This is just a general question about people's tastes in porn...
Granted, I haven't seen lots of porn, but I have to admit that most of it I don't like. Usually, the video starts with twelve seconds of badly scripted credits. Then we cut right to the action. Some guy with an 18" schlong starts banging a woman that looks about as real as Barbie. Throw in a few position changes, some God-awful music, and a few moans from both "actors" (also about as realistic as Barbie), and a few obligatory cum shots. Cut to some more lame credits and a few phone sex ads at the end, and there's your $20.
Have I been watching the wrong videos or something? Again, my experience with pornography is pretty limited, but this whole process is carried out in such a clinical, dispassionate fashion that you feel like you're watching a how-to video. It's like the actors aren't people who even know each other; they're just screwing machines in action. Honestly, while it's nice to see a naked chyck, the "action" doesn't get my motor running - it's too... staged.
Lest you get the wrong impression, I have no problems with my libido, thank you. Rather, the things that turn me on about sex seem to be missing in most porn videos. Imagine the difference between Saving Private Ryan and an historical, military analysis of the troop movements at Omaha on D-Day. In most porn, the whole "flavor" of sex isn't there.
I don't have an answer to this - I'm just voicing an opinion about porn in general, just to see what people think... so speak up and take a stand here!

David-
Funny you should ask. I'm writing a 'column' right now on the basic differences between classic porn and today's movies. I think you'd like Insatiable and the original Debbie Does Dallas more than today's flicks (which are essentially a gallery of sex scenes strung together by some 'dialogue'.)

I kinda feel the same way (hey , that feels good!) mm
oh,
Many films are sex to bad acting to sex. not many films have talent behing the camera to make an artfull presentation of the sex.
I have found that some of the Andrew Blake films to be good in presentation and some plot.
Hidden Obsessions is a good one, staring Jannie, but it is only on VHS. Night Trips is also good, it is an older film staring Tori Welles, but this one IS on DVD.

Speaking of Andrew Blake -has anyone seen [url=468611]Wet</A?
I really want to see it.
If you don't mind the weird stuff there is a lot of atypical porn. Some of the Michael Ninn stuff is interesting -but I don't find it very sexually exciting. [url=468612]Zazel</A is in a class by itself. It's a very beautiful movie -vibrant colors, gorgeous women (Penthouse models), creative cinematography.

I've only seen a few porn movies in my life, but the one I liked best was from the '70s. It seemed to keep away from the weird and kinky stuff that goes on in porn movies today. I don't like anal sex, and I hate watching movies full of plastic-stuffed women with every imaginable body part tatooed and pierced.
When I order some DVD's tonight, I'm going to stick to the older stuff. Much more agreeable to my tastes.

Well, I'm not ashamed to admit that I've seen quite a bit of porn in my life, but much of it in fast forward...
I guess the reason why I like adult films and also why I have high standards in judging them is that my introduction to porn as a teenager was Debbie Does Dallas, Insatiable, and On White Satin. Talk about an introduction!
After that, most of the videos that I had access to (and could afford from the local video store and from mail order) were the late 80's/early 90's low quality crap from studios like Vivid, Legend, and Video Team.
Nowadays, I skip over these studios without giving a second look (unless they get a good recommendation).
Then came along folks like Buttman, Ben Dover, and Seymore Butts, who completely changed the definition of porn--the era of gonzo. One of the reasons I loved gonzo (and still do) is because it had wall to wall sex, with more or less good looking people, in more "real life" situations and less story and setup. Of course, as a fan of the Golden Age, I like elegant productions and stories, but if given the choice between the typical mainstream adult feature "story" and no story, I'll take no story every time.
However, over the past couple of years, gonzo has lost a lot of its appeal as it has turned into nothing but collections of loops ("Shut Up and Blow Me," "Only in the A Hole," etc.). Whereas 90-minute and 2 hour tapes used to be a great value, now studios commonly release tapes filled with really mediocre performances and ugly performers.
So now I'm the fourth phase of my constantly changing porn tastes: amateur and pro-am series. Why? Because there's the innocence and enthusiasm that's lacking in 99% of all porn. While there's a ton of crappy am and pro-am tapes, the good ones are real gems. My personal favorite series are: Real Sex Magazine, Prof. Mike's Collegiate Freshman Fantasies, Lone Star Virgins, Ben Dover, and selected Shane videos (Shane's Slumber Party, Shane's World, or Pornological).
Of course, I long for the glory days of the industry when the production values were high because it was expensive to shoot on film. So I've always been a fan of directors like Andrew Blake, Michael Ninn, Cameron Grant, Paul Thomas, and Kris Kramski, as well as studios committed to high-budget productions like Sin City, Wicked, and Private.
Finally, as far as pet peeves, I hate obviously fake breasts--it's a complete turn off. I know the industry encourages implants and that most women are either strippers who want to gain publicity or porn stars who want to supplement their income by stripping. Either way, it's sad to see women who are naturally beautiful mutilate themselves.
Anyway, that's a long answer to the question about my tastes.
Saki
P.S. Shadow77: I highly recommend the 20th Anniversary release of Insatiable on DVD. Not only is it arguably the best adult film ever, but Gloria Leonard's commentary, while at times containing "no duh" comments, is pretty good, and she talks about what made the Golden Age special in contrast to today's industry.

