If Jenna and Ron were to retire, which porn stars would replace them as the mainstream faces of porn?

I hope it would be Lex and Bella.

yeah that would be cool..

I'm not sure if Bella is a bit too extreme to be accepted, but on the other hand she's so big right now and she will probably become even bigger.

I wonder, does the porn industry really need a face for the mainstream? Will it change their view how they see porn?

I think porn is too fragmented to really produce "stars" in the same way that Jeremy and Jenna have become. Both Js rose to their current prominence when VHS was still happening and the Internet was much less of an option than it is now. They also were very much a part of the mainstreaming of porno, so they got a huge boost from that crossover momentum.

I think you will always have "porno spokesmodels" like Tera, who successfully brand themselves, but what does Tera really do?

Right now, there are two basic models for the superstar: the Stormy Daniels/Nikki Benz model and the Belladonna model. And my sense is that the real winners are going to be the gals like Bella (or Dana DeArmond, or Joanna Angel ...) who have a kick-ass Internet presence and aren't really so reliant on the middle-aged businessman-type raincoater. Bceause the REAL market for porn is, basically, teenagers surfing the Internet ... The whole DVD thing is gonna be history w/in 5 years. And the whole idea of a porn "star" is going to be ephemeral at best.

I agree with you about the fragmentation of porn making it highly unlikely we will ever see the Jenna, Ginger, John Holmes, megastar but DVDs will not go away. There are people out there who want more from their porn than see that ass, shake that ass, slap that ass, gape that ass, fuck that ass, cum in that ass gonzo. The big budget features such as Pirates and TNDIMJ will not be getting downloaded from the internet.

Sure?
Teenagers surfing the internet aren't willing to pay.
They prefer illegal downloads.

But the porn biz can always rely on middle-aged businessman-type raincoaters who want to buy quality porn on optical media.

Stormy and Tommy Gunn.

It seems these two have the most irons in the fire when it comes to having a mainstream audience. I also don't see either of them leaving the business for quite some time.

I agree with whomever said no one. Porn is way too common now. Girls don't even have to come to LA to make six figures a year doing porn, they can have a single girl site like Midwest Melissa, Raven Riley, Naughty Allie, or even a simple girl with a webcam. Anyone can be a porn star, they no longer have to be annointed by a 'system'.

I believe there are 7 girls that can maybe be the next Jenna if marketed in right way.

Vivid
Stefani Morgan

ClubJenna
Chanel St. James
Sophia Rossi

Wicked
Stormy Daniels
Kristen Price

Digital Playground
Jesse Jane

I think to be the next Jenna a girl cannot have a to hardcore gonzo past. Well it may very well endear her to the fans on this board but to mainstream it kills her image.

As far as the next Ron I think hes irreplacable hes the everyday guy and in todays porn that just doesnt work. He always gave the average guy the feeling if Ron was out here banging these hot chicks then they could. So no I dont think you will ever have say a Ron.

Lots of thought-provoking answers! Thank you for responding.

I agree that they both wouldn't be "replaced", per se, because they both have unique aspects to their careers that cannot be copied. Ron has been working since the 70s, and there aren't many guys like that left. And Jenna rode the internet tidal wave and stayed on her board all the way to the shore.

But it's not just the timing. Those two, and their management, are *very* hard-working. They bust their asses to get any kind mainstream exposure. They both love porn; they want to promote the industry as much as they promote themselves. That love of the industry is key: they got mainstream status, and instead of leaving the industry (like Traci) they straddled both.

swede: I don't know about "too extreme" being a reason Bella couldn't be the next Jenna. To many non-porn people, just being a pornstar is extreme, and any levels of craziness within being a pornstar is all a blur.

