As would I generally, but I'd simply prefer not to have to. I don't think there has to be an all or nothing ultimatum when it comes to the way scenes are edited or their time length. I don't care care so much if its 7 minutes or 40 minutes, I just want it to flow well, be shown well, and be hot. I would also prefer to keep my hand off the fastforward button during a scene.

^ Well, if life were perfect no one would have to fastforward through anything and they'd enjoy everything they see on screen. But since we're all different and have different tastes and preferrences it's impossible for a director to make a one size fits all scene with a length that would make everyone happy.
So much of it depends on what's happening on the screen. Sometimes I think that 40 minute scene is great and sometimes a 15 minute scene seems to go on way too long.
But I still maintain I'd much rather prefer too much than too little. It would be nice if I didn't have to fastfowrd but it's really not that big a deal if I have to or want to.

I agree that you have a lot more variety today than you did in the 70's and 80's but most of the stuff you are talking about is still mostly all gonzo porn. It just happens to star performers that fall under a specific body type ie girls with big breast, girls with big butts, black girls, white girls and so or is centered on one specific sexual fetish like oral, anal, dp. IR an so on. Some of the porn is so identical that the same girl who starred in a big butt movie is also stars in an anal one.
Porn made in the 70's rarely targeted a specific market probably because there wasn't really that much of a demand or possibility. Not too mention that unless you shot loops and stag films then you were doing feature films.

I would agree that porn in the 70's rarely targeted specific genres. Everything, more or less, was just simply added to the feature film. Whether it was anal, BDSM, etc. Well there is way more variety now though.

I haven't visited this thread in a while. As far as the influence of MTV goes, I suppose that is true, but since the directors of those music videos basically stole their style from Laugh-In maybe the latter should get the credit.

^Of course there is a good chance that most people reading this thread will have no idea what laugh in was. It's for sure that most of MTV's viewers never saw Laugh in.

^If you grew up in the 80's then you're probably over 30 and possibly closer 40. So of course you'd know about Laugh in. I was mostly talking about people who were born less than 30 years ago.

^ I believe LAUGH-IN used to play reruns on NICK AT NITE during the 90s. And just like with 70s porn I imagine people of later generations looked at it and wonder what all the fuss is about.

I couldn't tell you about that and although people might be able to identify the name of the show. I'm not so sure that they could give a description of the actual content.

^Absolutely. 70s porn is well before my time and I'm considered a neophyte with only a 100 movies or so to date (more tomorrow) under my belt. However I'm very much enjoying my time exploring the 'Golden Age' classics as well as the 'grindhouse' 'roughie' sexploitation movies of this era.

I will be returning to read ALL the replies in this topic. I just wanted to briefly say what came to mind without being influenced by the earlier responses.
It seems to me that what is produced, today, is very predictable. Many, many scenes have a "recipe" of plug in anyone to the scene and 1, 2, 3, end, repeat again and again. There is not much of a plot (for lack of a better term), nowadays.
Not all, but many of the females have had so much surgery that they really have no semblance to a real girl. They almost look like a man-made robot or doll. Not many Annette Haven's to be found anymore. I cannot remember the blonde actress who was simply beautiful when she started, then after many surgeries (too many total and bad technique) I saw a picture of her and did not recognize or realize it was her, anymore. That was very sad, indeed.
Although porn may not be the source for humor during the main scene, there use to be some humor that was truly funny. Ron Jeremy was funny at the right time, Joey Silvera was at times, and John Leslie. Now, it seems like guys especially are really into themselves and are afraid to be themselves or have humor come their way. Maybe they just don't have a sense of humor.
Now, it always seems to be about the guy and the gotta self-jerk ending. No matter what the scene is portrayed as, it is about the guy having to be in control. The females seem to be used until the end, then she is supposed to sit there, be still, and get jerked on. Predictable and boring. When the female is a 50% or greater part of the ending, it is much more exciting, unpredictable, and better resulting cumshot, every time, guaranteed (unless she is zonked out on something and detached from what is occurring).
There does not seem to be much of an attitude of "let it flow". Meaning, not much of a natural flow between those in a scene. I don't know if it is too much directing and trying to force things along and fit into a time allotment, or not. But, scenes seem to be 5 minutes of BJ, 3 minutes one position, change 3 minutes another, change, self-jerk on her face, end. Oooookay. Every scene does not need like the same parts in the same order. Can a scene have only 1 or 2 positions? Maybe give those involved the general idea, some references to consider and let them go. Stopping or interrupting only when necessary. There may be places to edit LATER, but do it later. Let them flow as naturally as possible. Don't click the stopwatch and yell, "Switch".
Maybe the problem is men being the directors. I don't know. Are there many women directors that make porn that is not soft or something. I can only think of Candida Royalle and Anna Span, at the moment, as I know there are more. Maybe that would help? There have to be some successful porn actresses like Jill Kelly and Jenna Jameson who have production companies and know what has transpired in the genre and what is overdone and what is desired.
Trying to be more outrageous or shocking doesn't seem to be the answer to success. I am not sure how far unbelievability goes. Just personally, I have no interest in the way women seem to be used, abused, gagged until there eyes are uncontrollably watering, almost jerking out hair, and simply a thing and not treated as a lover to be pleased. Maybe I am out of touch, but I don't really know any women who would desire to be treated like that, much less stand for it. I realize that it is a movie. No one dies in a war movie or in a car wreck in a car chase movie, but maybe these titles are intended as an far escape fantasy from reality. I don't think they should not be made. If someone signs a contract to appear in a scene, that is totally their prerogative.
Man, if I could win that Power Ball....or maybe not. I might be the biggest flop in that attempt!
Thanks for posting this topic. I will go back and read all the replies, and probably learn something that I had not considered.
Thanks

