1. Countries which Produce a lot of porn (meaning they have porn production companies headquartered there and which do their editing there) include :
USA France Italy Germany Spain (Private is headquatered in Barcelona) Japan Hong Kong Brazil (moved up from list below after Gabriel Nine's post -- haven't seen it imported to US though)
2. Countries which clearly ALLOW lots of porn to be filmed within their borders and sold there include, in addition to the above :
All of the European Union (Britain used to allow only softcore, but that now seems to be relaxed, perhaps?) The whole former Eastern Block in Europe (Budapest & Prague being the happy hunting ground for plentiful beautiful wannabe porn starlets) Canada Probably all of Latin America (though I'm not sure, maybe not) Australia New Zealand (I'd guess) Philippines Islands states of the Pacific
3. Countries I'm not sure about:
Mainland China Taiwan India Sub-Saharan (black) African countries
4. Counries which clearly DON'T allow EITHER production, or filming of porn include:
All Moslem theocratic states or with predominantly Moslem populations, from Morocco to Indonesia.
India I'm now a bit curious about, since you brought this up. Because they have a huge domestic film industry -- consisting mostly of a unique Indian musical style. But I've never heard of any porn from there.
There is a lot of porn made in the UK, mainly by guys labouring under pun-based sub-Ben Dover monickers. Some of the stuff done for UK based softcore cable/satellite channels is available in harder versions abroad. A lot of US and foreign guys have shot in the UK too.
Sweden, the Netherlands and Denmark were often seen as traditional homes of porn, and indeed played crucial roles in the legalisation and commercialisation of the industry. They have since been left behind somewhat, Sweden's Private, as have been noted moved to Spain, and Color Climax, the traditional Danish smut pedlars, are in some kind of financial difficulty.
I seem to have seen on my internet travels some Indian videos, from German labels. I don't know if there is actually an Indian porn biz as such.
Brazil seems to make a lot of smut for a domestic market that does seem to demand more unusual material!
As to whether porn is made in strict Islamic states, I do recall a recent and horrifying incident where a woman was stoned to death in either Iran or Iraq (yes, I know, two very different countries but it's my fault, I just can't quite remember) for making an adult movie. I'll look this one up, but please feel free to add/correct me on it.
Speaking of snuff Planet Sex, there is considerable debate as to whether there actually ever really was any. As opposed to people just specualating that that was going to be the next thing, other people jumping the gun and saying they had heard of it or seen it, and then anti porn people picking this up and campaigning against it. (Obviously I think the making of snuff would be/was/is horrific.)
The rumors usually talked about South America as being where it was made.
Also Planet Sex, I was hoping you'd jump in on whether porn can be made/filmed throughout Latin America. Or distributed.

Snuff movies are NOT an urban legend, but there's no such a thing as a "snuff movie ring" either. An operation like that would be discovered sooner or later, cause it's more horrid than child porn.
And yes, you can produce and distribute porn movies freely in Brazil.
Also, yeah I KNOW one can make and film porn in Brazil. Duh. At least 3-4 Buttman titles take place there. I was wondering about say Chile, Perus, Venezuela, Argentina, Columbia, Mexico, etc. Well, there seem to be some US shoots in Mexican resorts.
For one thing, I only quoted this as it may be of interest to readers here and to show the existence of pornography in this country. I made no claim that it was a legit business, but it is undeniably being made there.
For another, like dexplorer, I would be interested to hear some real evidence of the existence of snuff movies. have you seen one? Do you know if anyone has ever been arrested, charged, prosecuted for making one? As things stand, they are very much an urban myth because no-one seems to be able to back up this allegation with real evidence. Maybe we should be glad that they can't.

