some people like hard images on the front, some like soft on the front. what do you like? more hard images on the back or less? what makes you pick up one box and not the other, is it the star who's in it? Is it the title or genre? Do you like over covers?

I don't have any real preferences, but when I was working doing stock in an adult shop I really appreciated any companies that used reversible hard/soft covers. And if over covers are those card board sleeve things I do not like them. They often fit so tight that it is difficult to use them without damaging the corners. I generally pick based on studio, cast, director and genre however a nicely done softcore cover will pull me in quicker than a hardcore cover. Plus as I wrote in this recent thread, with the current regulations many sites aren't showing hardcore covers or blurring them all to hell, which doesn't help pull my interest. An example of what pulls me in from one of the companies that you represent is Possessed & Undressed. It's a nice looking cover that pulls your eyes to it but doesn't look sleazy.
I can go either way on hard or soft images on the front. One of my favorite covers is for "Best of Britain." It has a girl taking anal reverse cowgirl, and you can see everything. Definitely hard images on the back. I like to see if it includes acts I like to watch. The number one thing I look for is the star, and who else is in the film. Club Jenna's covers don't do much for me. Here are two threads that might help your research. Poll on 2007 Covers Poll on 2008 Covers. I only ask that the male cast be listed somewhere on the cover. That's how I make my viewing choices. The way Digital Sin/New Sensations does it, listing the actual scene pairings, is especially appreciated.
Personally, I am way beyond grabbing stuff off a shelf because it looks pretty. So generally I like covers that provide as much info as possible about what's in the movie.
^LOL The point I was making is that I buy titles based on who's in them, a hot pic of the featured star is going to make me pick it up, I them expect to turn it around and see some hardcore screen shots on the back. I guess this is pretty much what is standard.
My favorite ever box covers were those of the Fuck You Ass Whore series of old. Clearly dislpayed were each and every girl in the flick, bent over on the front cover.
+1 I've been burned by too many boxcovers which are outstanding works of art but are not representative of the video. Just give me a complete listing of ALL of the (female) performers, name of director/photographer, and back cover pics which are actual vidcaps from the movie. Explicit or tame, doesn't matter.

Three things make a great box cover. 1. There is a list of who all is in the movie somewhere on it. 2. That list is accurate. 3. The photos that are featured all over the box cover are from scenes that are actually in the movie.

+1 To which I will add: and please don't mislead us with those vidcaps. Too many times I have seen vidcaps on the box which are all mid-range (full-body) shots, and when I acquire and view the movie, it turns out that 95% of the sex scene footage is comprised of 6-inch closeups. I HATE closeups. So if you're emphasizing them in the movie, please show that on the cover.
Personally I prefer a good single image of one of the pornstars on the front cover. Elegant Angel, Diabolic, Anabolic, Evil Empire and Redlight District normally do this the best. Elegant Angel one's are some of the best. Velciity Von on the front cover of 'White Booty Worship' is one of their best examples. A really strong bold image, nothing else cluttering up the front cover, just beautiful Velicity and her amazing ass. Although I love everything Jules Jordan does I do not like his montage style boxcovers. I guess he doesn't want to express that one girl in the video is any more important than another, but I do wish they'd go with just one of the girls and have a much stronger bolder image on the cover. I do however love the back covers of JJ DVDs. You always know that the hardcore images you see are what you're going to see in the DVD. I want to see hardcore images on the back because I want to know the kind of thing I can expect if I haven't been able to view screenshots or trailers. The images shouldn't be too messy and their shouldn't be too many of them though. Also I like the girls names to be next to the pictures as sometimes it's hard to identify the less well known girls simply from a picture of their ass! Also, on another note, what makes a great boxcover is normally Brianna Love, Jenny Hendrix, Velicity Von or Courtney Cummz on the front. Brianna Love is probably the best boxcover girl out there. I only have to see her amazing ass on a boxcover and it makes me want to by the DVD. I'm not saying she should be the boxcover girl all the time, but 9 times out of 10 if Brianna is starring in your DVD you should put her on the front boxcover. Nothing says romance like anal sex.
My favorite cover from something recent (2005) was for something called Harlot with two soft-core images of Aurora Snow that were well-balanced with limited graphics on the front cover, then hardcore imagery and plenty of info on the back cover---B0B/The Film Snob
Softcore front for me, definitely. 1 or more of stars in sexy (ideally everyday rather than fetish) garb. Bent over is good. Gonna disagree with someone above as I think Jules Jordan's covers are usually amazing, also I'd rather see all the female stars than just 1. With the backs it is handy to have some hardcore stills to aid the purchase but if the DVD has a hard/soft reverse (as they often do) I flip it around to the soft when I've bought it. If I want to see the hardcore, I can stick the DVD on. The soft makes for a nice bit of tease before it goes on.
hollywood woody, what you need to do is crack open the wallet and get that chris streams guy to shoot the box covers, i hear people like the ones he does for zero and 3rd

The wallet is not really a problem, I'm not sure if they are studio shot or set shot. Not to speak negative about anyone, I know their boxes do well, but don't they all look alike? They seem to use a template and just change out the girl. Edited by - hollywood woody on 5/20/2008 11:25:03 AM
The boxes are shot on set. I don't think it's negative to say the all look a like, when for the most part they all look good. The company has a look they like and ask me to keep it within that style. My point being, nothing you put on the box is more important then the shot. If its not a top director with a loyal fan base the box better be hot or its likely to get passed over on the self. Hollywood , what happened to the photographer that shot all the Vivid box covers? Vivid has had some of the best photographer ever in porn. I used to get mad when you guys would put all kinds of graphics and type over the amazing photos of the girls.
I fancy Brianna Love's ass hasn't been on a boxcover in the last couple of week. What's the world coming too! Brianna's ass always makes a great boxcover as long as it's photographed well, but you can't really go wrong. She always looks best with her back to the camera slightly bent over, or sat on a chair or stool with her ample cheeks hanging over the edge. Nothing says romance like anal sex.
If Jenna Haze is on the cover that would be an excellent start. Their not hard to find seeing that Jenna is on the cover of everyone of her movies, beacause she's the best!
I have yet to use box artwork as criteria in a purchase over hte past 20 yrs. The disks could come in a box w duckies & bunnies on it for all I care, and I would still purchase based on online reviews, director, and onscreen talent.

Elegant Angel clearly has the best covers. Soft but sexy single girl covers with the women and director listed on the front. I would be nice if they put who the male performers were on the back or something. I much prefer the Elegant Angel covers to the montage style of JJ or Evil Angel. Oh yes, of course. I'd never (well, rarely) pick up ANY movie based on box alone. Usually if a film sounds intriguing I look it up and see what critics I trust have to say.
Vivid has the best covers, but most of their movies arent that good anymore. Sometimes there is an interesting title, but they released a lot of crap in the last 3 years. WICKEDs movies are muuuuuch better, the covers are sometimes minimalistic, but I dont like the trend of pornographic comedy. Or I dont understand the jokes. A cover should be an eyecatcher. JJs covers are eyecatchers, but if two dozen JJ movies are in a row, you almost get a headache. Hard images are very rare on US porn DVDs. It doesnt matter to me, if they are hard or soft, but covers should catch the feeling of the movie. It makes no sense presenting a gangbang or a standard porn with an art cover.
