Hell, I think everyone's right. I give props to my man John Stagliano/Buttman because he was shooting and focusing on big asses all over the world in the early '90s. He was the leader in the big ass movement. He also was the first I remember to shoot on location overseas. His exploration of the Brazilian ass for the U.S. market was way ahead of its time. I still remember his early ass shots of Misty McCaine (Brit), Angela Summers and Heather Torrance.
Let me insert the name of Rachel Ashley from the '80s right here. Big ass, big breasts, beautiful face. Just sayin'.
Now I also think U.S. culture outside porn changed as well. All of sudden, it seemed women of color were thankfully getting more and more exposure (no pun intended). I don't know when it precisely happened, but curvy Latin and Black women started to get notice in popular culture. The mainstream (white culture) discovered the beauty of women like J.Lo, Vivica Fox, Gabrielle Union, Sophia Vergara and so on. Yep, you can say Sir Mix-a-Lot deserves credit. How bout some credit to the Fly Girls from In Living Color?
Before the 90s, it seemed mainstream sex appeal was defined by thin girls with big breasts and so followed early porn. Even black women in pop culture seemed to follow that unfair standard. Jayne Kennedy was an incredibly gorgeous, but skinny black woman. From what I remember, most of the early Black porn stars with the exclusion of the awsome Ebony Ayes were relatively thin. Desiree West, Angel Kelly, Sahara and then later Heather Hunter. Even Jeannie Pepper was thin when she started. Now that I think about it, Black and Latin women were very underrepresented in early porn.

The last sentence of the OP indicates what is being asked by the OP. Which pornstar started the big but craze. As long as black women have been in porn, there have black porn stars with big butts, some of which achieved some degree of success. The first major white pornstar to be recgonized as having a big butt was Nina Hartley, but the industry at large did not care, and Nina Hartley had to slim way down to satisfy the industry at large.

The first major pornstar to actually be marketed for her big butt was Janet Jacme. The industry still, at large did not care, and Janet Jacme, though never overweight, slimmed down, eventually to an underweight status, to go on her way to compile over 200 scenes in her career.

I would agree Nina Hartley was the first (white) pornstar known for having a spectacular ass and had the best looking ass for sure.
However, I would argue that Tanya Foxxx was actually more responsible for starting the big butt movement. Nina had a great body period but Tanya was specifically singled out during the 1980s for her ass and it was prominently marketed and featured in several BDSM movies and the first major wave of hardcore anal movies. She led the pack of new girls doing very hardcore anal and DP themed movies. FYI that pack included other stars with nice butts like Kelli Richards, Erica Boyer, and Buffy Davis.
In fact I found this Hustler article proclaiming the same thing about Tanya Foxxx:

Here are some pics of her which actually don't do her ass justice. I remember it being much bigger.

So why did the 1980s big butt movement die?
I guess I'd blame Vivid and the contract girl craze. Vivid started making a lot of money using girl next door types and more slender strippers turned pornstars. The big butt movement didn't make a comeback again until Stagliano started the Buttman series. But I don't even think Stagliano used girls with asses as big as say Kelly Divine, Naomi, Flower Tucci, and other big booty white girls. On the other hand, he did feature some girls in the same league as them like Krysti Lynn, Talia James, Alexandra Quinn, and some brazilian girls.

That basically sums it up. When more white women began to have rounder and more shapely asses, that's when it truly became "mainstream" to white men though. For blacks n latinos it was always popular. To a lot of white guys a big, round ass is something that they've started to take notice of only in the past 20-25 years. Sort of like hip hop music, it's been around since the 70's but it crossed over to the white audience in like late 80's -very. Early 90's. Some people even in 2000 thought of it as a fad but it was around for decades already.

Wow! Now matter how many pics of Tanya Foxxx you post, they will all prove my point that her ass is flat, wide and not that deep. It does not stick out. In the name of "white's only", most of the so-called big white asses are wide, flat and sagging on the tops of the legs of out of shape white women. So, thanks for proving yourself wrong with your pics.

Also, the article you posted includes the phrase "..way back in 1986..". It's just one dude's contemporary bullshit white-washing the past in order promote the present-day white girl IR and big-booty genres.

BTW, every pic of Nina Hartley exhibits a great ass and a big ass. Even when Nina was so small that she lacked flesh in her face and her rib cage was showing, she still had a great, big, firm, and shapely ass.

