Mostly for who's in it. My favorites include Christi Lake, Alexandra Silk, Felecia, Nikki Dial, Hypatia Lee, Racquel Darrian, Christy Canyon, Ashlyn Gere and Seka. A lot of their titles are just gone. Poof. Non-existent. I also enjoy the Sodomania series and William H. films, and there's films in those catalogs that are also MIA. I have been able to hunt down Ben Dover's titles but only because his films are still in print overseas. Man those dollar-pound exchange rates are a bitch!
Almost all Ben Dover titles are still in print over here. We have a bunch of his older ones for about $15 if you're still missing some for your collection. Jacco

I guess things are going not so well at Anabolic. Years ago they seemed to keep titles available for many years. Last year I tried to get a new copy of Gangbang Girl 37 for the scene with Chanel Chavez. I didn't order it right away (it was released in early 2008) and when I tried to order it last year it was already out of print. For a while I thought it might be re-released in blu-ray, but seeing as she and Maya Hills (in the other scene) are now long gone it's highly doubtful. I'm not into downloading porn because I've had issues with hard drives. There are other DVDs I have had trouble purchasing so it does seem like some porn titles make it out for one production run and that's it.

I'm not the most tech-savvy guy around but, to help preserve these films ( and not worry about the lack of storage space/overhead), might it be a good idea to digitise them and make them available as (paid-for) hi-def downloads that can be encoded so they can be burned to disc once only? The distributors could have a searchable database for fave porn stars or subject matter,similar to what alot of online sites do but for their own catalogue. This way films should be available for a much longer period of time after they sell-through for those who still want them and without taking up too much physical space in a shop/warehouse. Surely some companies must do this already?
um hasn't Wikipedia already proven that Wikis can be valuable? we're not talking 100 guys versus 1000 guys, we're talking 100 editors' expertise vs 1 million editors' expertise. Yes, there's a difference between Wikipedia and Encyclopedia Brittanica, but Wikipedia still has value. The pages you linked to weren't true wikis, btw. They look like fake spam sites. Boobpedia is a niche porn wiki that I've used for years. I don't know if it's a legit wiki, but it seems so.
Does anybody remember Patrick Riley's X-Rated Videotape Star Index Volumes I-III? Before IAFD that and maybe RAME newsgroup were the only options you really had to lookup titles for you favorite stars. http://www.amazon.com/Patrick-Riley/e/B001K8HBR6/ref=ntt_athr_dp_pel_1 The risk with IAFD is that they will become more like IMDB which used to be totally free and open but then started restricting access to some info. If that ever happened with IAFD then you'd start to see more open replacements like a Wikipedia site. Only problem is Wikipedia is having funding problems I think. Somebody wondered if there would be a market for 80s porn? I think there will always be a market for old content primarily from the guys who grew up watching that stuff and get nostalgic about it. But as they get older and die off the market for that will shrink. For example, how many guys are looking for old 8mm loops or worse porn from the 50's and 60's? The classics from 70s are still in demand because of the large baby boomer population and because the 70s had higher production values drawing some newer fans. The 80s and 90s led to huge flood of movies especially cheap amateur stuff which will probably be lost forever just because of the sheer volume of movies produced. But usually the content worth collecting is held onto by die hard fans. So lot of content considered junk of crap now may turn out to be gold 20-30 yrs from now just because its different. For example, the 70s porn has a unique look and the people looked a lot different (e.g. lot of female pubic hair, garters heels and scarves look). Same goes for 80s and 90s porn with the big 80s hair and heavy makeup look. Also movies for particular stars will be valuable. A lot of younger newer fans might want to check out older stars like Vanessa Del Rio, Seka, Ashlyn Gere, and so just to see why were they so popular. Something else to think about is using digital storage to preserve movies. Right now Google is trying to digitize tons of books which are no longer available in print. The idea is to preserve those books which may be lost forever. Ted Turner did the same thing with old hollywood movies which are now shown on Turner Classics. So its not a stretch to think people will start doing the same with porn movies. This is sort of being done already using tube sites and file hosting sites where fans are posting clips from old movies and trading digital copies of old porn movies no longer in circulation. Of course some guys are trying to make money off this and not just doing it as fans.
I have every volume of the film indexes -- the first two volumes were by Robert Rimmer, and are the best. I have found them to be invaluable, both as factual resources and as jumping off points for debate. :)
^ Yeah I remember Robert Rimmer's X-Rated Videotape Guide. His book was kinda sloppy. He wrote a book that was turned into a movie also. I think Don Johnson from Miami Vice TV show was in it? Patrick Riley's book was like a printed version of IAFD. The IAFD guys probably used that to create their initial database.