- I've heard of at least two arrests of guys fool enough to try their hands at snuff moviemaking - one in Germany, other one somewhere in the country formerly known as Russia.I saw some porn movies made in Chile and Argentina. The Argentinian one was a spoof of a mexican comedy series - I don't know the american name, but it was the very same series that inspired the Bee Guy from Simpsons.
Well in that case I hope they get genuine full term life in prison.
I don't know about that. In post Feminism II America these days, you can be arrested for simulated rape. If its also got hardcore sex. Or anyway rape falls outside of the LA DA's office "safe harbor" which the porn industry is by and large staying within, to avoid having to litigate to SEE if they're actually going to get thrown in jail and stay there. It's one of the "seven deadly sins. So is "excessive violence against women".
Maybe same thing for simulated murder -- accompanied by hardcore sex, or if it came just before, etc. In fact I'm just about sure that simulated snuf would land someone in court in LA, or anywhere in the US today.
Seeing as how Seymore Butts is currently in litigation from the LA DA over his putting fully visible fisting in an American made recent porno "Tampa Tushy", these LA district attorney warnings are not paper threats.
Sorry, I don't mean to be argumentative about it, but merely saying you heard of reports doesn't convince me! Can you provide some links? The web helps to perpetuate stories like this where people can't actually quote real evidence and rely on hearsay. Here's a link to a story you may find interesting...it puts a hole in the existence of the snuff movie as such.

Sorry Gabriel, but there is at least TWO documented cases of murders on tape. Those may be the only ones available, so there ARE snuff movies.
There are only TWO movies spoken entirely in Esperanto. That doesn't mean that there are NO movies in Esperanto. Same logic go to snuff tapes. They're surprisingly (and thankfully) few, but they DO exist.
Thing is: there is NO such thing as a "snuff mafia" that makes those kinda movies and sell it undergroundly.
I'm with Gabriel Nine. Until I see proven instances of it, I don't believe that Snuff movies exist. Or anyway, consider it an open question as to whether they do.
One of the reasons I say that is that so many people and groups have had various reaons for WANTING to believe they exist. Anti porn feminists and religicos who claim that that is where it is all inevitably heading, for example, if we allow any porn at all. All sorts of people who deplore it, but still have a lurid fascination with the idea that something that evil and related at least somewhat to what they (perhaps guiltily) enjoy, that is hardcore porn. And so on.
In other words there are ALL SORTS of reasons and motivations which people have to believe this stuff, without much evidence. ANd often when someone claims to know about it's existence, they can't point to any hard evidence. As it appears you can't.
If you can, PLEASE do!!
(I certainly think it's possible it exists. I just don't know that it does.)
So Bro, link us to the reputable news source that reported that Planet!! Please!

Although there are many movies which contain scenes of real death (the original Ben Hur, for example) most of the movies which parade themselves as 'snuff' films are fakes -- the most famous being 'Snuff' itself.
There is some evidence that certain killers have filmed their exploits, but that would have been for their own enjoyment, not for anyone else's entertainment. As for 100% genuine snuff, as in taylor-made for a certain type of very sick audience ... YES, in this case, it was never heard of an authenticated case.
But there ARE murders caught on tape.

