This is not about personal taste or specific sex niches.
I simply wonder who shall buy all the DVDs released every month? No matter if you're into romantic features, rough ass action, barely legal chicks or anything else.
Well, obviously there are way more people who buy it, than who will admit to buying, even anonymous on an Internet messageboard. I think Drew posted some statistics once about how many people read the forum and don't post, not to mention all the people who only read reviews or use the pricesearch.
in my humble opinion i believe that whether or not all the porn is selling or not it has reached a point where there is just too much of it. it would be nice for studios to spend more time on each release so that the title (whether its gonzo, feature, etc.) is of high quality. the high end companies (wicked, vivid, etc.) seem to understand this.
i guess some companies are more interested in spending the least amount of time on each production so that they can rake in the quick cash.
I can't that's why i try to have my wish list for rent if I really dig the girls or the title I go ahead and buy it. Is always smart to use the ADT review system.
I buy on average 10 to 20 porn DVD's a month so I'm doing my part in keeping this business alive. I wish I could buy more but that might be a little excessive.
Damn! And I thought I was bad. Well actually, when I combine the regular porn and Hentai together, I get in that range every now and again. Not quite every month though. Yet.
Its actually not as bad as you might think, EB. I'm financially secure, own my own home and have no major debts so I can afford to spend whatever it takes to enjoy the things I like most in life: sex, drugs and rock 'n roll!
That's what I meant to say. Although I don't agree that Wicked and Vivid always do their best. They have one fine produced feature a year, for example SPACE NUTS, but lots of their features would look much better given two more days of production time.
I remember Brandon Iron saying that BAKER'S DOZEN2 was the most expensive produced but also the one that sold best.
Why don't all producers slow down a little bit and give their fans one or two DVDs less a month but increase the quality?
Looks as if I'm in Asmodeus's league as I put up similar numbers. I only buy all-girl and solo stuff so I have slim pickings. I've also learned after buying one or two of a company's offerings what companies to avoid and have recently been renting as well to help weed out stuff I would rather not own.
I only buy blowjob/handjob/bukkake dvds now, so I am able to purchase all the new releases each month. I have stopped buying a few series that I didnt really enjoy, such as Gag Factor, and replaced with more foreign made series that I like much better.
I would agree with pwing, I wish the studios put more quality into their work.
Sweet. That's even more we have in common. Though I don't quite yet own my own home. Couple more years on the mortgage and I'm done. Not bad for a 25 year old! Though my conservative nature shows itself now. I need to back off on my porn intake and other things for a couple months or so. I just need to get me another Jackson Custom Shop 7 string! That's more necessary then porn. For right now.
You are correct about that. My point, however, was only to say that they do attempt to make sure that everything that they release is of at least a decent quality. Nobody's perfect.
Joey's latest thread brings this old question back to my mind.
Why does every studio release so many DVDs each month? I wished they released only half as much and double the effort they put in each of their releases.
Sorry, I don't follow where randomness comes into it. Let's start by assuming that company A's strategy is to sell into niche markets. If they produce DVD's for 10 niches then, in theory, they'll do better than producing DVD's for 5 niches.
I wouldn't call it cannibalizing but you're right. Using the same methods as the next guy is no way to get ahead. The problem is that selling the investor on an established method of making porn is so much easier. In other words, director Dick can say 'Look, it sold well for company X, we can make money doing that, too.' If the investor really has no interest in porn other than as a money-making vehicle, then that's a lot safer bet than backing director Dan who hasn't sold anything but has some great footage he'd love for you to look at.
Hm, I think I failed to bring across my thoughts. Damn, I wish I'd worked harder in the English lessons back at school.
Assuming a store has 100 different DVDs. Assuming it has all new releases of company A. If company A puts out 50 new releases each month, every second sold DVD is from company A if the customer picks randomly, instead of only every fourth DVD if company A puts out 25 new releases.

I didn't mean that. Of course it makes sense for company C to produce the same stuff as company A and company B if the stuff sells. I mean that all companies A,B, C put out more of the same stuff than the customer can buy.
Company A puts out 50 rough Gonzo DVDs each month. But no customer buys them all. Every fan of this company buys 3,4 maybe 10 DVDs. So when the company put out less DVDs, each of the company's releases had increased sales and the overall number of sales would be the same.

