Now not all agents are created equal and therefore what I'm describing won't apply for all of them but essentially an agent is a guy or girl who through luck or what not comes into contact with individuals that want to earn money shooting adult oriented entertainment. I'm lo to say porn because some agents will book girls for what are essentially nude only shoots so not what I consider porn. The agent make sure that his/her models get as much work as they want based on what is on their dance card. The more options the more job opportunities that performer will get. That frankly is the easy part. The hard part is making sure that his/her model doesn't flake on a shoot and I think this is where agents probably spend most of their time because it's one thing to get a model to agree to do something and quite another to her to go to bed early, get a good night of sleep and be ready to get dry fucked by a stranger for a couple of hours in a cold room and have to do all those uncomfortable positions so that us fans get all the possible angles to see the action. You have to realize that we are often talking about young people who may want to go party and don't pay close attention to their calendar to see that they have to be on set at 8h30am the next day so they stay out until 3 in the morning and then crawl in bed half-drunk/stoned.

Therefore agents/producers/models have a sort of symbiotic relationship where each feeds off of the other but in turn each feeds the other.

The agents do not spend the majority of their time keeping their girls in line. They spend most of their time recruiting new girls because the drop out rate is high.

A basic agent will just arrange shoots and find replacements if the girl flakes out. Not much more.

A good agent will style a model, have proper photos taken, and steer her to the right producers. eg, Ellie Eilish before and after she switched to Motley Models as her agent. Most agents can provide advice like what you mentioned, but they can't stop a girl from getting implants or tattoos. A good agent will keep pictures and information updated

What you two describe is pretty much what I was thinking but I always think that agents are more involved then they actually are especially in the "developing a look" department. Especially since looks is a huge part of being bookable, even more than performance.

fit18's example is a great one Ellie Eilish became a stone cold fox after going to Motley because I'm guessing they helped her change that quasi-gothic look she had.

So am I to understand that the girls book and pay for their own tests?

Like in the Hot Girls Wanted reality/docu show fit18 mentioned I've noticed some of the smalltime fetish clip circuit agents/producers seem to have similar arrangements where they have their models live together with them in the same house (usually big enough for shoots & meeting clients).

Many of these porn newbies that get chewed up are young homeless women, offering them a place to stay and company must seem pretty big.
