (though rog has seen more than most humans :) but i think we can put together a committee of well rounded dvd watchers.

i have some ideas for how to run an online 'ceremony' - but that's really the least complex issue of them all (fun to think about anyway :)

Drew: yeah!

Steph: "well rounded"?!? Oh boy, she means me! ;) (as I look to my well rounded body)

I volunteer my services. I can be fair and impartial. Would it be best to have the members nominate titles and then have the committee chose from that list or would you prefer to have the company's nominate the best they made that year (providing ample review copies for the committee) and have us vote?

I like the idea of fan favorites too. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

I like the idea of us giving out some awards. I've been watching people have sex for quite awhile, and it's high time I started giving back. Just as my New Year's resolution will be to stop making masturbation such a selfish act, I feel it is incumbent upon all of us to reward good looking people who let us watch them do it, and those who bring them to us on DVD. I also like the idea of the joint effort with Rog's site. It's nice, for a change, to see people in the same business getting along.

As for the categories, methods for choosing winners, and ways of letting those winners know they did good, I don't have any real suggestions at this point, though I probably will sometime later. My only request is that there be no opening dance number, no Billy Crystal cracking wise to the orchestra pit, and under no circumstances would I feel comfortable with the presence of Whoopi Goldberg.

These are my reasons why this is so stupid:

1.No statues will be given.
2.No Porn Stars will ever accept a award from a dinky website.
3.This really doesn't mean anything, AVN does.
4.Whoever thought of this idea should have their head examined.

1. Are you certain that no 'statues' will be given out or is that simply an assumption?

2. The awards aren't just about porn stars. They are just as much about the studios, directors and and other people that are involved in producing a DVD. A DVD awards program isn't about your favorite fuck scene or human pin cushion. Would a studio be honored by an award that is in essence a People's Choice award? I think so.

3. Let the studio reps and stars that participate here comment on number 3.

4. Maybe we can get a group discount on head examinations. So many of us around here appear to be delusional. I thank you for being so concerned for our mental well-being. Can you recommend any good shrinks?

Why do you waste your time on a 'dinky' website? I can nearly guarantee that not one person here cares what you have to say. You ripped off a valued member of this community with a bad trade. And you insult people on a regular basis. Why don't you go somewhere with meaning?

First off I paid that member for the dvds, but I said I was sorry for that, and I was just voicing my opinoin on me no need to get Al Gore on me. I just think leave the awards to the professional's AVN.

VCA: 1) it wouldn't matter if physical statues were handed out or not. The companies can use any awards or nominations as advertising. I routinely see mainstream movies post excerpts from some small newspaper's review and display them prominently. Granted, it usually means all the major reviewers panned it but still.

2) All of the stars and production people I've seen in chat have been very nice to us. When we compliment them, they always seem to appreciate it. In such a negative industry, I'm sure they find it nice to hear something positive once in awhile. As far as this site being "dinky", I can only say that if this is the case, how come it has so many people in the industry clamoring to become affiliated with it or use it as a way of learning more about what customers want?

3) Doesn't mean anything to whom? Obviously it means something to someone or there wouldn't be so many people using the site's resources-be they the forums, price search, or reviews (amoung other things).

3.1) AVN, for all it's MANY faults, has a lot of support. Most of the support coming from advertisers that know (or have very good reason to believe) that they will receive better reviews and/or support in return based on how many pages of advertising they buy. I hear this from people that worked there-ie: Gene-as well as companies that have won (or lost) various awards. At times, even the common man (like me) notice major problems with their choices that go beyond simple mistakes. A few have been pointed out here recently.

4) The idea has been mulled for a long time by Steph, Drew and Roger. While I routinely disagree with each of them, this is a good idea and they were quite sane to think of it. Smartblonde started this thread so I commend her foresight too. What's the downside to the idea? Perhaps that no one will care? Big deal! A lot of people visit this site and if they don't care, so be it. Don't fault people for trying to expand on the ways this site can help consumers. Personal attacks on members are also prohibited. By claiming DB should have her head examined, you broke the rules. It's a good thing you left before you were kicked off, huh? (see, since you aren't a member anymore, I can say all this and stay inside the rules.

Let's face it, how many places can you go that care about the consumer first? How many set things up in such a way that also help the industry promote it's better side? Too few! I'm glad to part of this community and have tried to contribute in return. I always wondered if you've ever seen a dvd you didn't give an almost perfect grade (or even one you liked enough to write more than a paragraph about), I guess I'll never find out.

As far as the site going downhill, I'll chalk it up to sour grapes since you never mentioned a single reason WHY you thought so. I hope you find rec.arts.movies.erotica more fulfilling with it's huge noise to signal ratio... Bye!