^I'm with you on most of what you said. The only big exception is in regards to todays directors being almost all men. I don't know if there was one female director in the 70's or 80's (maybe Candida Royalle) but all the great porn classics were directed by men so quality is clearly not a question of male vs female. I just think that the directors, the performers and most people involved with porn were more talented than todays crop. Of course having to shoot on film vs digital camera may have a lot to do with it. Anyone with a decent camera can and often does shoot porn. Shooting on 35mm film requires a very specific set of skills and a small fuck on digital is cheap but on film it isn't.

^ Roberta Findlay, Gail Palmer, Svetlana, to name three. If you change "director" to "filmmaker" then you can add Helene Terrie. I haven't included the women who only made one or two films.

The most interesting about this thread is reading people's memory and preceptions about those movies. Like I said, I'm far from an expert of that era of porn but I've seen and have movies from that era and I'm remembering seeing plenty of "self jerk endings". Also, I remember reading in a few places about one male pornstar who's biggest claim to fame was that he was a stunt cock who got plenty of work by coming in and supplying the climax for guys who couldn't deliver the goods. I also remember a few scenes where there wasn't any money shot at all.
I'm not claiming this always happened but I've seen it more than a few times. I'm sure the people here with all the positive memories are perhaps talking about the best of the best of that era and those movies were as great as they say but most of the stuff I've seen from that era falls short of what's being described in this thread. I'm not being negative for the sake of being negative but most of the stuff I've seen from the 70s isn't as good as what some are making it out to be. I also don't think today's stuff is as bad as some are making it out to be. I know much of it is opinion but I just read what's being said here and wondering how I see things so differently.

^ I'm not relying on memory. Well, I guess memories from a week ago, or a couple of years ago perhaps. But not memories of my distant youth spent in porn cinemas. I also can tell you I have seen a lot of really bad porn from the 70s and early 80s (the golden age). However, there really are tons and tons of fantastic films. I haven't run out yet - and trust me, I had a moment of panic last week when I worried I had run out. I hadn't seen a great golden age movie in a while, and though with horror, "maybe I ran the well dry...?!" Thankfully, I was wrong.
As for self-jerk finishes, in my own experience there are fewer in old porn, and I think this is probably to do with Viagra, Cialis, et al. Side note, but related: while not common per se, there are a number of no-hands finishes in old porn, a good portion of them courtesy of my man John Leslie. That's always a fun surprise.

^ You seem to prefer that genre of porn in general and accept it for what is was and probably embrace it's shortcomings (or at least what I see as shortcomings). I get that. It's the comments that comprare today's stuff to the 70s stuff and make claims that are blanket statements that make it sound like the 70s stuff was all shot by great directors who made all great stuff while today's stuff is shot by people who just happen to have a camera and don't have a clue. That the women back then were all such natural beauties while all today's women are surgical nightmares that are interchangable. Apparently all the sex was superior back then too and somehow performers don't know how to have sex thses days. The stories were so well written in those days but today's stories are just horrible. So much great stuff in the 70s but now there's just bad porn. All the stuff was sensual back then but it's just rough demeaning sex today.
I'm exaggerating there but not much. I know people tend to compare what they like and choose the best to compare to the worse of what they don't like to try and make their claim but it's not a fair or accurate comparison. I acknowledge there was some good stuff from that era but from what I've seen it wasn't all good by any means and there some bad stuff from this era but there's plenty of good stuff. Stuff that I feel that's superior to to the 70s stuff by a long shot in many ways.

There is plenty of horrible stuff from the 70s too. It wasn't all great. However, much of what has survived to still be seen is good. I suspect the same will happen with todays stuff in 40 years.

Bob Chinn ghost-directed most of Palmer's work.
There were a few more female directors out there with Anne Perry being one of the major ones. It was also recently revealed that Lisa Barr was indeed a woman. Suze Randall also made many loops and a few features.

