I guess it would be from the mid 70's to the early 80's. This was a period when porn was shot on film and you watched it an actual movie theatre. The films were all plot driven and the sex scenes were shorter than what you see now, but it many ways a lot hotter, especially if Vanessa del Rio or Samantha Fox were in them.

The release of DEEP THROAT in 1972 marks the begin. Its the first porn feature film shown in regular cinemas. Before that porn was usually shown on 8mm loops in seedy backyard rooms.

The end of the golden age was when homevideo took over.
In 1978 every third sold/rented videotape was a copy of DEEP THROAT.

I recommend to rent it for porn historical purposes not for arousal.

Another classic you should watch is the original DEVIL IN MISS JONES. It comes as a bonusdisc with the Vivid-remake.

Amen to Samantha Fox. Aside from being gorgeous, she affected a different look for almost every film, poured her intelligence into crafting roles from innocent coquette to bitchy ballbuster and was an extremely energetic performer.

1972 to 1984 is the most accepted range that I have seen.
I have a list of films released during that period over in the feaure side that are available on DVD. They aren't all true classics though as this list just encompasses the time period. Blake_Fan put up this listing of films from that period along with their classic rating, which you also might find to be of help.

How Cool!

As something of a golden age historian myself, I'd be fascinated to learn about the behind-the-scenes personalities of anyone you'd care to discuss.

For the record, these ladies would be particularly interesting to me:

Kristara Barrington
Samantha Fox
Colleen Brennan
Tara Aire
Robin Cannes
Laurie Smith
Susan McBain
Cindy West
Nicole West
Crystal Dawn
Gabriella
Debbie Northrup
Kandi Barbour
Nanci Suiter
Holly McCall
Misty Regan
Laura Lazare
Erica Boyer
Veronica Hart
Tiffany Clark
Rachel Ashley
Jacqueline Lorians
Loni Sanders
Gayle Sterling
Lesllie Bovee
Helga Sven
Cher Delight
Rhonda Jo Petty
Anna Ventura
Chelsea Blake
Cindy Carver
Lili Marlene
Bree Anthony (aka Sue Richards)
Denise and Diane Sloan
Heather Wayne
Honey Wilder
Hyapatia Lee
Melanie Scott

Basically, who was hot in person, who was shy, who looked good off-screen, etc. Feel free to ramble. No detail is too small!

List is too long for people who only want to get an overview.

Let's break it down to an "essential five of the golden age".

Deep Throat (Arrow, VCA)
The Devil in Miss Jones (VCX, Vivid)
Barbara Broadcast (VCA)
Behind the Green Door (Mitchell Bros)
Debbie Does Dallas (Arrow, NuTech, VCX)

Flash, do you agree with the selection?

The golden age of porn (IMHO) was the years 1981-1983 inclusive, when one "particular" cable channel would magically switch programming at about 10:00 p.m., and I was left to navigate through those twisting images, catching an occasional boob or ass. Best part was, the sound never changed in those early days. Sam Fox was still hot whether her body was scrambled like a Jim Rose act or not. So was Heather Lere, Barbara Dare, Taija Rae, Keisha, and the rest.

I've since come to appreciate other, earlier years, but those were "golden" to me :-) There's a reson my clothes get washed in Ivory Snow.

Usually it does, Gabriel. Over here in Europe in the 70ies in the UK porn was banned and on the continent production was scattered, all though there are some very good movies from that period (like the Josephine Mutzenbacher's) a lot of it is lost forever.

You're a man after my own heart. I remember those 'almost free' good ole days. We had something called SuperTv and it came on at about 8:00 PM. This was all before this same channel became an independent channel and is now part of the WB network family. But scrambled SuperTv was good while it lasted.

Flash logically added "Taboo", let me add a personal favorite that would make the Top 5 : Robert McCallum's "3 A.M". The Nutech dvd is heavily recommended.

Hi, She wasn't very famous, but one of my fave girls from that era was Nicole Noir, AKA Nicole Black. She was a supporting actress in most of her flicks, but had a starring role in the movie, "Moments of Love". The 1st porn movie I ever saw (in a porno theatre BTW) was "Naughty Network". Nicole played a nurse, and the guy playing the patient first stuck a thermomoter, then a coke bottle, then his dick in her ass. On later copies they edited out the Coke bottle part of the scene. Sorry for rambling, but was curious if anyone else was a fan of Nicole.
Some of my other personal faves from that period were Annette Haven, Amber Hunt, Jacqueline Loriens, Loni Sanders, Veronica Hart, Laurie Smith, and Nancy Suiter!

This is Peter's list, widely quoted...

"Well fear no more, here for your browsing pleasure is a list of many of the best porno movies ever made. Many of them are from the so-called Golden Age which is generally considered to have been from about 1977 to 1982."

I would agree with the last post. We are in the golden age of porn now. Sure some of the older stuff is good and very passionate but right now in porn we have hotter girls, better quality, and more nasty sex. You only have to mention someone like Belladonna to confirm all of that.