I like the production values of a Vivid title. However, it's the gonzo genre that I like better. There's just no hiding the heat and honesty in a gonzo flick. Seymore Butts' films are my favorite. Nice, long scenes and interviews are a real plus.

Saki, the Insatiable disc is one of the two I ordered last night. It looked like it would be very good, and since Steph recommended it, I figured I could not go wrong.

I just watched Top 25 Adult Stars of All Time -a great disc to introduce yourself to all the eras of porn. And the first scene is my favorite scene from Insatiable (I still haven't seen anything close to Insatiable.)
Plus you get 25 sex scenes. The only annoying part of the disc is the Jill Kelly, Jim Holiday talking in between scenes. The scene access menu is not that great.
But an excellent disc to see a little of everything -and some scenes that you'll never see on DVD.
Shadow-
Let me know how you like Insatiable -especially the pool table scene and the John Holmes finale (wow.)

Steph, I'll give you my impressions of Insatiable as soon as I watch it, which will be the day I get it in the mail.
Top 25 Adult Stars of All Time is the second disc I ordered from DivaDee last night. Sounds like I made a good choice.

David it's on the front page on the site. I'm going to reorganize the site this week. But for now I wanted to have more than just links on the front.

I guess I grown "numb" to the usual porno, seems like you're watching the same damn movie over and over.
Yet I can't get into the whole "story thang" either. I've seen all the classics, enjoyed the humor of the 80's, and watched quite a bit of the recent stuff (gonzo, etc)....but I am after the images after all, and my thumb hovers over the "jog" button to speed from sex scene to sex scene, skimming over the "plot".
But one genre that has captured my attention is the "artsy" visual style, for example the movies of Cameron Grant. His use of lighting, surreal imagery, and Great looking actors really hits my buttons. Another good example is Zazel. These films are also suitable for "couples" viewing.
Let me know what you think...

The "artsy" style for some reason would appeal to me more, if the acting were better! I like the trend of some porn being done with beautiful photography, the idea of porn as art is nice. But the acting is still too wooden in most that I've seen to make any semblance of "plot" interesting. The nice photography, though, helps.
I guess its because my first exposure to porn was the early 70s stuff, some of which tried to be artsy (e.g. The Opening of Misty Van Beethoven) and with much better production values than what happened in the late 80s.
I've been leary of both gonzo and amateur porn with the tons of crap out there. Finding the gems is rough in this world. I've discovered a few amateur-style websites that are really nice, in this regard, but finding films are tough.
Sometimes I think women get fake breasts for their own self-image, versus what others think... Most men I know do prefer real breasts, regardless of size... ladies get the jobs anyways.

I just rented the DVD of "WET" last night, and it's awesome. Great looking stars, sumptious scenery, good music that's well-recorded.
In two hours of video, I guess there's only about 20 minutes of fucking. Even less time spent on blowjobs. The rest is titilation.
Story line's almost non-existent, but it's a feast for the eyes and ears.
I'm surprised that none of the Adult video dealers stocks Andrew Blake's stuff. He has a lot of class.