Ramsey: Yes, we absolutely need mainstream representatives for porn. Exposure outside of porn media increases our industry. Increases our sales. Even negative attention can increase our sales. The thing I love about Jenna and Ron is that they are positive exposure that balances out the negative shit. You know, I signed up for those Google notifiers that send you the latest news articles on a keyword. I chose "porn" as a keyword, and the articles are almost all "child porn" or "porn store prosecuted". I'd much rather my news alerts were filled with gossip about "Jennastin" or "Davenna".

I think that having our faces out there *can* change how the gen pub sees porn, if only by slowly making exposure to it a part of their everyday lives. The more people are exposed to it, the more people will try it, and discover they like it. The more people like it, the less restricted our industry will be.

Think about it man: Cigarettes killed a million times more people than porn did last year. But there's no cops tearing up the offices of Brown&Williamson. Why? Cuz tobacco is part of the mainstream.

skronk: Respectfully, brother, I don't agree with the fragmented theory. Think about this, man: You could say the same thing about mainstream media. We have more choices than just cable TV and Carmike cinemas now. We can watch non-porn entertainment on the net, too. But we still have celebrities, and levels of celebrity-dom. It's partially about money and the exposure money buys. A couple of college kids can make a funny video on YouTube, but it won't get as much attention as a 100 million dollar movie with worldwide distribution starring Johnny Depp.

People in general use entertainment as a pastime. Most are not going to do all the work that we porn hobbyists do to find what pleases us. The mass will trust their Entertainment Tonight, their local paper and their CNN.com to tell them what they should try. These media outlets are "star-makers".

I don't think the net makes it harder, I think it makes it *easier*. I can see Bella on PrimeTime Live, and if I want to know more about her, I can take 5 steps to my computer and find out more. Once I'm at her website, I'm hooked! As opposed to trying to remember what her name was 3 weeks later when I'm in the pornshop.

Regarding the breakdown of the porn market. I think the "raincoater" you speak of is more important than you think. I'm not exactly sure what you mean when you describe that persona. But I think you may mean what I call "the occasional buyer". He is where most of a retailer's money comes from. For most retailers, the split can be generalized this way:

10% - 80% - 10%
Pornhound - Occasional Buyer - Rare buyer

The definitions of each vary from retailer to retailer, of course. But the "occasional buyer" is the person who gets porn regularly, but only gets it once every 1-2 months, and doesn't always get it from the same place.

Why am I bringing this up in relation to skronker? Because *everyone* is dependent on that customer. If that is who skronk speaks of by "middle-aged raincoater". Because that customer actually has his own money. Teens don't have their own money. And inbedwithfaith.com makes its money from people with money.

Assuredly, teens are a powerful consumer influence, which is why businesses market to them. But no good parent is going to get a 13-year-old a subscription to samantha38g.com because he begged and pleaded and promised to clean his room. Porn, in fact, actively markets *against* teens because that's the law.

To splice your post even further (sorry brother!), I think that there will always be "porn stars": performers who have attained a fan base and a certain level of popularity. But I wasn't addressing the idea of "porn star" in this thread, but the idea of the "mega porn star" or the "porn superstar": the porn star who has broken through to celebrity in the non-porn world.

Even still, I will take on your idea of the internet making pornstardom disappear. I think there will always be pornstars, but there will be more fans of porn. The internet has expanded porn's popularity and access to porn. More performers attracting more fans is good for porn. Even still, there are "star-makers". AVN is a star-maker. An AVN award is a star-maker. Hustler mag is a star-maker. Influential publications and awards are influential becase they reach a lot of people. Sure, there are a million pornsites, but *everyone* in the industry reads AVN. If you make the cover of that, you will get a lot of extra attention. You will fit the definition of "star" - a light (whether big or small) that everyone can see.

I define "porn star" as someone who is well-known for engaging in sexual activities on video. "Well-known" doesn't have to mean a million people know your name or face. 10,000 will do. The number is arbitrary. If people you've never met know you for making sex tapes, then you're a porn star.

DVD's aint goin' nowhere, either. Because computers still cost too much to reach the penetration that TV's, VCR's and DVD players have.

