I have a Toshiba SD-2109 and want to be able to play region 2 (JAV) materials. I have no idea how this is done. I assume it's illegal. Interestingly, the British version of my exact model is region free.

The only thing I found doing a search suggests that the player requires a different chip, which means it's probably cheaper to get a new player.

Not always true. In alot of areas there will be small shops (pawn shops, privatly owned video game stores, etc) where the owner will know how to mod your ps2 or dvd player. In my area this one shop charges $35 to mod a dvd player, and $80 to mod your ps2.

Modding your dvd player isnt really illegel, but it would void any warrenty you might have.

Be aware that, even if you succeed with the region hack, it is likely that the discs that you want to watch are in PAL. You don't have a location listed, so I'm assuming that you are in the US. If that's correct, you will need a TV that is capable of displaying a PAL signal.

Wait. I thought PAL was a video cassette encoding format. I didn't know it was a television format

PS I am in the US

If you are importing JAV DVD's from Japan to the US you should be ok with the system. Japan uses NTSC also.

The confusion is because Japan and Europe share the same Region Code 2 but run on different systems PAL for Europe, NTSC for Japan.

Not all JAV studios use Region Codes. Waap does but SOD doesn't.

Well, it was my intention to buy some WAAP and Moody'z dvd's. Do you have any idea why some companies would be Region 2 and others Region 1?

I'm not privy to any particular company's reasoning, but I suppose it just depends on the market(s) they want to sell to. If their intention is to sell into the local market they may decide why bother with multi-regional encoding.

Japanese DVD's will either be Region 2 or Region 0 i.e. Playable worldwide.
Region 1 is for films released in North America only.

Like Hardware stated companies like Waap, Moodyz etc may be targeting their local markets only. Region codes were introduced by the big film companies to control access to DVD's worldwide. If you were a porn distributor you would want the opposite i.e an unrestricted customer base for your product.

There are also some software utilities that allow people to view discs from different regions. This page has some of them:

With regard to Japanese discs, indeed, some of them are region 2, but quite a few are playable in all regions. I wish all the JAV companies would go to all regions.