Here are the major differences, as I see them (of course, there are exceptions):
1) Most of the more prolific directors in the 70's and 80's were serious filmmakers who ended up in the XXX film world for some reason or another. As a result, many bigger budget XXX features made pre-1986 have the feeling of a normal movie that just happens to have hardcore sex. Today, 'features' seems to be a niche genre where the presence of a storyline often feels like a gimmick or marketing ploy. Minimal attention is usually paid to the artistic qualities of the work.
2) Many of the actors [gender inclusive use] were ACTORS and some even had training. As others have mentioned, being a star in X rated movies actually meant something and carried with it a degree of legitimate fame and notoriety. Today, even actors who do possess acting talent (of which there still many) are not treated as ACTORS.
3) Running time and budgetary constraints factored into the way many films in the 70's and 80's were made. It was typically cost prohibitive to make a film that ran much longer than 80 min, and producers often preferred shorter running times because XXX features were typically shown as double features and needed to fit into a 3 to 3 and a half hour time slot, including trailers. Filmmakers were therefore forced to squeeze complete narratives into roughly 50 min, to leave another 25-30 min for sex. Today, most 'features' run 2+ hours but still typically include 50 min of plot, max.
4) Sex scenes were treated as an integral part of the film. Not as something that could/should be extracted from it and viewed as 'scenes.' Actors were usually obliged to stay in character during the sex. Today's sex scenes in features are unfortunately often made into overly-long loops that stick out like sore thumbs from the scant storylines. Therefore, watching extracted sex scenes from 70's/80's features is more or less an insult to the filmmakers.

I wonder if a lot of todays porn that survives the next 30 plus yrs does so more because the technology allows it and less because it has any real merit. People may complain about porn made in 70's and 80's but a lot of it is still around and it certainly isn't because of technology. In fact we have lost many movies to time because no one ever bothered to transfer the movie to a different medium when they had the chance.

Well said and I agree with you. I'd debate whether all that equals superior porn but that all depends on personal tastes and what the viewer wants from their porn. Some of the things you see as positives I see as negatives.

Four excellent points.
Also, shooting a movie on film, editing it and then releasing it on film (which meant costly prints) presented a financial threshold that most wannabees could not muster.
This kept most of the really bad stuff from being created in the first place.
Compare this to today's bane of "visionaries," with a handheld camera, a home computer and an internet connection, flooding the market with sub-standard product that competes head-to-head against the professional studios, producers and directors.
I think the best of today's porn is as good as it ever has been.
It is much more suitable to whacking to than ever.
The A/V technical quality, alone, also makes it more enjoyable.
But, the Golden Age on film was a wonderful time.
I would kill to be able to see Golden Age titles, as released on DVD, that capture the look and quality that the films had in the theatres.
I haven't seen one yet that does.
But, this is almost entirely due to the inferior source-quality of what remains of the original films today :(
So, for those who never saw porn shot on film shown in real theatres (and I mean real theatres -- not the Tiki Theater), please don't judge the Golden Age by the remains we are still able to glimpse on VHS and DVD today.

Is that true?
I just watched Dave's Old Porn with my favorite from the era Ginger Lynn and one of my fav dudes atm Joe Rogan for his comments on Bill Hicks, dope, and UFC. And both Joe and Ginger feel exactly the same way I do.
Firstly Ginger was so playful today, dunno how anybody as Joe said would not be hard as steel even just being around her back in her prime. Anyway during the discussion they said..
Ginger - "Worship your cock".. Exactamundo!
Joe - "Why is it so different, so violent today?".. Exactamundo!
Ginger reply - "There is no passion".. Exactamundo!
and "There is no leadup.. on the plane, on the way there, before every scene I was excited. There was a buildup, there was a turn on, there was no wham bam thank you Mam"
I feel this thread drifted off course a bit onto the subject of plot. That was never the topic I wanted to discuss, only want to discuss the sex. The difference in the sex performed back in the 70/80s with today's porn.
* As I said in the beginning is it the changing role/power of women in society today that brings out the male aggression? Is what coolfonz said true, is this prevalence a reflection of today's society and the roles and relationships between men and women?
* Perhaps is a factor is that unlike producing a full movie then, today is producing individual commoditized scenes that can both be sold on a dvd and individually over the internet. As Ginger said removing any leadup, excitement and passion just arrive strip/suck/fuck/facial leave.
* Another consideration, perhaps a contributing factor that with so much porn today and the constant problem of not enough male talent that these guys having to perform half a dozen scenes a day have to skull-fuck and jack-hammer to get the job done. In the Louis Theroux doco one guy talked about 12 or 14 pops on a single day.
Last thing on the topic of the facial then cut to black screen. I can't find it again now, but sure somewhere in there was said by Ginger that the start of the cumshot is not the end of the scene eg when she stops, and by Joe and again something I agree with that her still rocking her body like she was cumming during and after a doggy ass-back cumshot was very hot!