Had enough, skronk?

Thing is, it will be the mainstream media who choose their "go-to" porn "icons."

Not the industry.
Not us.
And, not by porn credentials/merit.

As far as the female "icon" goes, she will have to be marketable during sleazy network "sweeps weeks" when porn "coverage" will be shown.

How about Nina Hartley?
I know she's already older than Jenna, but who could be better?

I think Jenna's had such a unique impact on the mainstream it will be hard to "replace" her. She's really done something no one did before her, at least to the successful degree she did and now that the path's been set you can't really replace her. Can another girl reach those heights, sure, but it won't be the same impact as Jenna had when she was blazing the trail. To me it's kinda like the Beatles, they came after such greats as Chuck Berry, Little Richard, etc. who all brought something to the table and in the adult biz you had Ginger Lynn, Marilyn Chambers and then Jenna who took what they and others did and just brought everything up a notch like the Beatles did. That was a hard analysis to do but that's how I see it.

It's not really who as much as it is to do with timing and technology. It is like the Beatles, in a way: They hit mass culture at a time when everything was changing, and they helped shape it with the aid of expanding technologies. Jenna enjoyed a similar role, partly by being the acceptable face of something mass culture pretends is unacceptable. She's the all-American fantasy girl. Ron Jeremy, well, he's a Borscht Belt comic with a 10-inch schwanz, representative of Jewish striving to assimilate – how that factors into this whole equation, I have no clue. But, primarily, he's funny and therefore harmless . I would add that I think Buttman's popularity owes a lot of the disarming nature of his persona – which is why he was such a great team with Rocco. Buttman is the wobbly internal voice of most guys in the face of an asstoundingly hot woman; Rocco is the sexually potent alter ego.

The big problem with there being "another Jenna" is that porn so emphasizes the disposability and endless interchangeable nature of its female performers that it's almost impossible for any single girl to capture and sustain a significant "market share" of long-term fans. It's more like 256 cable channels vying for a percentage of a limited viewership. You've got to be able to last at least 5 years, and then still be in-shape and hungry enough to keep people wanting to watch you, while stepping up the game by owning your own content, whatever form it takes. That's a very tall order.

Belladonna is pulling it off, which is why I would vote for her. But because her vibe is on the "underground" side, I think we're gonna have to see how many of her younger fans stick with her. If so, she could have a really long and lucrative career.

Extending the Beatles/Jenna analogy I guess this would make Belladonna the Grateful Dead of porn?

I think the history of the adult film industry repeats the history of mainstream film but at an accelerated tempo.
In the 30s the Hollywood studio system was in full bloom. It produced icons like Jean Harlow, Marlene Dietrich, Humphrey Bogart and Cary Grant.
After WWII the decline of the studio system began and it totally fell apart in the early 60s.
The biggest and last star of the studio system was Marilyn Monroe.

Its similar in porn. In the second half of the 80s the studio system was established. Today we watch it falling apart.

Both times a new entertainment technology played an important role (advent of TV, advent of the internet).

There will never be an icon in porn like Jenna just as there will never be an icon in mainstream film like Marilyn.

But that's not necessarily a bad thing for today's performers. Though they don't have the chance to reach iconic status they have other opportunities. If they are smart they can use their success to get more creative freedom. For example Stormy. I'm sure she's totally aware she will never be a second Jenna but she doesn't bemoan the loss of the studio system. She convinced Wicked to give her the chance to write and direct movies - unthinkable back in 1994. Today is a great time for creative and determined girls.