What's interesting is that there is now a similar mental illness afficting ass lovers that previously only afflicted tit lovers. Part of this affliction is the perception that 'great' means the same as 'large'. In the 80s, there was no big butt genre, nor was Tanya Foxxx, nor Nina Hartley and any of the several other white porn stars with asses as big or bigger that Tanya's, specifcally marketed for the SIZE of their ass. You need to stop making shit up. If what you say is true, then you can easily find a box cover in which Tanya is specifically marketed for the SIZE of her ass. In fact, of the 250 titles listed for Tanya Foxx by iafd.com. plenty refer to anal sex, but only one refers to the ass itself. "Young Cheeks", a non-sex movie in which the entire cast has nothing to do with having a big ass. Tanya Foxx was known for being a super skank of her time, one of the early performers known for IR, anal sex, facials and the real DP. In the 80s, stars were widely known for their ass only if they were widely known for anal sex. Little Ginger Lynn was widely known for her ass.

^ As I've pointed out from time to time...there are "Big butts", "Bubble butts" and "Big bubble butts". To me having a big butt can be okay but it's not that impressive to me. "Big butts" are big but that doesn't mean much if the don't have a pleasing roundness and shape to them. "big butts" are a dime a dozen and aren't anything special. "Bubble butts" are special because fewer girls have them because the weight has to distributed in the right way for it to look good. "Bubble butts" have that nice roundness to them and the stick out from the rest of the body in a nice way. Nina Hartley, Kristina Rose, and Sasha Grey have/had bubble butts on a thin frame and looked awsome. "Big bubble butts" are the same as "Bubble butts" but are bigger and the girl is ususally carrying a bit more weight. Kelly Divine, Ava Rose, Monica Santhiago all are the proud owners of big bubble butts.
That's how I break butts down. "Roundness" and the way it sticks out are key.

I don't buy that theory. Liking women with big asses is not an exclusively "black" thing; it's a male thing. If some white men in the past were scared to admit they liked girls with big asses, then they were basically just being fucking pussies.

I agree with Housemaster. However, I would say for this white guy it was a maturity thing. As a teenager, I was into slim girls and I also focused on breasts. We were being bombarded with images of Charlie's Angels, Suzanne Somers, Lynda Carter and so on. I did appreciate a nice curvy ass though, but still mostly on slim girls. I am sure some of these teenage girls I knew filled out nicely.
Later as I crossed paths with curvy Latin and Black girls in the U.S. and pop culture evolved, my appreciation for a woman's posterior grew.
I have to also agree with the comment on Tanya Foxx. Her ass is just flat and nothing special. Admittedly she was a pretty woman, but her ass is a dime a dozen. As the article itself noted, she was not a big star. It certainly did not launch a butt craze in porn. I am not trying to pat myself on the back, but in the day I could pull an ass like that without a lot of difficulty. Most cougars I know have asses nicer than Tanya Foxx.
No matter how many of us worship a nice ass, we will all have friends who only want skinny blonde girls.

I'm sure there are white guys who have always liked big butts and there of course have always been white women with big butts but the main point here is that big butts on white women wasn't always popular and in fact was considered a bad thing with most white people until the last decade or so. Remember the classic line..."Does this dress make my butt look big?". The very reason that line came about was because white women (and some black) thought a big butt was unflattering. And most people happily went right along with that line of thinking until pop culture told them big butts were the cool thing to have. Yeah, J-Lo gets praise for her booty now but if you remember when she first became popular she got lots of butt backlash and people were commenting it was too big and others just didn't know what to make of it. Slowly, over time as more photographers started trying to get more butt shots of her because it made news that people starting to come around and apprieciate her butt and other celebs butts and women in general felt more comfortable with their backsides. These days seeing shots of celebs backside is very common but it wasn't always like that. Back then it was all about big breasts.

I agree, two reasons for the popularity of the big butt preference among white men. The newly evolved big butt growth among white women and the J-Lo phenom. As an African-american, I grew up in an 95%+ white community. Even after I left home at 17, a white guy who prefered a bigger rounder ass to a smaller, unimposing ass, was very rare. But, I had always believed that these tastes were unnatural rationalizations based upon the rarity of great prominent asses among white women. J-Lo allowed mass media and main stream entertainment to realize the true tastes already trending among their top demographic group.

