I am a fan of 80's and 90's porn, when I worked at the local Video store one summer we must have rented twice than the main stream stuff hands down every week, while trying to pick up some of the classic stuff I came to realize that there really is not allot of it out there, So I was wondering waht happnens to the VHS and original prints of this stuff? I have hate to think it just get's destroyed or is left to decompose on some shelf somewhere. And is the market trying to save this stuff or re-release it? Retrogoboy

There's still a collector's market for features shot-on-film from the early to mid 80s, some of them are being restored and reissued in special releases by Video X Pix, but outside of a few titles from the late 80s (Leslie, Silvera, Stagliano, Collins) I don't think there's much interest in the stuff shot on video except for those with a thing for specific performers.

Loretta Sterling (Ed De Roo) put out a lot of things that I've been interested in, but I don't find very much of it. What happened to Loretta/Ed anyway? Is he still among us? XO Mindee
Is this really an issue? From what I see the majority of the stuff worth talking about from the 90s and much of the 80s is on DVD...and often at cheap prices.
There have been other threads on this, so it might be good to search back for some of it. From what I gathered though. Studios used to release a set amount of tapes and sell them to various retailers, usually adult bookstores and the corner adult video or family video stores. Once that amount was sold, they'd either produce more or discontinue them. A lot of films from the 80's & 90's were, and still are, discontinued. Some of them have been eventually re-released on dvd as someone else mentioned. Some are still being slowly re-released. A large percentage are probably gone forever though, which is a shame. Maybe the new digital and computer will bring more back, but I'm not betting on it.
Lot of them get reused for compilations. They take scenes from various movies and repackage them into 4 hr compilation dvds usually with some particular theme or just a best of so-and-so compilation. Some old movies are being sold by VOD sites that just ripped the VHS or DVD to hard drive and then they stream the video to customers. I suspect a lot of those movies are "orphaned" meaning the original copyright holder is defunct or not enforcing the copyright anymore. Alphablue archives sells a lot of old 70s and 80s movies on dvds. But they have been sued at least twice for selling copies of movies they didn't own the copyright for. Then there are collectors who trade copies of old movies probably. If it was not for the tube sites some old scenes may have been lost forever.
Is there any websites or webshops that sell classic VHS tapes still, I know Movies Unlimited did for a time but not anymore.also any sites where you can download classic VOD titles?
Thanks daddyhek, I use to work in a video store in the 80's where all of this stuff was there for the taking and now it's all gone....if only I knew. At any rate I will have to make a list and post it. It is my hope that VCA, Caballero, Vivid, and others will see posts like these will prompt more Classics to be released on dvd. Retrogoboy
Retrogoboy... I pretty much got them all. Our inventory is vast to where u might want to put out a list. the bigger the list the better chance of us having it available... the more reasonable we can be !! I'll even throw in "vhs to DVD" software on us!!!
^ Does your collection/inventory go back to the Kay Parker, Candida Royalle and Sue Nero era? I know today's fans want and are used to the picture sharpness of DVD but for some of the old stuff from the late 70s-early 80s I'd be just fine with VHS quality picture.
I can Look but it goes back good ways... just havent been thru all 30k! even have some beta porn! but I will check for you and get back to you asap! the whole hang up is that we lost our inventory list so we have to go thru box after box etc.!!
Whoa!! Don't go out of your way for me. I was just curious. I thought you had a master list and could answer offhand. Besides, there's only a select few movies from that era I have an interest in. No need for you to dig through a ton of movies just to answer my question.
Interesting thread! I too have been searching for some old titles from the '80s and '90s but came up empty. One of the series I really enjoyed for its traditional camera work and very normal girls without the cheesy props, was the My First Time series. #9 was my favourite, it came out around 1998 or 99 and doesn't come up in any of the searches I've done. I have a few other faves as well but am having trouble remembering their titles. This was all VHS stuff.
That is a lot of movies. I have one piece of advice for you. If you have any Traci Lords (or Kristie Nussman, which was the name on her fake IDs) tapes in that collection, never admit to it. She was found to be 15 and 16 when she made them (she had a fake ID and birth certificate that she parlayed into a US Passport). She made movies in 1985-1988. Just possessing her movies can get you ten years in same sex ass-fuck land (otherwise known as prison).
Great thread! thanks OP. I have been lucky enough to find some rare gems in my local Adult Movie store, for example "The Girl From S.E.X." starring Lisa De Leeuw for $9.99 CAN (the clerk was quite jealous of my find at the time). You never know what oyu can find in the bargain bins if you take the chance to look. I am interested in most everything from Raven Touchstone, Dark Bros. and have a particular interest in everything Jim Holliday; Blonde Brigade, Brown Eyed Blondes, Sorority Sex Kittens 1,2,3 etc. Great to sit back for the night and enjoy an old classic with a drink and so on... Unfortunately, as was mentioned earlier the best resource for 'classics' is the torrent route. Would be nice however to have some of in DVD format, updated and with a clear picture.
toots...if ur referring to VHS when u say Classics....Im ur guy! hit me up with some titles and Ill check my private collection to see if I can match any up for ya!!!
cimfan.... I have "my first time" vol. 6 but ive only gone thru 1/30 of my entire collection. so chances of me havin other volumes are really good! shoot me some other titles as they come to ya!!!
my other observation is that the old titles don't have a long shelf life allot of there re-released classics are being discontinued, is this due to a lack of intrest for more classics, has the golden era run it's course?? retroGOboy