Todays porn market and gonzo popularity make it hard for a girl to rise to Jenna status. Alot of girls get into porn in within the first 3 or 4 months in the biz they can never acheive her level. Jenna has always been accepted in mainstream for all the reasons porn fans get mad at her about. She wouldnt do the hardcore scenes that the average guy who has a couple porn flicks at home would be too embarassed to buy. Another thing I think she did was that she limited the number of movies she did. I dont think shes done a 100 scenes to date thats over 10 years of performing. Most girl now come in and within a year have a 100 scenes under their belt and done a scene in every niche out there. Alot of the girls entering porn are to young to really dont have an idea of what they are getting themselves into. They see girls like Jenna and think look she made it big I can too. So they get hooked up with some small adult modeling agency who flys her out to LA for 10 days to do 12 scenes. Ten days later shes on her way back to where ever USA and she has already lost her shot at reaching what Jenna has reached in porn.

I think Stormy could and has got a real shot at it. Bella I dont think she would ever get the opportunitys Stormy will get. I think Bella is every bit the performer Stormy is if not better but she has that rough edge that wont crossover. Taryn Thomas another great performer and will always have a large fan base but being named the dirtiest girl in porn kinda rules her out

I think Savanna is more interested in selling her wines and creating a life post porn. She did not seem happy at AVN in January. Her husband was with her and they had split up for a while about two years ago.

When I talked to her at AVN in jan. she seemed excited to be starting her own company. She told me that she was unhappy with the movies over the past year just from both a quality standpoint and she wasn't allowed to do want she wanted to do. Now with her own company and with the freedom to finally make the harder stuff she's always wanted I think this will be very good times for her. Yes, she's is nearing the end of her career and if she'd started sooner she would have been perfect to step into Jennas shoes but if Jennas prescence keeps slowly diminishing I see Savanna as the one to pick up the mantel for the next couple years.
As for her working on her wines and her post porn career I would never begrudge her that. Good that she has a plan and a solid head on her shoulders.

whoever said Nina Hartley, I second that.

whoever said that mainstream chooses and the porn industry doesn't, I agree as well. To a certain extent. Ron and Jenna do hustle to get the college lectures and the mainstream gigs. Those gigs don't just fall in their laps. Plus they do the work it takes to sound both educated and entertaining in front of a mainstream audience.

I happen to love Savanna Samson but she is 38(granted she doesn't look anything close to it.). Jenna has been a legend for a decade now and is still only 32. Now if Savanna had started out the same time Jenna did who knows how thing would have turned out.

I think its highly unlikely, that anyone will replace Jenna and Ron but for a different reason. The 'Howard Stern,' was the X-factor in raising the profile of not only JJ but many other starlets. As per Bustdowngal's original hypothesis, from the 90's until recently Stern's FM radio show provided that mainstream exposure and acceptance that sells XXX videos and dvd's. Besides JJ, Stern's show introduced me to Leanna Hart, Houston, Jasmine St. Claire and Tabathia Stevens to name just a few.

There are other pornstars out there right now who have significant mainstream profiles: Tera and Spyder, Savanna Samson (btw... and not by coincidence another Stern fav), Stormy to name the top contenders in my mind. But what they lack is a regular presence on the highest rated nationally syndicated radio show in the United States. The question is: "Who will replace Howard Stern?"

Great point Alexander! Stern is key!

I know he has his satellite network, but is he still as widely heard as in his heyday?

The Man Show coulda replaced Howard, but they're gone.

I wish that the talk shows were more open to porn stars. We know all those dudes jack to porn, so why not? A lot of porn stars are more widely known than some of the C-list comics and tv actors that dot the late night talkshow landscape.

I saw Seymore Butts on Conan. Conan may be our "in". He should have a "pornstar of the week" every week. Even making fun of pornstars and using them in sketches would be good exposure.

"Aside from Mary Carey, I can't remember a bigger mainstream adult story in the past five years,” said JAX."

Gee, guess he missed on that whole Paris Hilton thing.

That's a toughie with so many porn starlettes moving in and out of the business these days. With Jenna & Ron that's over 30 years of facetime in porn. I say enjoy the young faces and bods because they may not be there for long.

My personal taste is Cytherea/Hillary Scott/Tori Lane
The male face has to be Randy Spears for the fact he seems to be every g/b movie.
