Hi everyone! I was hoping for some input on what everyone wants to see in a review. I've already jumped on the bandwagon and posted two today (it's a start). It occured to me that of the reviews I've read, some were better than others.
I want my reviews to be well received so I'm asking everyone what they want to see in a review. I intend on being honest-no whitewashes here-but I want to be fair too.
Any suggestions? Thanks!

Houston.
Just be honest.
Tell everyone what You thought of the movie.
What did you like what you didn't like and WHY.
I think thats the important part the WHY.
Thats the meat of a review.
Then there are the technical details
like
audio/video quality.
performer looks.
and so on.
For me I've been using a template I made sometime after My 2nd or thrid review.
I sat down and wrote out the things I wanted to know before buying a DVD.
(i really hate my first review, it doens't make too much sense to me what I was talking about now, LOL)
I think if you've seen a horrible DVD.
Write out the things you would have wanted to have known before you had purchased it.
Could help.

I know it matters to some people whether or not condoms were used in a sex scene. I don't care, so I keep forgetting to put it in my reviews. I'll try to do better.
Above all else, tell us what you think. Second to that, tell us if you would recommend it to a friend.

Do most people REALLY want a book report-style review?
I know for me, I'd rather not know the ENTIRE plot before I even rent/buy the flick. Especially for mainstream, but even for adult.
I would be really happy knowing the type of scenes included, the entire cast and director/writer/camerperson/company, etc. Also, how long the flick is, the extras features. And of course, quality of video, audio, ease of use of the menus, and how good the actual video and the actual scenes are.
I guess I'd like to know a general storyline of the video or the scenes, just don't need a running commentary. If the DVD (or VHS) is reviewed really well, I'll see it for myself; if not, the plot doesn't matter to me.
Just last week, I passed on going to see "Bring it On" at the theatre because I read the plot twist in a newspaper critic's review. And would "Sixth Sense" been as intriguing if we all knew that (in Entertainment Weekly's review) the plot twist was that Bruce Willis was really... a woman?
Just curious what other people think. If everyone else likes the FULL story, I'll just continue closing my eyes when I reach the plot part of reviews on here.

For me I think I would like to know generally what the movie is about mostly in regards to mainstream movies. For adult films I look mostly for who is in the cast, I would like to know if facials or anal occurs, and it is cool when they say that so and so is doing something for the 1st time like when Serenity did b/g for the 1st time. I really don't care much for the plot as if I wanted a movie with a plot I will watch Braveheart. It is a sex movie so the acting or plot doesn't matter as much to me as if the sex is hot or not so letting me know how they felt the sex was would be important. Rog does a good job of that as I read his reviews a lot and I don't always agree with them but I think he does a good job on telling me what occurs and whether or not he liked it. A good example was his review on Extremely Yours Stryc-9. I had been debating whether or not to get one of her vids but since I was unfamiliar with her I read his review which was very flattering to it and so I got the film and I agree that it was a good film although using the large black woman to portray the real Stryc-9 was stupid. So there that is my 2 cents, lol. see ya

I don't like to know the whole story when it comes to a review (not that there shouldn't be a story but don't spoil it.). just need to know about the sex scenes not a step by step account though. just what kind of sex to expect oral, anal, dp's, air tight, fisting, golden shower,... I'm I going to far here?. Anyway, what would be nice to know is does the sex get boring, is every scene a suck, fuck, cum scene. Or do they do something a bit special. is it well filmed, is the film more erotic than just nasty.
It's difficult because everybody looks for something different in Porn. It's a hard job writing a review. it's easy to watch a porn.

Houstondon, I want to thank you for posting this topic. I think I need to modify my reviews a bit after reading these comments. I think I get WAY too much into the plot and leave out some details that people want. I need to go look at what I'm writing and make sure that these things are included.

I just want to say it gives me great pleasure to be approving so many reviews daily. The quality and the quantity of reviews are fantastic. It's also interesting to watch each one of us grow as a reviewer (excuse the cheese) - but you can definitely see changes in our reviewing styles over time. My early reviews bring tears to my eyes they're so bad
I'm going to get a DVD-ROM so I can cover some of the details people seem interested in. I'm just too lazy to go back into the house, turn on the DVD player and find the detail I missed (my computer is in an office separate from the house.) I also want to add in some significant screen shots to the review (then I can cut out 1000 words ) When I saw Evil do it I thought it was a great idea - see figure 1
Thanks to all who write reviews, it's not always easy - your efforts are much appreciated.

Plot twists in mainstream movies like Sixth Sense are important not to know. However, I've never seen a porn where I was really concerned about how the plot is going to twist. I watch porn for the sex. The plot can be awesome, but if the sex sucks or the actresses are butt ugly, then I don't want to watch it. However, I'm not really interested in reading about the plot in a review. I'd rather hear about the sex scenes, but not so much that it feels like I already watched it.
I don't want to read about every sex scene, but if there are are couple of great scences, I want to know about them. As well as the bad ones. For instance, I wish I knew more about Kelly the Coed 2 before I bought it. She had a great scene in it, but the rest sucked. There are also times when a movie has one scene that is so great that it doesn't matter if the rest sucks. I may not buy the movie, but I'll rent it or borrow it.