I wish I could find these, maybe I should just bite the bullet and order them online? One guide I found much stronger than I thought it might be was The Woman's Guide to Erotic Videos: 300 Sexy Videos for Every Woman - and Her Lover by Angela Cohen and Sarah Gardner Fox. Even though it was written in 1997 it mostly focuses on classic 70s and 80s features.
^ Order them online -- Amazon Used. The initial two volumes are a little pricey but nothing ridiculous and worth every penny (or cent). Later volumes (lamer ones) are as cheap as $3. Be warned: pervs tear out the awesome photo section in the centre of the book. I couldn't be bothered to return mine, as it was like Vol. 5 or something, but still. It's also fun having them used because, at least in mine, there are highlighted titles, and check marks -- what literary folks call "marginalia" (yes, it sounds sexual, I know...). No words, just little gestures that hint at a story. I love it. :) Oh and I will certainly check out the book you mentioned -- sounds awesome.How do you mean sloppy? Like, facts were incorrect? I agree. I just put it down to there being no internet. But one photo in either Vol I or II, is George Payne and it's credited as Jamie Gillis. That irks me to no end every single time I see it. As for Patrick Riley, his attitude toward adult film in the later volumes is practically polar opposite to Rimmer, who preferred "real films" (which is why they teamed up according to their intro), and to me is often gut-churning in its intentional crudity and lack of respect/optimism.
^ Yeah Rimmer's book had a lot of typos and errors. If you search the old RAME archives you'll see postings from people complaining about the mistakes. But at the time beggers couldn't be choosy if you know what I mean. I can't remember but I think Rimmer reviewed the movies? Riley's book was just an index or reference book a printed version of IAFD. It was great if you just wanted to find the titles that your favorite stars appeared in. The problem was that it was too cumbersome to keep purchasing updated volumes. I think I only purchased the first two volumes and then stopped. Eventually IAFD came online and obsoleted those Riley books. Another good source was the annual directory or guide printed by Adam Film World. They published a monthly issue reviewing the latest movies with pictorial spreads from the movie. At the end of the year they would print a big guide or directory that summarized all their movie reviews and ratings. I don't know if they are still around? I stopped subscribing to them a long time ago. You can still find their backissues being sold online.
^ Rimmer reviewed the movies, then Riley came on board and they co-reviewed, and then it was just Riley and the books became sort of listings with the occasional snarky review.

Exactly like comics....and music and mainstream movies. People say how today's stuff is so bad and claim the old stuff was better but they tend to only remember the good old stuff and somehow totally forget about all the bad stuff done back then. With so much of that stuff it's about the memories of good times they were having back then moreso than the actual material.

But what is your definition of "old stuff?" Are those out-of-print Anabolic Video productions old? They were 10 to 15 years ago But those titles were the birth of gonzo. So many stars in their earliest years in the business. If that is "very bad" then what is good?

There's a lot of good stuff that isn't available. For some reason, "Real TIckeTS" 1 and 2 from VCA in '93 and '95 are not available in any format. Those two were part of the beginning of the natural tits genre which was a reaction to the big wave of fake tits. Both films were loaded with big stars of the day.
It's a shame it is so difficult to track down certain titles, and even in these internet-enabled days it seems people still have trouble. However, I imagine that makes tracking down that elusive title all the sweeter...!? As noted above, it must surely come down largely to economics. So much supply (ie, hitherto, so much porn shot each year), and the money to be made from these older/sold out titles musn't stack up against the remaining demand. (Rights etc may be a problem in some cases, but if profits were to be made you'd expect there to be some compromise agreed). Just be thankful you don't live in the UK - whilst the net can be helpful to those who wish to use that route, getting access to even the latest (DVD) releases is difficult here due to regressive legal rules and restrictions on porn. ukmg