Isn't the defining point of the term "golden age" that it describes a time long gone?

1985-1991/2 is considered by many to be the "silver age" -- a breakthru time for stars -- Ginger Lynn, Traci, Christy Canyon -- girls who were hotter than most before them and would do things many wouldn't -- you just have to look at Ginger's work with the Dark Brothers to know she was a predecessor to all of today's three-input chicks...

I believe the introduction of Gonzo closed the silver age and brings us into the modern era.

In many ways I consider the 1985-1990 time frame a transition period. And as is the case with most transition periods, they tend to offer more to the scholar interested in the development of a cultural form, than to the connoiseur/fan interested in erm... jacking off. For me personally, the girls of the second part of the 80s were one of the few highlights in an otherwise dull period -- give or take a few well known exceptions (Dark, De Renzy, Seven, Durrell/Brown, Ricaud, ...).

More than these exceptions though, the period is perhaps best (well, not exactly best, if you know what I mean) remembered as the years in which the 'one day wonder' videos were standardized by directors such as Norm L. Pera, Bill Blackman and Ron Jeremy -- yeah, yeah, I know, they are all Ron Jeremy -- and companies such as Cinderella, Video Exclusives and Hollywood Video.

Well, I'd rather call it annus mirabilis.
Probably your personal favourite years. But that doesn't make it a golden age.

The term golden age in itself reeks of personal taste.

No. Its a term applied to a time when a country or an art or anything else was in full bloom.

Of course nothing a man says or does is free of its personal taste but at least we can try to make objective assessment.

I prefer feature porn from the nineties. But I would never call the nineties the golden age of porn because that's simply not true.

Define 'in full bloom' in the context of 'porn'.

I'd say the 70s and early 80s were the golden age of creativity and artistry, the real attempts at making films in the adult industry.

The late 80s through the mid 90s was the golden age of the Vivid girl; the barbies with bolt-ons and the age of the true superstars.

The millenium and beyond has been the golden age of gonzo, the closest the industry has come to displaying true hot sex. Its still a work in progress, obviously.

The only golden era film I've seen is 'Insatiable', but I loved it. Marilyn Chambers looked so hot in that limo. Porn had class back in those days.

I think that this is a very good point, and I'll advance my criteria.

For me, the golden age was from 1971 to 1978, based on the following considerations.

1. Porn was exhibited in public, usually in theaters but sometimes in bars. Viewing porn was both a collective and an individual experience. In some venues, particularly in NYC and San Francisco, porn films alternated with live shows. It was not unusual in those cities to see a girl both on film and live for the price of one admission. At some porn houses, there would be special nights when swingers would congregate to watch porn and have sex.

2. Porn was advertised in mainstream media and in a forthright fashion. This was particularly true when conventional movie theaters were in the process of converting to porn houses. Some conventional theaters occasionally would show a porn film, indicative of how significant titles, such as "The Devil in Miss Jones", had broad cultural appeal.

3. There was virtually no content restriction, and, in some cities, mainstream media published advertising for content that is now considered outre.

4. Pornstars made personal appearances in venues in which they had sexual contact of various sorts with fans, such as at Show World or the Melody Burlesque in New York City or the O'Farrell in San Francisco.

5. Widespread distribution and viewing of porn was new in our culture.

Agreed - surely this is a subjective thing.

I have recently seen a couple of films from the periods mentioned earlier in this thread and indeed still have one or two videos from the late 70's-early 80's period and Folks , seriously they are crap beyond belief by compariosn to some of the fine stuff out there now from the likes of :

RLD, 3rd Degree, Sineplex, Evil Empire and others.

Again ahem to what Nietzche says - now is the golden era.

Take of your nostalgia spectacles and judge rationaly.

Well that's my opinion anyhoo , but as I said at the outset - it's a personal call

Hi.

When the term Golden Age of Porn is used in conversation it's generally understood to refer to the era starting with Deep Throat and ending approximately at the Dark Bros. and at the beginning of shot-on-video porns.
Whether that was the 'best' era is a matter of opinion, but if you're at your office's Christmas party or your high school reunion and you use the phrase Golden Age of Porn to classify current gonzo flicks from Evil Angel and Platinum X, people will definately be confused.
Maybe the modern era could be called the 'Rennaissance of Porn' or the 'Porn Revival'?

For my personal taste, my golden age was from the early 90's to about 2004, and decreasing as it went on. I'm a fan of plot set-ups and glamorous looks so despite the timid action of Vivid and Wicked, that's the kind of look I like.

Ashlyn Gere and Jeanna Fine are the two actresses that come to mind when I think of who performed best during the era I like to watch. My two personal favorites performed later on, from the late 90's to the early 2000's, but as the years have gone on, the good work I like has been deluged by extreme glamour-less stuff and the glamour...full stuff has become really boring looking.