I agree with Evil-Rip just be honest and if you like the movie or not tell Why. (It wouldn't hurt if they can tell who took it up the ass and who don't,though)

Well, I have made some changes to my review format and I always welcome feedback.

If you have any comments for me or questions, post them here: BIGmike's reviews. I do listen to feedback, though I don't get as much as I would like to...

so tell me what you think of my reviews.

-I think it is great that fellow porners have such a great resource for price searching and review reading, in order to make wise purchases.

Hello,

It would be nice if you state any biases you have up front. If you're more into faces, bodies, anal, a particular director...just put that up front. For instance, I'm looking for quality and quanity of anal. I would put that up front so a reader knows where I'm coming from.

Just my 2 cents.

Rocco, I think the intent is to provide each reviewer with a page where they can state their preferences, adjust them as needed, etc. I really have no desire to start each review with something like, "I hate ass zits, circus act sex, and abuse to women". This topic has come up a bunch of times over the last 18 or so months and it's generally accepted that after reading a few reviews, most readers have a pretty good idea what to expect.

Wally: Any reason why you went so far back looking for this one?

BigMike: I agree with you on input. I've gotten a lot of input, some pretty harsh, so be careful what you ask for. I've changed a bunch myself and will eventually add screen captures when I get the capability to do so. I don't want to bug others to do it for me (lord knows Erika at Empire would do it, as would some others, but I don't want to become a pest like some have).

I changed my review format because some people complained about lack of opinion. So I went back, took a look at my past reviews and agreed it was time to change. So I did.

I haven't gotten any negative email so far, gotten a bit from industry representatives, complimenting me. As well as some great feedback from readers.

But I know that a lot of people must read my reviews and I am always learning new and better ways on how to improve.

I am also planning to add some screenshots to my future reviews, as soon as I get my new computer.

I change my reviews whenever someone makes a valid point in a constructive manner. All of our reviews have at least some merit in their own way but we'll never make everyone happy. I hate spoiling a feature movie for someone by telling all the details nearly as much as I hate the busy work involved in writing a splooge by splooge accounting of a gonzo movie.
I've received a number of compliments and a fair share of attacks too. The attacks almost never rose to a 6th grade level while some of the compliment givers proved they should be writing rather than I. Industry criticism almost always says something like; "we sell a lot of copies therefore the product must be good" or "you must be jealous of _____ since he gets laid more than you do". Personal attacks, like Skeeters and a few who didn't like my opinions on particular movies, usually follows along the lines of problems with my parental lineage, my glasses being fogged up, or simply being ignorant to some obscure factoid, real or imagined, about one of the performers.
I sometimes miss verb tense or other grammatical mistakes that I'd catch in a heartbeat were someone else to make them. I sometimes misread my notes too which gets pointed out to me from time to time (I don't always write a review immediately after watching a movie and rely on my extensive notes). For the most part, as long as the reviews are fun and not paid for, I'm happy with my current format (although I'd like to add screenshots too, it'll be awhile before that happens-feel free to have Steph add any to my reviews that make y'all happy). If I were reviewing for a professional site, I'd let them sit a day or so before re-reading them or handing them to an editor for correction. I've read an awful lot of crummy reviews on the net and I will say that they are improving all over-including at ADT. Now, if more people would use the links on ADT to buy their online purchases, Steph and Drew could afford to build a small cottage for visiting reviewers out back on their property. Inside would be a large screen HD TV, several models of dvd players, and a collection of dvd porn surpassing my own. Add in a refrigerator, central air, and I'm set for a few months at a time.

Hi Wally! Sure it's okay, it had been such a long time since it was active that I became curious. Keep looking for interesting old threads buddy!

I know that I'm in a minority on this but I consider the acting abilities of the girls very important. A nice-looking girl who can act is far more sexy than a beauty queen looking bored throughout the whole scene.

I beleive old threads are like gold mines if you search hard enough you'll find some good stuff (gold stones) that's why I like to dig very deep, ..I did the same thing with 5,6 others (I hope nobody minds) besides some times people ask questions that get only one reply or none but after an update will get a lot of them.

OK, it's an old quote (which I didn't realise until it was pointed out) but I like the new improved reviews HD.

The expanded description of the sex scenes gives the review more body and you cover all the pertinent points without laundry-listing. Looking good.

The only thing I could see to improve your reviews is fairly petty, but some formatting (pretty much just emboldening section headings) would make them easier to read imo.

As a weak-minded fool who would no doubt fall prey to many Jedi mind tricks, I have difficulty reading slabs of plain text, even with line breaks. A little bitta bold would go a long way, for me at least.

Cheers & thanks for all your reviews.

Rieekan333, thanks for the compliments. Look for some more bold text in the reviews submitted with The Fetish Collection and after. I really need to work up a template to save time (now that we're formatting more ourselves with the new system, it'll make it easier for me) and energy. I like a lot of the tricks that others use but I'm still getting my feet wet with the rare bold or the link to other people's reviews (I hope Vic liked my link to Anal Show 3).

There, everyone who thinks I'm stubborn and that you can't teach an old porn dog, new tricks is now proven wrong.

PS: Thanks to everyone sending nice comments about various reviews this past week or two-it really is appreciated. I haven't received hate mail in awhile, I guess I need to review some crummy titles now instead of the "good stuff".
