It seems there are thousands upon thousands of pay sites out there. With the advent of piracy and free porn sharing sites, are all these sites really profitable enough to stay afloat, or have they taken a major hit like the DVD industry? I know there are people who became millionaires this way, but is that really still possible?

This is something I've wondered about. There are just so many sites, covering every obscure niche, yet only a limited market. I'm particularly curious about the sites set up by individual performers, are they profitable in themselves or mainly for promotion and advertising?
I've seen a couple of performers mention that they make decent money from their sites. Both of which sell merchandise and PPV video, and encourage fan interaction with chats and live webcam shows. Ways of still making money even if the rest of the site's content can easily be stolen. I assume that the performers are telling the truth, if they weren't then I doubt they'd put so much time and effort into them.
A lot of performers are less hands on with their sites, you just get a photoshoot every week or so and the occasional video. Unless you're an uberfanboy or completist porn collector, there isn't much incentive to keep paying once you've grabbed the existing content, or downloaded it illegally... I'd be very surprised if the money they bring in constitutes a significant proportion of the performers income. The only people I can see making much money from those sites are the webmasters and hosting companies who take a cut from dozens of them.

I highly doubt that there are thousands upon thousands of porn sites of varying levels of professionality if they weren't usually breaking even at the least.
The question is if they are making any real money out there and of that I'm not sure in the least. There are enough industry regulars around here though that hopefully what passes for a definitive answer will arrive. By which I mean somebody might give a hint that their personal website doesn't suck.

I'm not just talking about personal websites of stars. I'm talking about sites like Brazzers and others which feature different performers each week. For example, there are multitudes of sites catering to the Interracial or Milf themes. Do they all have enough recurring memberships to turn big profits?

I haven't a fucking clue, but... I've heard ridiculous rumors about our internet monopolies like Brazzers.com, NaughtyAmerica.com, RealityKings.com and others. Dare I say it? Millions?

The likes of Brazzers, NA, Bang Bros, RealityKings have a dozen plus sites and thousands of scenes - the majority of which are a higher quality than your average porn site. They will be much more profitable than a site with 20 scenes that updates once a month.
Then you factor in that with such high download speeds these days, a site with crappy resolution video or low bitrate video are going to be nowhere near as profitable as those mentioned above that offer at least one high quality resolution option.
I'd imagine it's like any other type of business. If you have a product of high quality then people will buy it. So the sites out there offering low quality, re-hashed content are far more likely to be earning no or less of a profit than those offering exclusive higher quality content such as Brazzers which I'd expect, as TJ says, are doing very well for themselves.

Well as far as the top names you mentioned. I'm sure they've got profits that have to range in the high thousands per month, I'd be guessing tens if not hundreds of thousands. But that's just a guess.
Generally speaking though people don't flood a market that has no money. There is a reason why there is a notary public in California for like every ten people. The is a reason why we had so many real estate agents (until very recently when they all became car salesmen *trust me I know this to be fact*) it's because there was lots of money and relatively easy money. With the amount of porn sites out there I imagine that a lot of the "little" fish are still doing at least breaking even.

Find a current posting on a forum somewhere where somebody is listing available usernames and passwords. There might be 20 or 50 u/pw combos for bangbus or reality kings or a similar site, and new listings are being posted every day. All of which should work until hundreds of teenagers begin simultaneously using them to try to break into the sites. I'd guess that these stolen passwords represent only be a tiny fraction of the working current passwords for those sites, a flake of snow on the tip of the iceberg of the total membership. That adds up to a lot of money. For those who don't want to waste time searching the net for free stuff, or who want to support the industry, monthly membership costs are good value for what is available for download, so thousands of people probably make the choice to join every month. While the sites are adding new content every day, much of that content consists of one guy with a handheld camera aimed at two or three people on a couch, and the post-production is so quick that often they don't bother to remove the cameraman's instructions to the girl, so their production costs are probably closer to those of local furniture store commercials than to an episode of a home decoration show on The Learning Channel. That spells profit to me, and probably still a good profit, although I'm sure the producers are frustrated at the realization that what they do make is only pennies on what they could be making if they were able to more tightly control access to their product.
But I'm just speculating. Even if they aren't making much cash, it looks like they're having more fun than I am, so I won't be organizing a telethon for anyone.

Actually to be a considered a "fact" you need to have some corroborating sources. Just saying "trust me" doesn't render a person's opinion true, it merely means that they hope you won't call them out for presenting an opinion as fact.
"Trust me I know..." on the internet translates to real life English as "gee, I am making this up, I hope you believe me".

Yeah, but don't most sites have anti-fraud measures that track your IP? They warn you when you join that logging in from multiple IP's will get your account canceled.

Well when Luke Ford had www.lukeisback.com up for sale he said that he made about $500.00, which is just a blog filled with a lot on unsubstantiated porn gossip.
I suspect that sites Brazzers, NA, Bang Bros, RealityKings pretty much like RLD, Evil Angel and Vivid without the distribution costs, which, if managed well, should be very profitable. I think a lot of the pornstar sites do not do well because the performers are, in the end just performers without a lot of business sense, which is why they stop being updated, sooner or later.

Honestly if I cared to write it all down I could practically confirm this. My profession is Livescanning (fingerprinter) both Real Estate and Car Salesmen come to me for their licenses. As a result I get to speak to a great deal of people in these feilds and there is a recent surge from point a to point b. But like you said I have no way of actually proving this to be solid fact, it also isn't particularly important to the conversation.
That said I can't imagine that the majority of porn sites aren't pulling in a profit. 500$ a month sounds pretty low though was that an average month after all expenses were paid? How much work was he putting into it. These are important questions.