I also think there are more bubble butt white women today than there were before because of race mixing. I don't remember seeing as many bubble butt white women when I was younger compared with today. Part of it is that Americans are carrying more weight than they did years ago but that's not really it. I'm seeing more "round" butts on white women than ever before. People are naming pornstars from the past in this thread who had big/bubble butts but really those body types weren't nearly as common as what we're seeing today. If porn had tried to start the big butt craze in the 70/80s they wouldn't have had that many women to work with as compared to today.

Race mixing? Come on? You are seeing more bubble butt white today
in porn because there are simply much more women doing porn today versus
the 90s and 80s. Back then you had maybe a 50 performers in the biz at any
time. During the 80s there were like five black female performers!!!! Compare
that to today.
You just simply have a LOT more women and varieties of women doing porn today.
Some of these thicker white women have come from european countries, some
are MILFs (which was not popular in old days), lot of them are former strippers who nowadays are much more willing to do porn now. Add to that
the newer generation of companies much more open to diverse looks to
find a niche to sell to in a crowded market. For example, now you have
companies cranking out tons of movies featuring BBWs and SSBBWs like
Sensational Video.
Like I said above big butt white women have ALWAYS been around but back in
the 80s and 90s the few companies they had were more focused on petite girls
or Playboy type women (see Vivid and Wicked).

I have to agree with Zambi. The first white girl in porn that I really took notice of because of her ass wasn't Nina Hartley, but Tanya Foxx. I too remember her ass being much bigger and rounder than in those pics. Maybe constructed memory, but again like Zambi said, Tanya rode the Big Ass wave better than Nina did.
If I had to point to one woman, I'd say Tanya. If two, Tanya and Nina.

Part of it is a wider variety of women doing porn and that's why I said they'd have a harder time dong as many big butt movies back then. More importantly, there simply wasn't as many bubble butt white women back then as they there seems to be today. If you take 10 random whitewomen from any year in the 70/80 and stack them against 10 random white women from the 2000s decade I think the 00's group would have a much better butts overall. I'm talking about women in general as well as women in porn.
Different races have different body types and carry their weight differently. From what I see black women carry more fat in certain areas than white women and Asian women have a certain body type and Latinas have a certain body type. Not to say in every race all those women have the same type of body but from what I see there are differences. For example, I don't think most Asian women have the type of butts Brazillian women have. Black women don't have the same types of butts in general that most white women have. I may be totally wrong but I'm seeing more and more white women with bubble butts compared to what I was seeing a couple of decades ago. I notice that even in movies. I'm talking bubble butts moreso than just big butts.
I think part of the reason for this is because of Americans carrying more weight in general than they did years ago and different races/ethnicities mixing. So now more "white" women have bubble butts than before. But like I said I could be off on that theory.

I thought I would give this discussion some historical context. When I was a teenager, I remember the Jan. 1978 Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition coming to the house. There were several things very unique about this edition. First, it had a beautiful, curvy Brazilian woman named Maria João on the cover. She was not thin or busty. The edition was shot in Bahia, Brazil. There was another curvy Brazilian woman with her ass featured in prominence and artistically (seriously). I remember getting a very different arousal by these pictures displaying the female posterior. These were very different poses with models with a different shape then your standard issue slim Sports llustrated model. The rest of the magazine had the typical SI swimsuit models. Interestingly, Maria João is Jordana Brewster's mother. Jordana Brewster's father is an American and although quite pretty, she is very slim.

I always love this ass shot. Good enough eat!

Considered a classic SI photo.

The other and most memorable thing about the Jan. 1978 issue was a photo of pretty Cheryl Tiegs in a fishnet swimsuit which basically exposed her lovely breasts. This caused many parents to cancel their son's subscriptions. This was a total contrast to the ass featured photos above. Cheryl Tiegs was one of the Supermodels of the 70s and totally hot. Given that, I could not find one photo of her ass displayed prominently. I am fairly certain it was not round and curvy.

Continuing with the culture, I would have to say Playboy and Penthouse models have typically been slender and busty. This was certainly very true in the 70s and 80s. Looking back, by the early 80s Playboy had a few Black Playmates. These women were hot, but slender. Playboy seemed to very tepid with the ass shot during most of the 70s and the ass photos became more assertive over time. Penthouse was always more aggressive with its photography particularly in the 70s and early 80s. Penthouse models varied more in shape and look than Playboy, but I think slender still was the norm.
