If most pornography is consumed online, will you download your favorite features such as Pirates, Operation Desert Stormy, The Fashionistas, etc...? What does this mean for larger companies who cater to couples looking for more narrative build up and titillation? Or the kinky fans who like to see BDSM, but can only watch in their favorite feature? SInce BDSM is online without narratives (primarily) does this mean these fans will go to the already established Internet companies? How about packaging? The sale of DVDs is even higher than 2 or 3 years before, but the prices went down much more, so the profit is lower. Especially in US porn, too many companys have a high price when the DVD is released, but they reduce it to 50% or even 75%, after just 2 or 3 months. So many customers just wait or only rent. Only WICKED has a better strategy, at least in Europe, they dont reduce their old DVDs exorbitantly ( around 10% ). And they have a large backcatalogue, Ive ordered quite a lot of older titles, and there never was a problem. Some companys cant even deliver titles ( or want ? ) half a year old. Download is more a problem regarding cheap porn sampler and boxoffice hits. The normal back programm, and especially classics, like "Jaws", "Star Wars", "E.T." are always going strong. Almost all of the customers have this movies, but they rent them because of the bonus material on DVD. The Porn flood of the last years, with many, many extremely bad porn "movies", is mostly responsible for the so-called "crisis". But its only a crisis, if you look at the low profits, not at the number of porn movies rented or bought. [Link] |

Walgreens are apparently going to start rolling out DVD burning booths in their stores, so this is a big step in that direction. It's a boon for retailers because there is no physical stock that has to be stored, moved, inventoried, sold at a discount to make room for new releases. It will also pose an interesting challenge for shoplifters. However, the issue then becomes one of 'Why go to the store when we can just download and burn it at home?'. So I believe store chains could end up shooting themselves in the foot somewhat on this one. As soon as download-to-burn really takes off and one of the big consumer electronics companies rolls out a ubiquitous disc burner that can also print artwork on the disc face at a reasonable price, then finished copy DVDs (or HD-DVDs, or Blu-Ray, or whatever) will become defunct. Media companies (be they porn, mainstream, record companies, video game designers or whatever) would do well to start reevaluating their business models with an eye on non-digital hard goods, i.e. ancillary merchandising...you can't get an action figure off of bit torrent, nor can you download a dildo from rapidshare. This will all be moot if the industries involved can begin to successfully crack down on piracy, but as yet, very little has happened on this front. In the future yet to come, I envisage a world wherein there are very few middlemen between the artist and their audience, and thus a bigger piece of the financial pie for the artist, or perhaps a lower cost for the consumer (look at Radiohead's new album, for example). The real winners will be the companies that media storage products (the discs, the disc burners, printers, pre-cut blank DVD sleeves, cases etc.). Media will still be ultimately tangible at the discretion of the end user, but it will very likely not be sold as such. [Link] |

They have stopped making VHS tapes and very soon they will not be making any VHS players. Probably within 10 years they will stop making DVDs and DVD players and that technology will be replaced with some form of "better, faster, cheaper." A likely candidate would be some form of chip memory, like the current PC memory sticks and of course cable/wi-fi downloads. The HD flat panel displays (all sizes, from hand-held to wall mounted) would have a small port that would accept and read the memory stick. Then, of course, in time, that technology will be replaced. Whether or not 'features' are produced will depend on the same factors as today. Can a profit be made. There might even be a point when live actors are no longer required. Whoa! [Link] |