Steph and Drew: You were both more than nice to him for a long time. It's to both of your credit that you didn't return his hostile attitude in fair measure. Apparently, he had such a fixed viewpoint about what is/was/should be about everything, that he had no ability to grow beyond his limitations. We're better off without him.

Of course any good award show needs rules. I have one to promote.
Rule 1: Judges may not have a member name that promotes a particular production company. For example, something like VIVIDRules or VCARocks.(We might even consider the same for reviews)
Rule 2: A nominee is disqualified(or is that wins) if they have cybersex with a judge.
Rule 3: During the ceremony, Endorphin will be referred to as "His Royal Funkyness Whom We all Love and Adore and Admire".(Hey! If you don't like it, you come up with the rules.
Rule 4: HoustonDon gets an award for "most well-thought out comments". The prize? A new keyboard. Don, you gotta have worn that thing out by now
Rule 5: Anyone who nominates a Dirty Debutantes Movie shall be thrown in a pit with rabid Koala Bears.

AVN's laughable nominations this year only succeed in emphasising the need for a credible DVD awards ceremony elsewhere. So it makes perfect sense to me that the best two adult DVD sites on the web should decide to set the wheels in motion.

As far as the voting is concerned, I'm not sure why you would need a committee to shortlist titles or decide the winners. Why not adopt a similar system to the Academy Awards where every registered user casts their votes, which are then counted to decide the nominees. Once the shortlist is drawn up for each category (max.4 or 5 titles) a second round of voting by members decides the winners.
Is this a workable idea? I don't think it needs to be any more complex than that.
The only issue then is how Rog's readers cast their votes. Maybe he could direct them here to register beforehand.

Whatever you decide on it should be good fun and is sure to generate plenty of publicity for Adult DVD Talk.

i think people should be able to vote on some awards. the reason for a committee is so that these judges would watch every dvd nominated. if we open up every award to a general vote then we'll have people voting in categories where they haven't seen all the dvds nominated. it's also impossible to prevent cheating in a general vote. we have ways of making cheating difficult, but someone will always find a way.

How will the titles be nominated in the first place? If you have a handful of self-styled 'experts' playing God by choosing the nominees then the awards lose a massive amount of credibility, IMO. The whole attraction of this awards idea is that it should be voted for by the consumers, regardless of how many DVDs they have seen.
I thought you logged IP addresses for registered users. Doesn't that limit the amount of vote rigging?

How does the voting work at other sites, such as IMDB.com?

Just curious.

first - nothing i'm saying here has been decided - i'm just throwing out ideas. hopefully i can meet with rog soon to talk about this.

i think the nominations should absolutely come from the people. but how can people legitimately vote in a category where they have only seen two of the nominees?

when i say committee - i don't mean people who think they're porn experts. i mean a group of people who've seen enough porn to make intelligent decisions - a group of people with different tastes. i, personally, do not qualify to be a judge (just as an example.)

IF there are judges, i think they should have to explain WHY they voted for something. that's one of my issues with the AVN awards. they could have said 'we nominated dinner party cause it's a great movie - we know there are problems with the dvd...'

IP addresses are not a solid means of foiling cheaters. I won't explain all the ways to get around that, but there are plenty. Certain studios have discovered ways around that and tried submitting reviews on their own product (at least with a review it's pretty obvious.) We can make it difficult to cheat. But we can't prevent it. No website can.

Here's a few ideas off the top of my head for curbing the stuffing of the ballot box:

1)Only registered forum members will be able to vote/cast nominations. (i.e. registered voters only)

2)Nominations will be made through a special entry form on the web site. To confirm the nomination an email will be generated and sent to the address in the profile of the registered forum member. There will be a link in this email that they must click to 'cast' their vote. After the vote is 'cast' no more entries will be accepted from that email address.

3)After the nominations are tabulated a similar voting process will be used to select the winners as in #2 above.

Of course there may be ways around this process but they will be quite cumbersome. I will attempt to make it as difficult as possible to stuff the ballot box.

How does this sound?

I should have my head examined? Humph! Let me just say, I've never had any complaints, thankyouverymuch!

As far as the voting goes, I just thought at first the reviewers, because most of them are more knowledgable about what makes a dvd good, including the technical side of things,
than the rest of us. I personally don't want the responsibility of voting, nor do I think people should vote on titles they haven't even seen. But now, even within the pool of reviewers, which VCArules was one of, I might add (proving
how democratic they are here) there are those who have worked harder, for lack of a better term, than others.
Letting everybody vote on everything would make it more of a "People's Choice" type of awards, which there's nothing wrong that, it's just a different type of award.

Astroknight,
Sorry 'bout that. I've been saying that since 1993 and will continue to say it until somebody laughs. What I lack in a sense of humor I'm trying to make up for in persistence.

