Why can't they design a case that is the same size of the dvd disk? Make the inserts smaller and the case with a small lip ... This well bring down the storeage space and will solve the problem of having are dvd's coming loose and scrathing when in shippment. me [Link]

Making the packaging smaller will just make DVD's easier to steal. It also makes them harder to display. Unlike with CD's, the cover of DVD's (especially adult ones) are incredibly important to the sale or rental of those discs. That's why the adult VHS boxes are so much bigger than VHS boxes of mainstream titles. [Link]

A different box size greatly reduces the risk that Little French Maid gets shelved in the mainstream section where kids are allowed, instead of “behind the curtain” in the adult section. Isn’t VHS packaging in Europe in the smaller boxes? Jewel cases are much superior to keep-cases in protecting the disc (since the disk doesn’t come loose and rattle around inside) but I agree it would be too small. [Link]

SueR Member Under a hill of books 262 Posts 12/02	Posted - Sep 7 2003 : 10:32PM I understand that some retailers may not, on its surface, like the idea of changing case sizes...BUT...what about the benefits of matching the industry size standards of DVD's and CD's? Huh? Eh? Yes! There are DEFINITE benefits to that. The shelving for 2 massive and sister industries become one! Plus, with the mainstream side, there are less new individual titles. There are easily hundreds of copies of the top title of the week on display in every major video store. What a smaller cover of The Two Towers loses in individual impact, it does not lose in the collective impact of 100 copies looking out at you. Additionally the ones for sale instead of rent are all lined up spine-out anyway with special displays and posters to bring attention. The older, catalog titles are a different matter. Most porn shops I go in, they don't even separate out old and new. Or when they do, often the new are so embarrassingly old it's...embarrassing. The major difference, admittedly, is that catalog music titles have reputation, while porn titles depend much more on the cover for the sell. Sales based on brand/reputation/familiarity with content are not as strong in porn as in music. People buy the Eagles Greatest Hits 2 because of the content they're already familiar with, not because of the cool picture of an LP on the cover. My thought is...some predicted people wouldn't buy dvd's because of the smaller box. Let's go all the way. [Link]

They're the same height and width of a standard keepcase, but about half as thick. They're mostly used for TV sets at the moment. If you want to see what they look like, the five new "Twilight Zone" boxed sets come with nine of these packed into a small box. [Link]

Online stores make up a small percentage of DVD's sold, which would make it even less cost effective. [Link]
