So much new content is being put out now in 1080p that it's affected my sense of what's decent quality. I look at 480p stuff now and can't believe we all considered that acceptable to view. Obviously, other elements factor in (such as bit rate), but I wonder what others think on this matter? Are you throwing out 480p stuff? Do you draw the line at 720p? Or, is the new threshold for catching your attention 1080p?
to me 720 is the low and 1080 is the hi. I keep 480p scenes that either have stars I like in them or something unique is going on. But for normal scenes 720 is acceptable. Its hard sometimes since there have been some great girls who have spent their entire careers in SD.
When it's a pornstar I'm very fond of, I'll always get 1080p or 720p if it's available. If it's somebody I have a casual interest in then 480p/540p is fine though I don't go below that resolution any more.
I barely notice the difference between 720 and 1080 watching TV and movies on a large (40+") screen. The largest screen I watch porn on is 24" and I sometimes watch on a tablet. Having 720/1080 is not important for me at that screen size.
I'm old school so any video that is 480 an above is more than fine and can be a significant blessing when compared to todays 1080P stuff that almost forces viewers to count all the pimples, razor burns and skin blemishes a girl has. I've lamented a few times in the past that todays porn producers probably don't use makeup artist on set anymore so what these people could once hide with proper application of makeup is now made visible and even more so in HD but I'm wondering if it would even be possible to hide all the skin blemishes from a high end HD camera. I know that I have downloaded plenty of great scenes that I simply can't watch anymore because my eyes area always being pulled toward those ass or pussy pimples.
480/540 is more than fine with me. Anything bigger just ends up taking up far too much space on external harddrives. I'll pass on anything lower than 480 tho (I'm looking at you Mofos).
^^ I concur with the comment about hard drive space. I can watch 360p (as long as I can clearly see the action without too much choppiness/pixellation it's fine with me) but 240p is unwatchable. Some sites (Blissbox.com being one) still sell downloads in 240p. Bought a few - waste of money.
Count me in the "480/540p is fine for most scenes" camp, especially after most sites moved from WMV to H.264 some years ago...WMV-encoded vids were pretty prone to artifacts and often didn't look that good when viewed larger than 100% even at high bitrates, but that's (at least subjectively) much less of a problem with modern encoding technology. I'll take 720p or 1080p if nothing lower is on offer (or the next-lower option is below 480), but I'm always tempted to re-encode them down to 540p and a lower bitrate to save space if it's something I plan to keep. It wasn't intended to be a poll but rather a question and answer about habits regarding screen resolution. Sites offering content currently seem to be of two varieties - those offering only older stuff maxing out at 480p and those offering 720p, 1080p and now 4k videos. I wonder whether consumers of the two are increasingly mutually exclusive and (as some have added) to what degree hard drive space and bandwidth considerations enter into the discussion.
I think bandwidth is a bigger consideration than HDD space. Many people just don't have the option of true broadband speeds, or don't want to pay a super-premium price just for maximum-speed internet service just to watch maximum-definition porn. As long as the picture is watchable and the action is clear, it doesn't matter much to me. I'm not willing to spend an extra hour to download something on SD vs. 720p vs. 1080p, unless the scene has some special significance to me (which would be rare).

^I suppose you're right. I take for granted the connection I have. I can download a 3 gig Brazzers scene in 2 minutes flat. That kind of speed is actually a double edged sword. It's great for gaming, but it forces you to be a little picky about the other stuff you download since HDD space doesn't grow on trees.
Although the higher the resolution the better, I find it's the content that decides on whether or not the resolution is acceptable. For example some WebCam amateur stuff knocking around or VHS quality 80s stuff is just as hot in my eyes to some 1080p mega expensive porn shoot. I'm not complaining about resolution at all, porn in all forms is great!
720p is acceptable, 1080p is pretty much what I expect and what I think should be expected. I can't wait for 4K, or more importantly, higher frame rates. Lower resolution I can tolerate for stuff that is not available in HD.
It depends on whether we're talking about streaming or watching a DVD. When I'm buying a DVD, I want BluRay quality. Streaming I care more about not having long buffering times. I have a pretty slow DSL connection.
For those of us residing in the more far-flung parts of the globe, decisions about screen resolution are still primarily concerned with what type of connection we can get. Most of my country still runs on copper wire with download limits, so even downloading a single 2-3 Gb file is an undertaking, especially when considering the frequent service interruptions (only one fibre-optic cable connects us to the rest of the world). Streaming is almost impossible once you go over 720p, and even that is a buffering nightmare. At the same time, getting your hands on the latest DVD's is always an interesting journey, as everything has to be ordered and shipped internationally, adding to the overall cost per item. So, more by circumstance than anything else, 480p will have to do for now.
I've never really been impressed with any hi-def porn. Maybe the cameras are simply crappy, but the detail just isn't there. Practically everything looks soft and compressed. I'm actually curious about what Brandon Iron used to shoot with. The footage is standard definition, but there seems to be so much detail that upscaling it still looks great.

I want the highest possible quality the sites allow. With a fibre optic internet connection that typically downloads at 4Mb/s and 6tb of HDD space, I can comfortably afford 1080p all the time, whatever the scene is.
I shot on a basic Sony DSR PDX-10. Nothing fancy. Was late to the full HD party but eventually got around to getting a better camera, Sony's HVR Z5U. Until recently, I had a slow broadband connection combined with a tight data cap, hence HD porn was merely an occasional luxury for me. However, now I have an unlimited fibre optic connection, I almost exclusively download HD content.There are already a couple of sites with 4K content. I've compiled a list here. Stuff below 480 I consider "unworthy" these days. When h.265 encoded videos become the norm, it'll possible to cram a lot more 720p/1080p content onto an average-sized hard drive. At the moment, the only porn site I know of that uses h.265 is Sin Drive, however they only use it for their 4K videos.
