Currently, what's the best one when it comes to selection and organization? I hear 300 book center is good. I'm visiting there soon and I thought I'ed check in on some of them.
I like the one at 48th and 8th everything is organized according to studio,so it's easy to find what you're looking for if they have it.Empire dvd at 33rd between 5th and Broadway is ok,Entertainment Outlet at 14th between 6th and 7th has alot of the Barely Legals for 11.99.Across the street,farther up,is a pretty good porno dvd shop with good prices,this map shows the location of both stores. Thanks guys. Turned out I didn't have the courage to go in any of them, though I did walk by them. It's very intimidating when there are women and kids all around.

I got a secret for you...none of them give a shit what you do (as long as you don't do anything that hurts them). So just go ahead and do what you want to do (unless that includes hurting one of the women or kids).
Actually, those guys are Sri Lankans (clue -- they're related to, and look alot like, Indians). That store has some of the best deals but alot of street life hang around outside and it can be unpleasant. The store itself is also cramped and poorly ventilated. but at least they don't sell new release duplicates like the places around the corner.
The best stores were on 42nd street itself and of course they're all gone. There's a good place on 36 street between 8 and 9. Then there are two really good places on fourteenth street: between 6 and 7 aves and between 2 and 3 aves.
I remember the first time I hit up Porn shops in New York City, back in 98, when I had a room at the Marriott near Times Square. Now here in LA we always had our fair share of porn shops, and strip joints, but I always had heard about the "New York style peep shows". Well, we had those here too, little $5 stalls, with the glass windows for the private dancer, similiar to Vegas, a town I a;ways felt lived up to its "Sin City" reputation. I found it interesting to check out, and compare different porn\live nude shops, whenever I'd travel to various cities on business, and had some free time to burn.
So anyway, I took a stroll down Broadway, to check out a couple porn shops, I spotted looking down from the windows of my room, and found that one shop, had booths on the 2nd floor, with a dude checking ID's before you were allowed up. At the top, I learned they were actually private dance booths, and remember thinking to myself, "Ok, finally I'll see what a New York Style peep show is all about". Inside it looked similiar to what I'd seen before, but the window was somewhat smaller, and at the moment, was a reflective mirror. So I put $2 in the machine, and suddenly the the mirror rolled aside, to reveal a room with 3 dancers.
I was awestruck, as the one who stood directly in front of me, was a lithe blonde beauty, but dunbfounded, and completely blown away, with the fact, that there wasn't ANY FREAKIN GLASS! NO GLASS? She turned to reveal a truly spectacular ass, then slowly bent over, and literally pushed it through the MF'n window!!! Now I knew where I was, and the tongue never left the mouth, but oh lord, before Giuliani came to town, I'll be the first to say, New York City was without question, far and away, the undisputed, King of the Smut Shops!!
Empire Dvd is a porno dvd shop,but they have mainstream dvds in the front,so unfortunately some unknowing parents bring their kids in lookng for dvds,it's always cringeworthy when the kids wander over to the hentai videos and the parents tell them to get away from 'em quick.Entertainment Outlet is a regular dvd shop,but their porn isn't segregated at all,so the same thing happens there too.
Peter, I know what you mean...I have to be in the "right" mood myself to go into the ones on 8th av....I have been followed in there from guys from outside. Well, that's if I go early...the doors are open...the weather is nice....if I go in the middle of the night....it's a different vibe and nobody strolls in to follow me. I like to go to all of them until I find the best deal. lol. I go into about three of them on 8th between 43rd and 48th.
spent some of yesterday walking 8th hitting just about every porn shop. 300 XXX DVD in the stairwell at 40th and 8th was the best of the bunch. It's not perfectly organized, nor does it have everything, but it had premium titles for the lowest price.
right now you can get 3 RLD (and a few other studios - PXP, DVSX?) for $50. Great prices on private box sets and erotic media dvds too.
But I still think ordering from the fine merchants affiliated with ADT is your best bet.
Just an update on this. I visited NYC last month. I was dismayed to find that many of my old porn DVD haunts on 8th Ave below 34th Street had been demolished! However, persistent foot-slogging brought rewards and I can recommend Vishara Video, 797 8th Ave (somewhere around 50th Street I think). This has a huge selection but the titles are not very well organised and it can take quite a while to find what you want. The staff aren't too helpful either! A few blocks lower down on the same side of the street there is Deluxe DVD which has a basement adult section. This doesn't have such a huge range of titles but the main studios are well represented and the most popular titles are stocked. The staff here are exceptionally friendly and helpful. This will be my first stop next time. Prices are about the same in both places but some Private titles at Deluxe were selling for around 7$. Most new and new-ish releases ranged from about 20 to 30$.
Theres no shortage of shops on the 40s on 8th Ave. Thats where i get all my porn. Prices are better than the internet, about $20 each. I've seen places around the country that sell new releases for about $40 each!! Theres one thing that you can get for cheaper in ny.
