If I wanted to move to the Van Nuys/Chatswoth area and find work in the production aspect of adult, where should I go and who should I talk to? I'll be attending next years AEE and the 2007 AVN Awards to meet people and get a feel for what the world of adult entertainment is really like. I was wondering what types of jobs are available, how often there is work, what are the rates of pay and does having no experience matter. If your primary motivation for getting into porn is to make real money, believe it or not, you can do it if you have a reasonable IQ and and some degree of common sense despite those who say there's no money in porn anymore. The industry will always need competent people who can deliver a good finished product. But like anything else, you have to know someone and/or work your way up. Take a job as a minion doing tedious tasks for little money but pay attention and learn the ropes.
Also, (this is just my opinion) do not seek work on the production side of porn if your only motivating factor is that you want to get laid by porn chicks. The great thing about working in adult isn't access to porn poon, it's being able to work in a very relaxed environment where you can actually have fun sometimes and not worry about punching a time card. Yes, it's nice to look at hot naked chicks every day but the novelty of that wears off after about 10 minutes.
Toby - You just got a good speil from one of the best, smartest and most entertaining shooters and director in the business. To reach his level of accomplishment you have to have his admirable experience and skill set. But I have to add to the naysayers in a way, since production, whether it's adult or mainstream can be a hard nut to crack. It's a very gypsy-like life with a feast or famine flow of paycheck's and ridiculously long on-set hours which preclude any normal sense of a social life. The money in either world can be pretty good, depending on your ability to find your niche, but also a questionable balance between in what you spend in time to reach your goals and what you get in return.

I guess my main motivation for getting into the production aspect of the industry is to become familiar with film/video equipment, the filmmaking process and post-production applications and the marketing process. I plan on going to back to school and majoring in media arts, but growing up poor, I never had access to computers, cameras or other types of equipment. I would use the opportunity to learn as much as I could about filmaking and marketing. And to meet cool, laid back, obviously very open-minded people. What type of positions are available for someone totally green? What type of pay should I expect. Is there a bus system? I have a lot of questions and I'd appreciate anyone willing to take the time to answer them. Thanks in advance. Toby

Why are you focusing on adult? With your interests, it seems like the mainstream TV/cable/movie industries would work just as well.
As someone who used to work in over-the-air broadcasting, I was always frustrated at the fact that it took so many people to get anything done.And it is so damn competitive. So much so that I left. Doesn't seem like it takes that many people to do a project from start to finish in porn so that certainly is a plus for "dangerboy" to consider. In fact I have often thought of what it would have been like to do the Chatsworth switch...

Heres my 2 cents, if you are a porn lover and then want to get into the production side of it, you will never watch a movie the same ever again! (just an opinion) but most people that have worked for me or just wanted to help out for the day has told me this on numerous ocassions. But as mentioned above, it is a skilled job if you want quality product just like in any other biz, I would think the most requested or room for growth is in the graphic art dept., editing, or internet tech aspect! along with shooting etc. post production is vital to us as producers in this biz for quality and brand recognition. You just need someone to give you the break to prove your talents and once you committ we take that very seriously and a man is only good as his word!
