I had over a hundred on VHS at one point-got rid of them all and want to replenish my collection of "gay" oriented movies...I'm way behind and have only bought "Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert". What I am dying to get is Maurice!!! I should write to the studio. Does anyone have, "Like it Is"? A british film I believe about a boxer...the cover and story sound/look intriguing..... p.s. its old but I watched Fortune in Mens Eyes last night-would like to see that remastered to DVD-good prison flick!! ------------------ "BAD SPELLERS OF THE WORLD UNTIE!"
I tend to be interested in more romantic films, so I recommend Boy's life and Beautiful thing. Boy's life is already out on dvd, although I heard that the transfer wasn't that great. Beautiful thing is out on dvd, but unfortunately not in America! I think that Maurice would make for a great dvd, especially if it received some sort of a SE treatment. One can only hope of course. Also, I hope that Paul Verhoeven's classic, the 3rd man , makes it to dvd some time in a non dubbed version with his commentary. It should be noted that this film boasts one of the sexiest church scenes around!
Boys Life was ok...I see theres a Boys Life 2 out now.....Beautiful Thing was good...and I think you mean The 4th Man....EXCELLENT! I have the video....its one of my all time faves-the story, filming, and eroticism! Great choice. What about Wild Reeds??
whoopsies.. I did mean to write the 4th man. :P Sorry. The film really is great! Even for it being made in 1979, (but released in the US in 84') the film is much more erotic than something that you would find now in gay cinema. I thought that Wild Reeds was a good film, although it was not solely a gay film. I also found that the girl in the film had some weird moods that were solely French.:P Hmmm.. on the same subject of France.. I wonder if the film Pedale Douce will ever be released in America. It was a sort of straight friendly gay comedy. I saw it in France in 96'... but I haven't heard any word of it being released here. Oh yeah.. the French actress Fanny Ardant is in it, for those of you wondering.
Didnt see or hear of that french film....you saw it in France? Nice... yea, I have to get on the ball and get some of these films....Wild Reeds looked like it couldve been a "nice" film.... Ever see For a Lost Soldier? I liked that one too! ;O)
Hey guys-- Sorry I've been so quiet lately! I quit my job, and have been having all sorts of life turmoil--but I'm still here, always here! My VERY favorite gay production isn't a movie, and it's never even been on VHS! It was a PBS production in the early 80's called The Fifth of July, an acclaimed Broadway play by Lanford Wilson. Richard Thomas plays young high school teacher afraid to return to work after getting paralyzed in the War. Jeff Daniels is his strong-but-silent-type lover. Their relationship was so special that for years it was my "ideal romance"... Maurice and Priscilla are both great movies; likewise Beautiful Thing... I haven't had a chance to see Boy's Life... Somehow most of mainstream Hollywood's gay stuff hasn't done alot for me. I like Jeffrey and In and Out all right, I suppose, but both seem pretty shallow, even for comedies. And "issue" movies, like Philadelphia, though they've got their heart in the right place, still seem pretty one-dimensional and preachy to me...
Mikey-check out TRICK! You'll like it I think.... (as you guys can see I'm stirring up this board-I was real busy for a while-stupid freelance work!-but I'm getting back and want this board to be really good!)
I have a lot of gay movies on DVD. My favorite is Beautiful Thing. I just got a Raite which can play region 2 PAL discs, so I have ordered BT. I haven't gotten it yet so I'm not sure how it's going to look converted to NTSC by the player. For dramatic films I really like Like It Is and Boy's Life 1 and 2. Like It Is is a good drama without getting too heavy like gay cinema has a tendency to do. It also has a great transfer and a featurette. The Boys Life transfers aren't that great but the stories are good. Wild Reeds is also a very good film. It's a Fox Lorber release so the presentation isn't the best but it doesn't hamper the enjoyment of the film. The Dutch film To Play or Die is also interesting. My favorite gay comedy on DVD is Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss and Priscilla. Both are more mainstream so the DVD presentation are very good on both.
Beautiful Thing was great! Saw most of the others you mentioned-except I've been wanting to get Wild Reeds and Like it Is (how is that one?) OH! I just saw "Get Real" last week-REALLY GOOD! I'm dying-although not truly gay-to get Pee Wees Big Adventure!!! I know you are but what am I? Thanks for the comments-I'll have to pick up Wild Reeds. I also saw one listed as Broadway Damage?! Anyone see it?