As far as the call for labotomies is concerened, that's not such a bad idea. While drastic, I suspect a professionally performed labotomy would be very relaxing.

Oneloa - Glad you like it. (I think you suggested the forum membership requirement this past Saturday night.) I don't think the forum membership is such a great idea though since not all of Rog's users are registered in our forum. I'll have to talk to Rog about that part. Maybe there will be a voter registration page for people not registered for the forum? Soo many ways to go about it.

I think we are getting together with Rog sometime soon. We'll work out the details.

I've got to put in another two cents here and say that there's got to be a compromise that will maintain the integrity of the awards as far as making sure the truly deserving ones are represented, and keeping everyone happy. That's why I thought there should be a separate "fan" category , because like Steph said
"i think the nominations should absolutely come from the people. but how can people legitimately vote in a category where they have only seen two of the nominees?"
Can someone please answer this question?

If we want these awards to have the prestige and ability to reward good work, hence encouraging more good work,
that I believe they can, we've got to trust people who know what that means.
I personally don't have the kind of time it would take to view all the nominees, and even if I did, I'd probably vote with my , ah, pussy, to be blunt. Oh, yeah, Erik Everhard, he's HOT, I'm votin for whatever he's in whether I've seen or not!
Now, while this type of voting may be good for Erik, it does little to further the cause or inspire the studios for more quality work.
So, please people, try to look at the big picture here! But, what do I know, I'm just a crazy lady. DB

And the members of the Academy have chosen......

I think we would have to pick a group of judges. We will incorporate the popular vote and the judges' votes in some type of mathematical model. Something along the lines of each judge can cast one vote per category. In addition to the judeges' votes the first place winner of the popular vote gets X number of votes, second place gets (X-Y) votes. The value of X and Y will be set to be equivalent to roughly 25% and 10% of the total number of votes, respectively. That way the popular vote can influence the decision but is not solely responsible. (This concept and percentages are only meant for discussion purposes. They aren't set in stone.)

I think the panel of judges should be comprised of reviewers from both ADT and Rog's site in equal numbers. We'll get copies of the DVDs out to the judges if they haven't seen a title so they can make an informed decision.

We will have a limited number of categories this first time around. I would like to limit it to 5 DVD specific categories with 4 nominees each. Any more and the process becomes too large in scope.

Drew - Since ROG doesn't have a forum, the voting will have to be done here. Which means that you can require people to sign up for membership before they vote. I don't think that's asking too much of the voters.

Our biggest problem (as several have stated) is finding someone that has seen all the movies. I don't think that's going to happen. So, we might have to go with the popular vote of less than perfect voters. Let's keep this fun and not take it too seriously.

I've yet to read a convincing argument explaining why it should be necessary to have seen every title nominated. If you only canvass the opinions of a few reviewers, that's hardly a wide enough cross-section of voting to form the basis for an awards presentation.

If you have a true people's awards then everyone votes for their favourite movie/performer and the most popular always wins. The winners don't have to be the most 'worthy' or critically acclaimed.

I disagree with the assumption that the only people capable of making intelligent decisions are the ones who've overdosed on porn recently, especially when the majority of porn movies released on DVD are absolute garbage.
Maybe other people are wiser and therefore more selective when choosing which DVDs to watch, but that shouldn't make their opinions less worthwhile.

The ongoing Presidential fiasco was the inspiration for the concept. Should we state in the rules that manual recounts are impossible in a computer-based voting system?

Yeah, but what if someone had intent on voting but didn't click their mouse correctly? Or what if they get confused on what button to click and vote for the wrong movie? We'd have nothing but lawsuits.

For giving everybody a chance to feel like their vote counts, why not do a couple 'fan favorite' categories? I think MTV does something like it in their awards shows, and we all know that if MTV is doing it everybody should do it. Favorite DVD, actor, and actress could be voted on by anybody (since for all we know, The Dinner Party is considered by the public to be the best DVD ever made ). Best DVD, actress, and actor, etc. could be voted on by the 'experts'.

we should be OK. lol

Hmmm. The WAD award. Maybe we could give out kazoo type trophies (since all real awards shows have trophies). That way the winners could go home and...........
Blow their WADs!
Seriously, though, it's a good idea for a name.

Drew, ahem...I think I already named them.
I need a Cliff Notes version of this thread. I'm gettin dizzy reading it. Here is what I gather..
1. Awards suggested.(Give dumblonde credit)
2. We're working on it
3. VCARules attacks idea and leaves.
4. Remaining members wage war.
5. Endorphin injects humor, but it goes unnoticed.
6. Serious discussion continues. Drew works on math problem. Endorphin gets confused.
7. Endorphin fully appreciates the irony of extending a long post by saying it needs a cliff notes version.
