Porn is fiction, of course, and every porn movie scene tells us a story about the characters portrayed by the porn actresses and actors in that scene – not a story about the persons who they are in real life. But in my view, there are two levels of acting going on in porn. There is the superficial, obvious level: a porn actress plays the role of, for example, a high school student, a babysitter, a cleaning lady, a neighbor, a bored and horny housewife, a girlfriend who wants to cheat on her boyfriend, a nurse, a cop, etc, etc. But there is also another, deeper, more subtle level: the character or, more accurate, persona that a certain porn actress has created for herself (more or less consciously) and which she keeps with her from scene to scene, from production to production, and which we as audience/consumers associate with the actress so much and for such a long time that we eventually believe that the porn actress and her persona are the same person. I’m talking about personas such as the happy-go-lucky girl, the depraved and nasty girl, the innocent and naïve girl, the cool and party-loving girl, the crazy MILF, etc. Often, the personas connect with ethnic stereotypes: the hot-blooded and insatiable Latina, the rich and spoiled white girl, the exploited Asian immigrant, the desperately poor Eastern European girl who does it all, the sexually liberal Swedish girl with a confident smile on her face, the sin-obsessed Catholic girl from Italy, the perfumed and elegant French woman, etc. I think this level of acting is pretty interesting, and I also think that porn actresses don’t get enough credit for their actual acting.
What I would like to talk about specifically here today is the persona I call ”the perfect whore”. A porn actress with this persona doesn’t actually need to play the role of a prostitute in a porn scene – she doesn’t have to play any role at all, there doesn’t need to be a script at all – but, as she keeps this persona throughout her carreer as a porn actress, we as audience/consumers FEEL that she is the perfect whore.
The perfect whore does not smile a lot (but she smiles politely once in a while, to keep the costumer happy), she is cool and emotionally detached but never gives the impression of being bored or in pain. She does not talk much during sex, but she knows how to moan discretely and believably. She is sexy and she knows it but is not crazy for sex like some hormone-intoxicated teenager. She takes care of her body and does not have a tattoo (or she has a very small one) because she doesn’t want to look cheap. She sucks cock beautifully and fucks energetically, because it is her profession and she is keen to do it well, but she doesn’t pretend to reach orgasms, because she is not some girlfriend who is anxious to please (and she knows that the man who she’s in bed with isn’t looking for a girlfriend in her).
