As far as waiting for the capacity to increase, unless things have changed, the Tivo's have standard PC hard drives in them. Swapping the hard drive for a bigger one used to be a pretty simple task.

Either way, my time-shifting needs are short. If I don't watch something that I've recorded within a day or 2, it's never getting watched.

What's real interesting is that Voom (a HD satellite company that I predict is destined for failure) has announced a networkable HD PVR. This will allow people to record on single PVR and play back on any TV in the house. There is a secondary "receiver" that has to be located at the other TV's. But it's much cheaper than another PVR would cost.

You also find that there are things that you would never have considered watching in SD that you end up loving in HD. The first show that comes to mind is "Smart Travels with Rudy Maxa" on PBS. This is a show where the host gives tips about traveling through different cities in Europe. Among other things, they show museums, architecture, public artwork, etc... This type of stuff is hard to appreicate in SD. But in HD, there's a definite "wow" factor.

Also, it is likely that you will buy another HDTV in the foreseeable future. When you do, you will already have the STB.

Everything that I just wrote is exactly what I did when I upgraded my first STB prior to buying my second HDTV. When I get the HD Tivo, I will move my newer HD STB from my den to my bedroom (where there is an HDTV), my older HD STB from my bedroom to the guest room (where there is a 27" SDTV and put the new receiver in the den.

Currently DirecTV is giving HD Receivers and 3LNB dishes to customers of 2 or more years with an average of $45 or more bills for $99 ($399 + shipping & tax, with a $350 programming credit). You need to speak to the customer retention department. You can read a 40+ page thread on this here.

IMO, it's likely that they will do something similar with the HD Tivo's (probably as soon as cable companies offer their own HD PVR's). I'm going to wait a little while to see what will shake out on HD Tivo's. A couple of months would be worth a $400 or so savings.

DirecTV isn't running any promotions on the HD Tivo yet, but when I called the Customer Retention department yesterday, prior to ordering, to ask if they had anything to help offset the $999 price tag of one of these units, they gave me a $150 programming credit. Technically, it wasn't for the HD Tivo, they said that it was "in appreciation for me being a good customer since 1996". If you're going to buy one of these boxes, it probably makes sense to give the customer retention department a call. You can go through the standard customer service number or you can call customer retention directly at Call (800) 600-8977.

I pre-ordered an HD Tivo in February from these cocksuckers with the understanding that I would be one of the first people to receive one before retail outlets like Circuit City and Best Buy would get them in stock. I'm still waiting for the fucking thing to be delivered and there are a couple of stores in my area who have received them and sold out already.

Fuckin' assholes!! I just got off the phone with VE and they said that mine would be delivered by the first or second week of June. They said DirecTv's allocation of these units is very limited for its initial release.

Right now I don't give a fuck who-if anyone-is at fault for the delayed shipment. It just fuckin' burns my ass that people in my area already have this fucking thing because they probably walked into the electronices store at the right time, saw them in stock, and snatched them up quickly and I'm still waiting.

If you order one from somewhere else, and it is delivered before Value Electronics sends it to you, they will refund your deposit to you.

I received mine yesterday from Circuitcity.com. I ordered it last Friday, but didn't pay for priority shipping because, up til that point, CC had been shipping them from Pennsylvania. Typical for me, I got one from the first batch shipping out of California.

CC keeps adding new inventory to their site as they get them (daily). It looks like the are selling out in a matter of minutes. If you go over the the Tivo Community forum, where I assume you found the Value Electronics deal in the first place, you will find some scripts that people have written to watch the page on the CC website watching for a change in inventory status. It then notifies them that it's available. You can find some of these scripts in the Circuit City DirecTV HD10-250 thread in the HD Tivo forum.

I have normal TiVo but rarely use it because I don't really have the time to watch the shows that would get recorded.

And of course, like an idiot, I forgot to TiVo the Friends finale, one of the things I would have wanted to TiVo. And since I hadn't been recording the other episodes in the past, it didn't do an automatic record for me.

Anyway, as far as the HD TiVo's - like I said I'll wait. Perhaps when NFL starts in the fall, John will want to upgrade so that he can TiVo the HD games. Other than that, we really don't watch any HD programming right now that needs to be seen in HD. I can deal with Leno in SD.

Although I've been watching some HBO movies on their HD channel lately. Pretty cool.

On second thought, it's my fault . It's my fault for believing the line of bullshit I was fed from DirecTv, from VE, from whoever. I'm just so anxious to have HD recording capabilty because I work afternoons and cannot see any primetime HD programming.

Anyway,
I just got back from a local electronics store that can have one "shipped in from Ohio" by the end of this week or sooner (I live in southeast Michigan). I put a down payment on the unit and I will cancel my order from VE after it is in my hands.

On a sidenote,
I asked this question in the Star Crossed section and had no replies. Perhaps someone here that subscribes to the Spice Channel can answer my question:

Cindy Crawford was on the Howard Stern show yesterday and he mentioned that she appears on Spice TV every week but I forgot the name of the show. Can anyone tell me which show she is on? Is this show broadcasted in high definition on Spice HD?

Sorry but I don't want to start another thread on this topic and I would consider subscribing to the Spice package for this show since I'm a big fan of Cindy.

I've been having problems with WNBC-DT the last couple of days. I'm getting a lot of pixelization. I thought that it was a problem with the receiver. However, last night when i went to check the picture in my bedroom with the Hughes HTL-HD, there was no picture at all and I was getting the "no-signal" message. So I guess that it's a case of the tuner actually being better than what I've had, not worse.

Overall, I love it. I've never had a Tivo before. So part of loving it is just the joy of Tivo, not the fact that it's HD. I'm already at the point of questioning how I ever lived without one of these and considering buying a second one for the bedroom. Hopefully, I can hold out long enough for them to drop in price before I do that. But patience is not my long suit (especially when there's a lot of money in the bank).
