my question of the day for you guys is what constitutes a porn star?

would you consider someone who only does girls a porn star? like tanya danielle?

would you consider someone who has only done 2 movies a porn star? like austyn moore?

You've got the same watch as me and I've mislaid mine. Give it back! I noticed while watching you boff Deauxma on that My Friend's Hot Mom site.

Porn Stars? Girl girl is fine, but maybe a little more exclusive a club to enter. Think Janine or Sandy. As for number of movies I'd guess more than a few, but less than a lot. Make of that what you will. 6 or more for feature? around 20 for gonzo? I'm really just pulling numbers out of my ass.

Being a big enough cheese to be on more than a few boxcovers probably doesn't hurt. Though the phrase is so ubiquitous many just use "porn star" in place of "porn performer".

First reaction, frankly: DO WE REALLY NEED ANOTHER THREAD ON DEFINITIONS OF PORN STAR?

Second reaction: Juha, behave, give a nice answer.

In my opinion a "porn star" is somebody who moves product by his name.

I know many people consider "porn star" as a general term for anybody who has ever appeared in porn.

s/more than a few boxcovers/more than a few boxcovers of "decent/well-known (outside of the raincoater niche) companies"

Some boxcovers for more or less obscure conmpanies do not count.
A boxcover for anything other than Vivid, Wicked, Private, DP, EA (in Europe add Goldlight/Dorcel/Colmax produced/distributed movies) does not count.

Just because you are on the cover of movies some Basque hat wearing Gauloises smokers are familiar with doesn't make a movie star, being the hip babe of raincoaters does not make a pornstar.

porn stars = contract girls

the rest are porn whores.

but, seriously, I've never given the definition much thought. Porn star is simply a person starring in porn productions.

So you're saying, for example, that Lanny Barbie's spectacular covers for 3rd Degree (and others) over the past year "don't count"?

And, yes, I'd consider Lanny Barbie a "pornstar" by any standard.

FYI, I'm not a Lanny Barbie SFB (slathering fan boy). I just think that being the "cover girl" for certain limited studios is just a ridiculous standard.

I can accept the idea that, IF you are a cover girl for a major studio, you are virtually, by definition, a "star." However, there are many stars that seldom, if ever, get the cover.

I can also think of spectacular two-scene career girls like Peaches who did get the cover (Breakin' 'em In #2 ) on their very first shoot!
As spectacular as many of us think Peaches was, two scenes does not qualify you as a "star."

In general, I think anyone who has five or more scenes to their credit can be referred to as a "pornstar."
That said, all pornstars are not "stars."

Yes.
And I think it is ridiculous that appearing on covers of products which are known to a fringe group only qualifies for being a pornstar.

Christian,
what's wrong? I answered your question.
Peter North and Lexington Steele for example are stars, because people buy their releases no matter what's the contents. People buy because its Peter or Lex, hence they are stars.

So now you're saying that 3rd Degree products "are known to a fringe group only"?

Are we on the same planet?

If you think getting a cover on the production of some obscure companies (1000 or 2000 copies?) with a shelf time of around 3 month can even remotely be compared with productions which (in its soft versions) make it into free TV and stay on the shelf for years, you live indeed on another planet.

Interesting. I remember reading some years ago that Jessie James, who had done a buch of amateur, some Seymore Butts , and a few 'pro' movies, getting a bunch of shit from other 'stars' because at a convention she billed herself as a 'porn star'.

For me it is a generic term for men or women who have done hard core porn for commercial distribution, g/g included. Number of scenes does not matter.
'Star' can also mean for some a person who has larger popularity and recognition with the buying public, but I exclude that in this context. Many who watch porn don't know one screen name from another, except whomever idiot radio personality tells them is good.

On my planet, or at least in the United States, porn "in its soft versions" does NOT appear on "free TV" -- no matter which company produced it. Paid cable, yes. Paid hotel pay-per-view, yes. Free TV, no way.

On my planet, "1000 or 2000 copies" is the typical sell through quantity for virtually all titles made by virtually all companies. I believe Dave Cummings has explained to us that he has to calculate budgets based on about 1500 units being sold.

But, I'm sure you'd consider Dave, his studio and his many websites to be "obscure" known only to a "fringe group." If so, please let Attorney General Gonzalez know that Dave is but a bit player and that he shouldn't bother him with regards to the 2257 mess

The average Club Jenna DVD sells 30000 copies.
The Club Jenna DVDs with Jenna as the lead sell 50000 copies.

I think you guys have missed something here. Seems like everyone thinks being a porn "star" has to do with box covers and quantity of flicks sold. What about quality of the performance? What about her personality {i.e. relationship with fans.} Stars of the caliber of Jenna Jameson, Christy Canyon, and Belladonna are star because they're unique, gorgeous, and have produced consistent top-quality performances.

I'll shut up and climb down from the pulpit now.

{You ask the same question of Hollyood too. Then again, they're just "acting" as opposed to porn stars who are performing.}

Please note my use of the words "typical" and "virtually."

I hope we can all agree that Jenna Jameson is a huge exception to what is typical in the world of porn. Jenna has become an industry and a brand-name unto herself. She's the "go to" name and reference for all those outside the industry as well.

I don't believe this at all.
My first post in this topic, in fact, was to take issue with box covers as a stansard {excerpt):

Stars are not the typical bunch, and stars have a recognition value that goes beyond the hardcore fringe group of dedicated followers of the genre/discipline.

The numbers given by juha should make your point moot also.

If you think selling 1000 tickets for softball game is big a success you may be right.
Nevertheless even the substitute player in a NFL match with 30 000 tickets sold is more star-like than the best softballer.

Being UNTYPICALLY successful constitutes a star. At least outside of porn valley.

But if it makes you happy, I'm willing to tell you: BABY, YOU'RE A STAR.

I remember when girls who had a lot of potential but weren't widely known outside of the industry yet were called starlets. A starlet was a good thing. You were fresh, and had the potential to be a star if you did more movies with the same caliber performances that you had done.
Star was reserved for not just contract girls, but also girls who were considered A-list performers. IMO, it seemed that the girls who were called stars were the ones who would be recognized by an average porn fan at a convention.

Gradually, it got to where if a girl did one movie, TV shows like Jerry Springer, radio like Howard Stern, and the feature dance circuit would call her a porn star. It went from seeming elite to seeming sleazy and ordinary.

My definition of a porn star is someone who has sex on film and then that product is sold. If you can purchase a movie of someone in an adult movie store, then yes they are a porn star. When Janine only shot girl/girl there was no arguement she was a porn star and a succesful one at that. Some girls shoot 50-60 videos in 10 years, while others shoot 300 in half that time. Both ways work and you can be succesful either way. Also since signing with Adam&Eve in March 05' I have shot 7 of my 8 movies I signed a contract for, its just they take a while to get out! Trust me if it was my choice all 8 would be done and out!!!!!

It's almost generic, like Tricia said.

But to really qualify, I think you would have to make enough impact to have some fan buzz, collect a few box covers, and stick around from one AVN convention to the next.

It's also attitude ...

The "Star" part is loosly thrown around, but I think any girl who has been in a movie that was sold for a profit can call herself a Pornstar!