BTW, I'm not a fan of Cecil Adams, but here is goes....
Well none of the examples of filmed actual death which Cecil Adams cited as having seen or knowing exists involved a female performer having hardcore sex and then being intentionally killed. The instance of the serial killers who may have had sex and then filmed their killing was not at all solid, nor was their any evidence of an underground distribution of that footage (if it exists) to a paying clientel.
So so far, the answer is NO . There isn't any hard evidence of any genuine snuff film having ever been made and distributed underground.
Exactly. I can readily recall commercial products such as a video featuring real execution footage (caused a fuss around 10 years ago in the UK), there are plenty documentaries that show real deaths in them. I also would not be surprised that killers filmed their crimes for themselves, but as dexplorer says, not for distribution in the way that the term snuff movie is understood.
What I always find strange is that no-one can put names to these videos. In the article quoted, Ted McIlvenny who is supposed to be an expert makes what sound like unsubstantiated claims to me - that "wild horses" number is like the sort of totally made-up scare stories that anti-porn feminists have used for a long time. If these videos do exist, I have yet to hear of anyone else seeing them. And as for a man strangling himself during an auto-erotic asphixiation, do me a favour! Sure that is possible (and more common than you might think), but who was handling the camera? Did the camera man just watch him do it? Or did he have it on a tripod? Or was someone callous enough to find him dead and then make his home video available??? Come on! Then there is the question that how do you know these are for real? Presumably they are amateurish or semi-pro quality at best, so then it's hard to tell what is for real and what is not. A guy "dies" in an SM beating - then gets up when the camera is turned off...see what I mean? How do you really know?
That is not to say that I am entirely disbelieiving - given the cheapness of life in some parts of the world it would not be surprising at all to find people had made sex videos with real death. However, I would say that I remain to be convinced.
Speaking of pornos made in Brazil, and understanding your statement that "90% of Brazilian pornos suck" -- how about the other 10%?
Or more specificially, if you were going to recommend a single Brazilian porno DVD, what would it be? Something that has an especially Brazilian flavor. And something where the fact that we can't understand a word (it being in Portugese) isn't going to matter too much.
I don't know that I'm gonna rush to the net and try to order it immediately, but it would be good to know about.
Or if there are any especially hot Brazilian porno babes to look out for.
Another question about the Brazilian porn world for you. (And who better to ask, you being an editor of a Brazilian porn mag!)
Are porn actresses (and actors) "ghettoized" in Brazil the way they are in America, and so far as I can tell, more or less are (but not quite so much) in Europe?
By that I mean, is there the same sort of big wall to hurdle to make a transition from porn acting to mainstream acting in film or TV? Well, actually that's starting to change a bit in the US, what with some porn actresses appearing as E! network interviewers or personalities I hear, but it still seems to be mostly there.
Yeah, there's the Traci Lords saga. But part of what she seems to have had to do -- or did anyway -- was to market herself as an underaged porn victim. (Who therefore couldn't be "blamed".
Of course a good part of what the "hurdle" is really all about in the US is simply that most porn actress can't act. But I don't think that's all of it, or applies in every case. (Tricia Devereaux seemed like she could act to me. For example, her dialogue with Chloe in the early parts of Gangbang Girls 17 (Hot Disk!!!) is quite natural and good -- and it's Tricia who's carrying it.)

They suck a little less.None, cuz the movies I directed will never see the light of DVD.
Well, there's one volume of the brazilian Scorpion series, produced by the brazilian Elegant Angel, that's actually pretty good. But avoid the ones directed by Marcelo Storelli as if they were the prague.
Brazilian flavour? Ferget it, dude. Our oh-so-talented directors spend too much time trying to copycat John Stagliano. Or at least what they THINK John Stagliano movies are.

No such thing as "porn actresses" in Brazil. What we do have are scort girls in search of quick money.Dude, our "porn stars" have trouble spelling MGM backwards! Acting? Are you kidding? Nonono. Those who act go right to TV. Those who don't stay in porn for the average three months and then, it's oblivion time.Traci Lords is a phenomenon, an anomaly. She can't act her way our of paper bag, and yet she gets parts in a lot of movies - even LEADING roles. She can't sing, and yet she has a CD out.In the USA, that's NOT entirely true. I've seen pretty good acting jobs from porners. John Leslie is the first one that comes to mind. Debi Diamond did an EXCELLENT piece of physical comedy in a movie whose name I forget, so I guess she was underused all those years. Ashlyn Gere can act. Problem is, she's usually badly directed. And there's more.
And the Portugese language thing creates automatic barriers to foreign products. (Or so I would think.) Sure some of the Euros have a Portugese soundtrack or subtitles, but not that many.
If only I was better at picking up foreign languages quick!! <gg>
Why on earth doesn't a genuine Brazilian Buttman or Seymore Butts or someone arise? Surely there is a market for some better domestic product in Brazil, isn't there? Big country, big population, wierd (almost unique that is) language.
PlanetThat's "escort girls" I assume. Or is scort some new Brazilian sex term, like papazuda? <gg>

