Sometimes when FF crashes or something, it creates or renames new bookmark file, called bookmarks-1.html.
But always there is then 2 bookmark files, and bigger must be "new" one.

And sometimes when FF crashes it Creates new profile, and old one is maybe still there with bookmarks.
it's also possible that bookmarks are just gone.

edit: Also there is bookmarks.bak file, if filesize is bigger than bookmarks.html file, then your bookmarks are there.
But i'am sure it's overwritten by now, because Firefox saves that always when you close Firefox.

But firefox has few times created bookmarks-1 file,
like last week, i have not looked what's inside, but filesize is 20kb smaller than this current one, so maybe i just delete that.

ps: I have used FF almost 2 years.