Like It Is is very good. In case you aren't familar with the plot it is about a guy in his early twenties who decides it's time to give being gay a shot. One night he timidly goes to a gay club. He is unable to go in but he meets a guy who will turn out to be his first boyfriend. It is the story of his first relationship and his boyfriend finally finding the value of love. This is the third gay movie I owned after Priscilla and BT. It was BT and Like It Is that got me thinking that I should give into what I've felt for ten years and stop thinking that the only option for me was being alone since I knew I wasn't straight. Like It Is is an important movie for me because I'm sort of going through the same thing right now and feel the same way he does. I think you should pick this one up. It is entertaining and thought provoking without being preachy. I think it is the type of movie you can watch many times. I really enjoyed watching it with the first person who knew I am gay. I really like watching gay movies with other gay guys. I think it adds a lot to the experience. I watched Boys Life with two gay friends and it was a lot more interesting because they told me about their experiences which were similar to the characters in the films. I also have Broadway Damage. It's pretty funny. Not my favorite gay comedy, but worth seeing.
Hey Tintin! I'm definitely going to pick that one up! You must be younger....I see youre at home, etc Hey whatever you do dont let things get you down! I felt at one time that I was the "only" one out there-this was when I was going to school, had a hard time meeting people, went through some rough times but made it through! FYI-I've been with my lover for 11 years now!!! I'm 37 (but look alot younger) and dont regret anything......anyway....just watch out for the a-holes out there....and dont "fall" for anyone unless you know its right..... p.s. Did you see Get Real? I forget...check it out..you'll like it I think!
I watched Get Real last night. I really liked it. I feel just like those two guys. I feel like a fraud and am generally very angry but I hide it well most of the time. I live in California and things like prop 22 don't help any. I found someone to help me out on the BT forum and it evolved into something else, but that is a long story. If you're curious I could tell you about it some time. BT, Get Real and Like It Is are very similar. They have a similar plot and relationship just with a different degree of "hardness" (not in the hardcore sense). Get Real is a little more intense than BT and and Like It Is is more intese than Get Real. I think all three are excellent movies. Congradulations on your long term relationship. That was one of my biggest concerns with being gay. There don't seem to be many couples who have been together for long. Gay men have a reputation to wander. I thought if it's just going to be temporary, why bother? It's good to hear about someone who's made it.

Hi Tintin - I honestly don't know where gay men got the 'wandering reputation'. I assume it's from homophobes who wanted to blame someone for diseases like AIDs. I used to live in San Fran - most of my gay friends had (still have) long-term boyfriends. Two are getting married shortly (fuck prop 22.) It's all age and mental/ physical situation - just like being straight
Tin-hope youre still watching this board! Thanks for the note! I was definitely going through what you are back in my younger days...I'm not really that old now-37 but act 12 half the time! ha ha I have to admit I was one of those wanderers at one point-I grew up in a small country town and felt like the only one in the world...moved away and when i saw what was out there...look out! haha.but life and love go on and we always seem to pull through...our ups and downs!!!! Anyway-guess this isnt the place for all this... but glad you liked Get Real...I really enjoyed all of these films we mentioned so far. p.s. heres a joke that cracked me up today.....its for work........."This isnt an office...its hell with flourescent lighting!" hahahahahaha that kills me!!! ------------------ "BAD SPELLERS OF THE WORLD UNTIE!"

YES IT IS - this is the place where you can talk about whatever you want. And since we have such a great little group it's perfect to talk about more intimate things. So we have DVD in the name - there is only so much DVD you can talk about. I think there's more discussion about fake boobs in the Adult DVD Talk forum than DVDs netguy - I did the same thing as you when I first moved to Berkeley. So many men - only seven days in a week. It's a great phase to go through (dangerous but fun.) It also makes it a lot easier to settle down - sewin' the wild oats is more than a bad cliche I do wish that both men and women would be more honest when going through the all fun phase. "This is a one night stand. This is only a one night stand. No I will not call tomorrow (unless of course you're really great.)"
Hey Steph!!! I hear you! Thank god I've been in a good relationship for a while now! But I still remember the bullshit back then.....I'll never forget my first time was in college, met this really cute guy and spent most of the night in his dorm room...anyway the next day i went back to visit him and he says, "What are you doing here? I dont want people to see you here... we had our fun!" Was I fucking crushed or what!!! I will never forget that!!!!! Bastard! we should start a new topic if we're going to continue on these lines??? you think? ------------------ "BAD SPELLERS OF THE WORLD UNTIE!"
I have been with my better half for almost seven years! Even after 7 years it still feels like the first month!! I can't believe how fast time goes by when you are having fun!