Yeah, it's open. And the competition is exceedingly mediocre. If you really want it, you can open a company in Brazil and be a menace even to the almighty Evil Empire.
OR you can just want to make a quick buck and become "just one more" among the legion.
Cuz they want to make movies for CHEAP. And when I say cheap, I mean less than U$ 1000 per titles.
Cuz they don't know SHIT about the basics of filmmaking, they don't know how to direct, how to block a scene, where to point a camera, how to light a set, how to mantain focus and, more important, how to EDIT it all together. The EDITING is the part that breaks EVERY FUCKING BRAZILIAN PORN MOVIE, cause those suckers don't want to spend more than 10 hours in front of an editing bay.
Only movie I did that I'm proud of took 68 hours of editing. And it was a fucking rushed job.

POPOzuda.
"scort" is "escort" mispelled. You don't have the slightest idea about how we brazilians love to mangle the English language.
In the seventies, a lot of stores added a "'s" in their names, to make 'em sound "american".
Well YOU sure don't mangle the English language when you don't want to.
I've been wondering whether you are native Brazilian born. Do you have an English speaking parent or two?
Sorry about the popozuda. <g> I had a feeling I didn't get it quite right. Was too lazy to look it up via the Buttman title. I guess I'll remember it now. Love the term!

Yes, I am brazilian born. From an italian family.
And well, english isn't THAT complicated to learn. In fact, it's a very practical language. Even the slangs make perfect sense. No wonder it's so popular worldwide.
Sorry to hark back to this, but I couldn't let this one go...Ah, not exactly though! A slight bit of revisionism there... Read them back...while denying the existence of snuff movie rings, you were claiming that the snuff movie is NOT an urban legend - both by inference and allusion to wholly unsubstantiated instances you are suggesting that they DO exist. The mere fact that it is possible that one exists does not necessarily make it so. What I am saying is that though it is not outside the realm of possibility, there appears to be no conclusive evidence of the existence of snuff movies, therefore it is only realistic to conclude based on best available information that snuff movies DO NOT exist. The quote from Adams does suggest this, referring to hiding ALL traces of their handiwork, i.e. no movies have been found! Sorry to be really pedantic about this. Those of you who are sick about reading this will be happy to hear this is my last post on the subject. And no hard feelings Planet Sex, man, I am not trying to get at you personally.

I think we're having conflicting views about the real MEANING of the term "snuff movie".
Thank's to Michael and Roberta Findlay's, uh, "classic" (that I have on tape), "snuff" became sinonymn with the kind of movie where a girl is raped and killed on-camera.
But no. The definition is even broader.
"Snuff" is ANY kind of movie that shows a real murder captured on camera.
By this definition, the Zapruder tape is a bonafine snuff.
This is in no small part because your definition is fundamentally incorrect. You seem to want to dismiss the Findlay's movie as blurring the issue, which is impossible to do credibly since the phrase "snuff movie" would not be in common usage, or any usage, for that matter, if that dumbass movie (and the publicity it received from people like Gloria Steinem) had never existed. Otherwise, it would have been a forgotten example of irreverent slang lost in the pages of Ed Sander's Manson family book. For a movie to qualify as "snuff" it must a) be created on a semi-professional level with the intention to be offered for sale at some point. This leaves out the genre which I like to refer to as "documentary evidence." The Zapruder film, the videos of Lake and Ng, etc. then, by definition, do not qualify as "snuff." b)They must be pornographic (ie. sexually explicit). This has been a part of the mythos which Steinem, Findlay, Linda Lovelace (who claimed that women in porn were forced to star in snuff movies, in Logan's Run style, as soon as they got too old, a allegation often repeated by Steinem) created pretty much from whole cloth. Again, by definition, Zapruder is out. c) The material must be commercially distributed in some form. Until I see irrefutable evidence that a "snuff" ring has been broken up by the FBI, Interpol, etc. I will have no choice but to declare it a particularly silly urban myth. Now, for your reading pleasure, please enjoy my review of Killing For Culture

Ah well. Why don't we just forget the snuff issue? I'm NOT really interested in this kind of, uh, "movie making".
