Gabriel Nine, thank you for your excellent review of Gregory Dark's The Psycho Sexuals. I was disappointed, although not that surprised, to hear that it isn't what it has been cracked up to be. I had been thinking about getting it, in my almost desperate search for something, anything, different.

So, what's all the hype about Gregory Dark? It sounds like a typical fuck flick to me, and I trust Gabriel's judgement, but are there other works of his that are perhaps worth a look? Or does the porn industry suffer from such a dearth of creativity that anyone who does things even slightly differently can be thought of as great?

Greg Dark is one of the most famous adult directors of all time. His most well known work is the infamous New Wave Hookers, and he's known for his predilection for the strange and politically incorrect (witness 'Let Me Tell Ya Bout Black Chicks' and 'Black Throat' in addition to DMJ's 3-5 and the first four New Wave Hookers movies).

He's also a pretty talented music video director, having filmed videos for Mandy Moore and Britney Spears.

Greg Dark also directs a lot of mainstream stuff under the name "Gregory Hippolyte", or some variation of that name.

I liked Psycho Sexuals, a lot. It's not his all time best film, although the Ruby/Chloe/Missy scene ranks, to be certain. The sequel is awful, however.

Gregory Dark is the bomb!

In the 80's the Dark Brothers were the best. New Wave Hookers, Between the Cheeks and Devil in Miss Jones III & IV all rocked. These films all had a lot of style and creativity plus the sex was nasty and hot!

His work in the 90's didn't have as much impact, but I think Shocking Truth 1 and (especially) 2 are awesome.

Hey, thanks for the kind words. Ironically, while I really like writing and reading reviews, I do tend to prefer to judge for myself. Taking other people's word for it can be a bad idea - my shelves are stacked with the hard lesson of many "recommended" but barely played CD's!

While I can't comment any more broadly on Gregory Dark's output (I only saw the goofily humorous White Bun Busters many "moons" ago, pun intended), I approached this movie from a similar perspective to you, looking for something a little different and mindful of Dark's undeniable reputation, and found that while the presentation of the movie is good, sexually it's mainly the same-old, same-old. That's just my view, and while I tend to enjoy some quite rough stuff, the Missy/Ruby/Chloe scene is too full of the OTT screaming that I really can't stand. The other point is that I just did not find many of the women attractive, period. No names, etc, but Sid Deuce knows who I mean.

You may well enjoy it, I don't know. It's available from Laser's Edge for a mere $7.95, free shipping too, I think, in the USA, so it's maybe worth a peep. All the other NuTech releases of Dark's movies are there for that price too, incidentally.

You'll have to rely on the other more expert Dark fans here for more!

On the more general point, I think it's true about the lack of creativity. I am sure people will be able to quote a good handful of directors who put a little bit more into their movies (I think Andrew Blake is worthy of lots of credit for his style, for one) but they are swamped by a sea of handycam merchants - some of whom make great porn, most of whom feed Leisure Time compilations - so I feel that there is a slight tendency in some critical quarters to over rate anyone who has a modicum of imagination in their productions.

Saki--

ARE YOU F_ING SERIOUS!!???!!

Greg Dark directed Britney Spears videos? How could this not have come out in the mainstream press? You would think someone would latch on to that, especially considering her whole "not a girl not yet a woman Hustler's barely legal I'm a virgin slut" sexual issue thing she's been dealing with over the course of the past year or two.

Amazing. What videos?

"From The Bottom Of My Broken Heart"
He was set to do others, but her company Jive Records dumped him when his porn past came to light. Having seen her concert on HBO, they should have hired him as a consultant...that concert was about as close to pornography as they could get away with.

And it was covered in the mainstream press...newspaper articles, blurbs in Time and Esquire, internet, etc.

Thanks for the info guys. I won't give up hope then - maybe I need to lower my expectations somewhat. I think I was just expecting something radically different, but I'll
check out something else by him.

Exactly why your review was helpful to me. I also have a stack of 'highly recommended' titles, and I could tell by your well-written descriptions that that's not what I was looking for.

I am not the biggest fan of artsy-fartsy type porn films, but there's something about GREGORY DARK that I really love.

The sex may come second in some, but when I watch a Dark film, I actually watch it. It's entertaining to watch a Greg Dark film.

I am eagerly awaiting his work with VCA to be released by them on DVD.
