At my old store (no longer there), we would buy new releases for from $15-$18 for single dvd's (around 10 titles each order). Plus shipping & COD fees. Older titles were a lot less. Once we bought them, they were ours, no returns unless for replacement of defective titles. Larger quantities could get better prices of course.

Then how come stores here in NYC sells DVD like RLD, PXP and etc at $18.00 a piece?
Because wholesale prices have been dropping for the last few years (especially on RLD & PXP titles). Also the stores in NYC sell a lot of copies. Therefore, many of them can buy directly from the studios and cut out the wholesaler or because they buy so much from the wholesaler, they get very good prices from them.
I never thought either RLD or PXP were worth getting as new releases. Those we got by the box of 50 at around 7-8 $ per title. Most of my new releases were Evil Angel.
The New York stores could also be a chain that moves enuff titles to self distribute or they just sel so many dvd's that they make money on sheer volume. Thats assuming they are selling "real" dvds.
There are some porn shops that I can never understand how they make money. They sell all their DVDs at the highest suggested MRP and will never mark them down no matter how old they become. I find it hard to believe that anyone would pay 40 bucks for a DVD that's 4 years old and in many cases is an old rental. Yet they never mark them down. I would think that after making money from renting it they'd still come out ahead if they sold it for 20 bucks or less. Or even if it's new they'd be better off selling it at cost or alittle higher. How can you make money if the stock never moves?

I've wondered about this myself. I chalk it up to people not understanding the business they are in. Of course, you can find that in all sorts of businesses, not just porn, but my Grand Theory of Porn holds that the adult industry attracts more of those people than most other industries.
Location, location, location. I have a local store that prices their DVD's at $49.99 and sells a lot of them. They are located on a major street and don't look remotely seedy looking inside or out. They get a lot of people, who don't know any better, who stop there and buy a disc to watch at home with the wife.
The owner knows that he could sell more discs if he lowered the price. But he can't sell that more many that he would make the same amount of profit that he currently makes. He's not looking to sell to knowledgeable customer. He's looking to sell to the convenience customer (kind of like 7-11 selling their items for a lot more than a supermarket does).
Yeah my friends will ask me if I ever buy any of my DVD's at any of the adult stores here in Phoenix. I always tell them no because the prices are way too high and you get the same DVD for 50% or more off the internet if you know where to look.
I'm usually surprised more stores aren't following the internet example but obviously they're not eating away at them like you'd think.

That tradeoff makes perfect sense, but it still doesn't explain the porn store with 4 year old crap product sitting on their shelves that they're trying to sell for full price, i.e. $40 or more. To me, that just shows they don't understand how to manage their inventory.
There was a store I used to rent from that I liked. He did a pretty good job of keeping up with new titles and his rental prices weren't bad. About 2 years ago they closed because according to the girls that worked there his profits dropped a bit and he blamed it on the net. But realistically, if he would've marked down his older movies and get people to see that store as more of a place to rent and buyfrom he'd done much better business. He basically had a back room filled with videoes and DVDs he couldn't sell because no one wanted to pay those kind of prices for previously viewed movies.
Blockbuster and Hollywood Video seem to get it and adjusted the way their stores sell DVDs to keep stock moving and make money.
That's true I guess. There's a store in the malls here called SUNCOAST VIDEO that sells mainstream DVD releases for about 30 bucks sometimes when pretty much anywhere else you go you can get the same movie for less than $20. At least with porn there aren't a whole lot of outlets selling the product but mainstream DVDs are practically everywhere. They will sometimes have titles that mainstream outlets might not carry like Anime DVDs but they are another store that I can't figure out how they stay in business.