I think juha meant that with many movies from one and the same company they start to compete against each other and steal each other's market share, therefore I would call it cannibalizing. It's like a company that produces butter and then decides to expand into the margarine market. Many customers you win for margarine will be at the expense of your butter business because these products are exchangeable, and if you got one you don't need the other anymore. But then that's probably what you already thought of when you mentioned carbon copies. Still what I think juha meant is called cannibalizing, at least in German-speaking countries.
Edit: Now that I finally know something helpful juha neeched me. It's not fair.

Got it, thanks. I missed it the first time because I'd already covered that scenario when I mentioned carbon-copies, which are, indeed, copies of the same material. I don't see many, if any companies doing that, though.
I've dated several guys who bought around 20 movies/month. Just regular guys out in the world. The one thing I noticed... they didn't care at all about "high production values." One guy liked anal and it was a company that sold him that anal more cheaply than the others and so that was his preferred company. I would like to know... of those on here who say they buy a larger amount like this... what sort of porns do you buy? I for one would love for the companies to spend more time and attention on quality not quantity. This is a huge battle for me. With regards to the number out the door per month. 20/titles per company a month is really overkill. I think the cannibalism comes from the company eating itself. There are only so many buyers out there. They can only afford to buy so much per month. At a certain point a company starts to compete with itself in putting out too much product. Also, I noticed the companies named here in paying attention to the higher quality were more feature oriented companies. I would have to bring to light companies like Evil Angel or Red Light or 3rd Degree, just to name a few, that really care about their product from everything I've seen and heard. It may be gonzo, but they're delivering great quality. I do think at the end of the day quality over quantity. That's what I would want. But, these companies that have the widget makers churning out the crap for cheap are certainly still in business. My boyfriends were buying them.
I agree with your central idea : that companies should focus more on quality , and less on quantity (at least from my perspective!) . But Viv Thomas is probably the worst example of that as they produce very few new releases each month and generally put a deal of effort into them . The ones on Joey's list go back over a year , and they probably put out 5 or 6 new titles a month , if that .
Is the porn rental market still big in the US, or have most video stores stopped carrying adult titles (like in France ?) I mean it makes sense that people can afford to rent all new RLD releases for one month, but not buy them all. Maybe we're reasoning too much in terms of purchase. Most people don't buy porn movies.

Can't speak for most, but in my area Vivid and other lame-ass shit stocks the shelves.
I get my stuff on-line. No VOD - ocassionally the server needs rebuilt. I like the liners.

You're welcome. By the way I'm quite sure the term exists in English, too, and if not it's time they adopt it.
You must be kidding but I'm afraid you're not... these guys were with you and went for cheap porn? Sure they were regular guys? They didn't really watch these 20 movies per month completely, did they? Well, I bought a lot of crap, too, before I got to know this wonderful site. Didn't know about quality porn, I thought porn is cheap by definition. Well, that's over now. I can only buy about 5 or 6 movies twice a year so it has to be really great stuff. I found out Elegant Angel caters best to my liking, especially since Tiana is with them and Flower isn't bound to Seymore Butts anymore. And hey, it would be great if you appeared in a squirting movie by Elegant Angel, too. I heard you're blessed with that wonderful talent, too, though I have yet to see you in a scene. I would like to...
You have a point here. I tend to forget that many people just rent the movies. It makes sense that they can watch more movies for the same money and maybe wouldn't want their favourite company to produce less. However, for those who prefer to own the movies it's more important to get quality stuff they will want to watch more than once. As for me I wouldn't buy a movie for one single scene or out of curiosity. I have enough time between two orders to make sure I find a movie I really want, for every single scene in it. Such movies may be rare, but they're out there. And more often than not it's the SIES movies that do it for me.
The world turns round and round and no one does anything against it.
I don't buy porn titles cold. I buy porn that I've previously rented. I rent porn that either has a performer I'm interested in or has an image on the box cover that piques my interest. If I like what I see then it goes into my 'buy' queue. However, the main reason I buy a good amount of porn is because I'm getting older titles as well. For instance, I just got a couple of 'new' old Rosebud titles featuring Vanessa Chase. I wouldn't buy all that much new porn.
FWIW, the clerks I talk to tell me that comps still outsell the shiny new boxcovers.

Actually Viv Thomas don't put out that many releases per month, I guess I'm running behind because 1) I buy DVDs from other studios as well and 2) Viv Thomas DVDs are a bit expensive.
