Does anyone know if the new HD-DVD players will play all the regular DVD's that I now own.

Initially, some will and some won't. Eventually, it's probably a good bet that all will (similar to how nearly all new DVD players also play DVD-A and SACD's).

Depending on which format wins the battle, new players will probably be retro-active with respect to playing 'old' DVDs.

Hopefully it will be like a PS / PS2 issue.

Not trying to change the subject here but since the topic of HD-DVD players has been brought up: I'm wondering if any or all of the models will have component out jacks or just DVI/HDMI.

They should have both, but in recent visits with electronic associates (I am a vendor rep) they say component is kinda on its way out in the next 5 years, not sure if I believe them.

The two different HD formats will force manufactures to purchase both technologies and we will have to see who wins. Similar to DTS/Dolby Digital, it is possible there might not even be a winner.

As always though the consumers are the biggest losers having to buy their same favorite movies over and over.

From reading some of the articles on various sites, maybe a compromise on the formats will have to be reached. Both camps have invested a lot into this venture and if one wins out over the other, who knows what will happen? (Same as with DVD-R and DVD+R, I suppose)

I'd guess that eventually we're going to get players (or recorders) that will be compatible with all the formats, both present and future (at least on the high end) and since the discs seem to all be the same size, we won't have to throw away our existing collections.

At least, that's my opinion..............

I hope you are right Cykedout about the comprise. I guess I want not clear on the re buying the movies point. I was referring more to the fact that if you want the same movies that you have re mastered and in the new Highest quality available and usually with new features i.e. Special Edition, new commentary etc. You WILL have to buy again, but they are the same size so you will be able to play your old collection.
