Mostly, its surprisingly boring. There's a lot of waiting and waiting and more waiting. Especially on the big budget features. Not to mention long hours. Its usually an eight hour day for me minimum, once or twice its run into the twelve hour mark; the crew and talent are usually there for about two to four hours longer than the press has been, so that gives you an idea.

Its kind of surreal. At least its always been for me. I was never a huge porn fan, or viewer before I started freelancing with DVD Empire. I mean, I saw a couple of films here and there, and the internet stuff, but I was never into it. So there you are constantly surrounded by beautiful women perfectly willing to screw in front of you, and about twenty other guys.

And at times its not that sexy; more just kind of funny and silly. If you've ever watched porn at a bachelor party or in college you might get a feeling for what I'm getting at. I try to write in some of that humor, but a lot of the inside stuff I leave out because it is so inside and also it doesn't translate that well to the written word.

Mostly its pretty relaxed though. The people are cool. The crew doesn't mind you around, neither does the talent for the most part. The girls are easy to talk to. (I think I've only been blown off twice in six or seven months.) And every one is very professional. Nowhere near Boogie Nights expectations, sorry to say, if that's your image of the porn business.

Ultimately the experience could be either the time of a porn fan's life, or a giant disappoint. It depends really on the person and their fantasies, I guess. To Me its more business than anything, and an opportunity to hang out with a lot of people I've come to regard as friends.

To begin, the new guys shoot sex a lot better than most of the "old pros". I suspect the reason for this is that they don't care about any of the "rules", which should be porn's ultimate goal in the first place. Try to remember that most of the earlier pornographers never liked shooting porn to begin with. Most got into it for the money, and they had very little experience handling the performers, who also didn't know a whole lot about what they were trying to do.

Even today, I still get asked by some of the "try harders" or "wannabees" , as to how "many positions" do I want to shoot. I tell them I don't shoot positions, I shoot sex. I tell them to to not fuck for me, or their partner, but for themselves; but they usually end up going through the motions the way they tend to do for a lot of directors still doing porn and not liking it. They shoot porn for distributors who also don't like porn, so since it's never seen by anyone that cares, it ends up getting shoveled around in catalogues for a while.

The better sex scenes are those that are shot without a heavy schedule and not rushed, with just the director who's doing his own shooting and maybe one other guy to help with the stills and the lighting.

It's the reason that most features have pretty predictable sex scenes. They have the most people hanging around,with the most visitors, reviewers, clients, etc.

My net sets tend to be something akin to organized chaos depending on who's directing.

First things first, you have to organize the set. Where? Who? and What? I make sure the girls know precisely what they're going to do, what they're comfortable doing, and what they're comfortable with. The whores will do practically anything if they feel absolutely comfortable with you. They want to go off the edge and go nuts as long as they feel it's a challenge (again depending on the demeanor of the director).

Spontaneity is key to situations where you want a girl to snort cum snooters off a table or blowdry their face with jizz soaking on it. They want to suck off the guy passed out on the couch or stuff two gallons of lube in their cooze and let it leak out like an endless faucet.

One of the things I've noticed is that each girl is willing to try new things based on their limitations. For example, I've been involved in numerous 'golden shower' shoots on top of the scene already shot. Now I've never pissed on a girl. I've tried it once but couldn't muster the jets. Not exactly my cup of tea. But it's really quite funny when they realize how degrading it is especially when it enters the mouth and they gulp it down with a sour look on their faces. Funny thing is, some of the whores like it so much they'd later follow me to the bathroom in the hopes they get another outstanding liquid beverage. Again, the look of horror when they're denied the opportunity is priceless.

You have enough whores hanging around you and they're bound to do literally anything. But on a pornset, after they've done the shoots, you get the final pics, have them sign model releases (which can also be done before the scene but I prefer it afterwards) and you also get them in a video disclaimer stating their age, date of birth, stage name, real name, et al. Then they're paid. Some companies are on payroll, some just don't like to pay until later. Afterwards, we'll go out and get some booze (assuming their 21 and over).

If any of you want to check out a Net shoot and live in L.A., let me know. I'd be more than willing to let people check out certain shoots as long as you keep quiet and act like a fly on the wall. Hell, I'll even throw in a BJ scene for you as long as you sign the proper paperwork.

Shooting for the net and shooting for video are two different monsters.
