I understand what Myk is getting at - watching a typical gonzo porn scene, in a film that is not advertised as a rough sex title, but then suddenly seeing an actress getting her face or breasts repeatedly slapped, or seeing her being spit on.
I've willingly watched some rough sex movies, and I haven't been annoyed when any of these things happen, because that's what you would expect to see. But it's when I want to watch just a regular gonzo title, and then this stuff comes at the viewer unannounced, that it gets jarring.
The latest example for me was watching Digital Sin's Erotica XXX 3. This is a gonzo title that is supposed to be just a tad more classy than the typical movie. I specifically wanted to see the two Nacho Vidal scenes, and I expected, for once, to see him not slapping the actresses around, since this was definitely not a rough sex title.
Guess what - he still slapped their faces a good 20 times each. Basically, he wasn't any different than when he's in a rough sex film. So much for my naive expectations. Interestingly, no other actor in the movie slapped an actress' face.
The least the studios could do is advertise this stuff on the boxcover, so you know to avoid it - but we all know how accurate boxcover copy is....
On the other hand, in two of the rough sex films I've watched, there were scenes that weren't all that rough, and could easily have been in a middle-of-the road title. The whole fascination of rough sex is because it's taboo. Especially the first times you see it. The same goes for other stuff too. Obscenity is not the main point of this thread, but it has been alluded to. It was pointed out that it is improper to lump rape and rough together as they can appear separately or together. Also rape themes have just about disappeared from mainstream porn (for the worse as I said earlier in the thread) due largely to obscenity prosecution concerns (taste of consumers might also play a part).
