Over the years, certain chicks and their omnipresence and popularity have built watersheds on the porn arc. So much so, that you need only say or see their names to pinpoint the time that they inarguably ruled. Then they go away, and the next one rises. Examples: The Jenna Jameson Era The Kobe Tai Era The Sasha Grey Era The Tera Patrick Era The Gianna Michaels Era The Katsuni Era Who's era is this? Today? November 2015? Is it Riley Reid? Dillion Harper? Can it be one of the Euro superstars like Anjelica or Doris Ivy? Mia Khalifa?
I might dispute some of your choices for who was dominant in their respective eras, but I agree with the general premise that there is usually one or two performers who can be regarded as being at the top of the heap. Usually. I think we're actually in a rare moment right now where there is no top dog in the industry. The fact that you even have to ask the question is indicative of that. Since Asa Akira moved on to Wicked, no clear commanding presence has emerged. Lots of Princesses, but no Queen. Maybe one of them will do something extraordinary that puts them ahead of the pack. We'll see.
I wasn't creating a definitive list, just tossing out quick examples. And of course, it's mostly subjective, but I don't see, as someone above mentioned, a "QUEEN" at the moment. No starlet whose new work we all anticipate strongly and clamor to consume. Certainly has something to do with the ease and speed with which the studios are able to dump high quality content into the marketplace. It dilutes the field, fuzzes the faces, and makes it very difficult for someone exceptional to rise to the top. Quantity, quantity. Years ago, for example, when Asia Carrera would announce a new movie, we'd wait for four months, then pounce when it released. Jesse Jane! New scene? Hooray! Now, the flavor-of-the-day tweets that she shot a 20-man gangbang on Tuesday, we watch it Wednesday, immediately forget it, move on to the next one. Maybe Alexis Texas is our girl of the moment. Or Carter Cruise. Alina Li had potential before it went sideways for her. Stoya? Vanished. Asa Akira? I guess...
There was a Ginger Lynn era in the 80's. There was a Jenna Jameson era in the 90's. That's really about it. aclayfan is right -- the names you list were stars, but other than Jenna they were not big enough stars to define their own era. There are so many good performers and so many productions today that it is very difficult for one person to stand out above all others for a period of several years.
In lez there was the Felecia era, then the Girlfriends Films era, then more lez studios. Depending on location and preference for Euro porn, Viv Thomas could also be an era.
Agreed. 100% That dude knows pussy. I got turned on to Jo/Monica Sweet because of him. I'd throw myself on a grenade to save Viv Thomas. Definitely an era.

Haha that is actually a smart thread. Yeah, you will tell me there are hundreds similar but Not exactly the same. Actually this could have a general title like: "THE STOCK MARKET OF PORN" or maybe "PORN CHARTS" similar to music charts. Meaning the names of the starlets that actually play more during passing weeks or months. Has nothing to do with what we like or not. It has to do more about the publicity, the weight of their name at a certain period. For example IMHO, this certain period OCTOBER-NOVEMBER 2015 the name that has the most significant "special weight" is Megan Rain. Meanwhile... Explore Sexuality!
In your examples you're comparing Contract Girls to Gonzo girls. I the days of Asia or during the contract days of Jesse you had to wait for their new stuff because you were only able to get it from one place: the studio they were working for. So their appearances were a bit more special because they were exclusive. With Gonzo girls they tend to put out more stuff at a much faster rate because they're jumping all over the place from studio to studio. I one month they might appear in 5 releases. I think with this era of Gonzo girl it's just much harder to maintain being the "it" girl for a long period of time. Alexis Texas was the "it" starlet for awhile a few years ago. She had a good run of it. I think Jada Stevens and Riley Reid are still "it" girls to a certain extent. Neither aren't the hot new girl that everyone is watching their every move but they are performers that still get a lot of people excited and has a fanbase that follows them from project to project. Then you have to keep in mind everyone's definitions "THE STARLET OF THE MOMENT" will be different. Some will judge it on biggest fanbase, others on number of appearances, some will base it a raunch/hardcore factor, some will base it solely on who they happen to like at the moment. You could say Lisa Ann was that girl right up til she retired because she had a huge fanbase and could move product. You could say Riley Reid is that girl because she has the fanbase and pumped people up by finally doing anal. You could say Jada Stevens because she's got the following and mostly appears in "harder" scenes by higher end studios. You could say Carter Cruise because people are just waiting to see what she does next.
Lisa Ann now is perhaps/probably tje biggest porn superstar of all time. As for this point in time, the "Starlet" in my mind would have to be either... Ariana Marie or Karlee Grey or Abigail Mac. Popular opinion woild put Ariana or Abigail over Karlee probably. I am clearly biased ad Karlee I IS my current favorite. But I see Abigail or Ariana as the reigning princesses of porn..
Asa Akira was the last superstar. No one working today has reached that level of name recognition. The best test is to see if the average person recognizes their name. Most would know Jenna Jameson or Sasha Grey.

How soon we all forget. I would argue that we had the "Jenna Haze" era, for about 2-3 years, before she retired (and pretty much walked away from porn).
Yeah, but are you talking about mainstream recognition? That's a whole 'nother thing. There have been lots of girls who've been big in porn but the non-porn world have no idea who they are. Does the average person know who Riley Reid is? Yet she's big within the porn industry. On the opposite side...mainstream audiences have heard of Mary Carey yet she didn't make much of a splash in porn. Asa could've been the last "superstar" but it depends on the criteria.
Oh...I totally overlooked the obvious. Ryan Conner is the "it" porngirl of the moment. The fans are really into her and a bunch of studios are scooping her up. She has lots of heat at the moment.

I think there was definitely a period when Asa Akira and Alexis Texas were tops. With her return Alexis is tops right now, she obviously still has the power to sell which is rare in this period. But she can only be this dominate because no one else has been able to rise to the top in her absence. Remy Lacroix and Abella Danger are probably the best bet although Remy seems to have stepped back a lot just like Alexis.
